Don't feel ashamed or sorry for crying. It might seem silly, but this game is so important for so many fans for so many reasons. Many lost hope to see them remastered, yet here we are. So it does bring a nice feeling, and holding a tear is impossible.
About the modern controls, yeah I'm using them and enjoying them so much. I play on PC so using mouse and keyboard feels really comfortable. In contrast to what many people think, you can do EVERY single move with modern controls as well. They are just done in a different way so it does not mess with the free 360° movement. I wrote a guide about them on Steam and Reddit, so I'll leave how the moves are done here in case more people find them useful.
One thing first that I think leads to confusion is that there are 2 "action" buttons for modern controls. Aspyr split them in 2 and are used for different situations. The so called action button ( Defaults: PS=Triangle Xbox=Y Switch=X PC=E ) is used to interact with objects in the map (levers, doors, buttons, blocks etc.) and pickups (keys, medipacks, ammo, weapons). The proper grab button to hold on to ledges is the one called secondary button ( Defaults: PS=R2 Xbox=RT Switch=ZR PC= Left mouse button ). This is the button you will use the most while platforming. With that been said, I hope this guide proves useful to you.
Modern controls useful tips and commands:
(Remember that directions are camera relative in Modern Controls)
- Vault to grab ledges (same as tank controls):
Hold grab button (secondary/alternate) + forward.
- Back and side flipping:
Hold the draw weapons button, wait for animation, press and hold jump then immediately after press back, left or right
- Back stepping:
Hold the draw weapons button, wait for animation, tap backwards.
OR
Press Look key to toggle to look mode, hold back. While still holding back press look key to toggle it off. (Thanks Eli Parker and TR Reddit)
- Sidestepping:
Press the Look key to toggle to look mode. While in it hold walk button + left or right. Keep holding them and press look key to toggle it off (Thanks Eli Parker and TR Reddit)
- Hold ledges when falling:
Run towards the ledge and let Lara fall while holding the grab button (secondary/alternate). She will turn around and grab the ledge.
- Swan Dive (same as tank controls):
From Idle: Press and hold the jump button, immediately after press forward + walk button.
From Running: Keep holding forward, press jump + walk button.
- Fancy climb up (Handstand) (same as tank controls):
While holding to a ledge, hold walk button then press forward.
- Swimming:
Lara swims freely in all directions relative to the direction the camera is facing (also includes how far up or down you are looking), no need to hold the jump button. To swim to surface, look up as much you can and move forward until Lara breaths again. You can swim forward, backwards and sideways freely on the surface. To dive, hold the jump button. To grab a ledge low enough, hold forward + grab button.
- Moving backwards while crawling/crouching:
Hold the walk button while crouched and tap backwards.
- Grabbing a ledge from crawling position:
Use the backwards movement described above until you are positioned backwards towards a ledge, hold the walk + grab button, then hold backwards.
- Diving roll from sprinting:
While sprinting, keep holding forwards and press the roll button.
Useful Hotkeys: (Thanks to tms.hu and TR Reddit)
Light flare and throw flare is F on keyboard or Select (hold) + right bumper on controller.
There is also a quick weapon select 1 to 8 on keyboard or Select + A are the pistols, Select + B is shotgun, Select + X Desert eagle/Automatic Pistols, Select +Y Uzis (Xbox layout), I don't know the left bumper or the triggers. Harpoon gun is automatically equipped underwater.
You can use a Big medipack on keyboard by pressing 9 and a small medipack by pressing 0
This is also the same in tank controls.

"Lost Valley is Tomb Raider. There is no better way to say it" [AxMania] 😇. It's hard to believe that just adding a sky make the river rocks somewhat muddier and the water crystal could turn one of the most famous and beloved levels from great to perfection 🌴🌴🌴. Your reaction to the valley itself from the astonishment of the sun to the tears at the other side of the bridge was reaaly the most beatiful moment of the video.😊😊
I played the level a few times for the achievements and got eaten multiple times by a hungry T-Rex 🦖 but damn it how fun it was to fight it again and again. If I'm right this level has 3 main achievements:
- The one you said. Get the shotgun before fighting the T-Rex, easy peasy. I personally recomment going first to get the shotgun befor going to the valley as some of the raptors appear from behing the corner and they die from a single shell at close range. If you are going for the "No medipack full run" or "Full run in less than 5-6 hours" might be usefull to have an extra ace on the sleeve. It also helped me to get the following achievement.
- Kill all the raptors in Lost Valley and the 4 in Tomb of Qualopec without being wounded by them. The ones that are in the valley can be easily taken down with the guns by keeping an open distance and runing around them. The ones inside the cave and the Tomb of Qualopec are at much closer range and without space to maneauvre and here the shotgun is quite useful.
- Finish Lost Valley without hurting the T-Rex. Yeah, quite crazy but not as much as the one of the wolves in Vilcabamba. The T-Rex occasionally stops to roar so it's a perfect moment to run, get the gears and escape the valley before getting trampled.
It was such a stunning transformation 😭 It was so emotional to see 🥰
Haha I’d say it was fun getting chomped by the T-Rex in the new graphics 😍 Ah yes I can really see how having the shotgun is great for the raptor achievement! It’s so handy that it takes them down in one shot 😃 That sounds so scary but thrilling to keep the T-Rex alive 😍 It sounds like a fun challenge! I was always too scared of him to do that as a kid 😂
This level looked so good I couldn't get over the fireflies when I played it I kept going back to look at them 😊, my T-Rex died in the wall tail sticking out 😂
This was the most amazing and beautiful level 😍 I can’t believe anything could top this but we’re only at the start of the remasters 😂 Haha oh no! 😅 Glitchy T-Rex death sounds hilarious though 😃❤️
I just completed St Francis Folly last night. I’m dreading doing colosseum. It was always the most confusing for me as a kid.
Lost Valley is so iconic, and it was good fun to (re)discover where exactly all the secrets are!🥰
I still like the old graphics and found myself toggling back to them repeatedly during my playthrough, mainly for clarity/lighting.
I just found your channel and I really enjoy your commentary. This game holds a special place in my heart and it’s obvious it does for you too.

Hi, I thought the original lost vally was under a very dark sky like a thunder clouds blocking out the sun and making it dark. As there was no buildings with there lights one making it shine. And the vally was stopping the light as well. Once I got that in my head I got on with the level. And I loved it to bits.

I always felt this was inside a giant cave. You feel more isolated,. It's strange and eerie like someone described it. I was disappointed when I played Anniversary and suddenly saw blue sky. But I have to say this looks good :D One of the best games ever.
I get that! The cave feel definitely felt more secluded and claustrophobic 😅 But this is so so beautiful! They did an amazing job giving it a sky but still making it feel like a mysterious secret 😍

Toby Gard once said (in tomb raider anniversary commentary crystals) they wanted to add sky in some places like Lost Valley or in sphinx levels but they didn't had proper programming tools at the time to do it, not much programmers in the team and they were working on very almost insanely limited time on making this game. He knew that people would think that lost valley and other locations were all set in caves dark caves and he was disappointed by fact they couldn't do it better
Oh this is cool! I didn’t know this! I get that Toby was probably disappointed that his vision couldn’t be what he wanted, but the original game still turned out wonderful 😍 Even with the black skies 🥰
@@suzannetheraiderfor more interesting info about making TR1 and comparing to remake you should finish Tomb Raider Anniversary (TR1 remake) to unlock commentary crystals (looks same as save crystals) in key points in game such as this Valley or Colosseum (which supposed to be round but again they couldn't make it) were Toby with some TR Anniversary director reviewing, comparing and explaining how TR1 development process was going, his ideas that couldn't be put in game due to the serious lack of time and how they changed stuff in remake 😊

When you eventually go for the 'shotgun before cogs' achievement, you can save a little time and effort by just jumping into the water after you have the gun, and letting the current take you back.
Love how enthusiastic you are about the improved graphics, especially the sky.
One change I particularly like is that the T-Rex has sharp teeth rather than the oversized dentures he originally had.
16:19 Well, Lara still has to visit China and the South Pacific to properly teach Rexy and the Raptors the meaning of 'extinct'.

OMG Suzanne! I can not express enough how incredible it is to be reunited with those games after about 15 years! 😍😍😍 I had almost forgotten how fun it is to play them myself and I still got the moves down. Lara is running and jumping and flipping and turning and shooting and platforming her way through the lovely remastered scenery. They have done such a great job with all the little new details and props here and there without obscuring our imagination from back in the day. I bet everybody wished for the game to look like the FMVs one time or another and that is more or less what we got. 🤔😁😍

Hi, Suzanne. Fish can drown. As you take something that breaths air. And something is keeping them in the water they would drown. Because there is not enough air in the water for your lungs to take out and breath. Now when we take a fish out of water there is not enouth water in the air to go over the gills so the fish can't breath. And it drowns. So its the same as anything that breaths air, but the other way around.

At times there's one thing I like better about the old graphics though, the contrast together with the saturated colour pallet. By comparison everything blends together with the new graphics and it makes it a touch drab. The black sky doesn't bother me because of the way they implemented it, it made sense ... still does imo. They did such a great job with this level I can understand why it was your favourite.
Yes the contrast was certainly better with the old graphics. My one complaint about the new graphics is everything is a bit too dark, I guess that connects to the blended in effect you mention! But over all the remaster is amazing and this level is beyond beautiful 😍

I’ve gotten up to this point in my playthrough so far with modern controls and tbh I think I might end up switching back to tank controls. I feel like the modern controls/camera aren’t too great for things like smaller areas/precise jumps. Still having fun tho nonetheless, I love this remaster!

But I guess once you get used to them it might be just fine with them. I am just a creature of habit and I feel like tank controls are in my DNA 😂 This remaster is so amazing 😍
I also started with modern controls, i found it too fiddly. I understood that this original game engine is made for the precision tank controls. I took a little time to play around with the tank controls to get used to it, and its so much better. Maybe they could of offered a hybrid version of tank controls, but they didn't or couldn't. Anyway give it a go.

The Lost Valley is my favorite level in Peru, but not in all of Tomb Raider 1 remastered. The environmental effects, the vegetation, the sky look amazing. I also really like dinosaurs. The views that you can enjoy here are breathtaking. The climbing passages and secrets are a good foretaste of what is to come in the game. The shotgun is a good weapon, and I prefer to use it over the pistols when I have enough shots. But it's not my favorite weapon in the game.

Addendum to tank controls. Before, I really only played the game with the keyboard, without a mouse. I still get knots in my fingers today when I want to adjust, change directions, turn or try to reach the edge after a long jump. I actually used to play the game on the up/down/left/right key (d-pad) keyboard. Now I would have to adjust the mouse sensitivity when controlling the tank accordingly. I'm not used to playing this way anymore. That's why modern control with WASD on the keyboard and with 3 mouse buttons is much more pleasant, and the games have become much easier for me.

I feel like a kid in a candy store revisiting these levels in the remasters! The Lost Valley made my jaw drop when I reached the valley. It's the way the location was meant to look! I just got to Palace Midas in my playthrough and I can't wait to see the updated visuals in this location's many highlights!

Lost valley is just gorgeous. When you reach Greece look up in the big rooms like the entrance of Saint Francis Folly and see how they fixed the fact that there is light in an enclosed room, it's beautiful! I'm at the cistern now and I keep losing my mind over the glow up. On another note I can't believe how much I have forgotten about the enemy placements in the levels and I keep getting jumpscared to death, shouting like a mad man😂

As lovely as the sky is, it takes away from the claustrophobic dread that immediately returned once you switched to classic mode IMO.

hey i like how you play,no concern for saving med pacts & taking enemies straight on with jumps,flips & pot shots... ha ha! that's the fun part of using Lara(not sniping enemies from ledges).yeh i was blown away by how good Lost Valley looks & plays. also, "Folly" & especially Palace Midas.can't wait to get to The Opera...my favorite TR2 level where Lara trashes lots of goons with her flipping pot shots...really enjoy your play thrus and isn't this game a delight?!!

@@suzannetheraider i do foolish well & take enemies head on 'cause it's like how i 1st played the game.i chew thru medpacks & ammo like chicklets...'cause they'll be more ..i had to re-learn tank controls 'cause i love the sideways strafing/shooting flip of TR1.BloodRayne first changed 3PS controls then,Vice City & soon Lara was doing the sideways run(insted of strafing-aimed at your target)..i'm taking a break from AC Odyssey; if you want a challenge & lots of fun..i highly recommend Kassandra's adventures!
I once hoped that one day Lara Croft would only use tranquilizer bullets when fighting animals.
Me too! They had a tranquilliser gun in Underworld, but I never used it, which is awful 😂🙈
12:33 "STAWPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP" was so funny ! but i love how you can switch back and forth to the og version. Unpopular opinion- i like the black sky in the og lol it made the trees and dinosaurs pop more but seeing the clouds & sun was an awesome touch !
Haha 😅 Ye I am so in love with switching graphics 😍 This is honestly the most fun I’ve had with a game in ages 😃 Not an unpopular opinion at all! A few others have said the same and I totally get it! It has a scary claustrophobic secret feel with the black sky, but I do think they did a great job adding the sky and still making it feel like a hidden valley away from the rest of the world 😍

I can't imagine another TR1 level being so stunning as this - the outdoor setting really shows off the upgraded graphics. I'm really looking forward to TR2 for that reason!

I really love this dinosaur Raptor colours.. and Trex always scared me.. seeing the Trex update is better than the old one LoL .. and amazing how they actually added a Sky and sun and the sun light in the Cave's... Awesome graphics that vastly improved this level. i enjoyed watching it. on a constructive criticism point I'd say the Trex went down far too easily if you ask me. no fight at all!! PS Did you know that you can use camera mode to search for items if you can't find something? Well done 😀

Recommended mods from Nexus (browse when 'safe' as there are some NSFW mods):
-Improved Animal Textures. They look SO much better with this!
-Invisible key fix. Fixes the cistern keys
-Pierre's uncensored shirt. Only recommended if you really dislike censorship myself. Pierre had a shirt with a topless woman in the classics. They've censored it in this remaster.
-Upscales FMVs. Only for TR 1 right now. I'm... not impressed with the FMV upscaling. This is slightly improved... and I do mean slightly. Still, better is better.
-TR 2 sound improvement. Higher quality sounds for TR 2.
-TR 3 louder SFX. For some reason a lot of sound effects in TR 3 are shockingly quiet. Check yourself and get this mod if it seems quiet to you.

That medipack that blends in is the reason I spent extra 30 minutes 'cause I wanted to collect all the pickups 🤦🏻 That's why I've decided to keep the interactive indicator on, no matter what. In the beginning I was against it, but now I see it's usefull.
The indicator is very useful because those medipacks do blend in so much! 😅 I find myself giving everywhere an extra glance around too to make sure I don’t miss anything 😂
I hope they bring this out for ps3 and ps Vita one day

I have seen mods but when I played the game without mods I was like 😮 I couldn’t believe the sky also u get a trophy if u find the shot before fighting the T. rex

I meant to mention in the last video, that I'm kind of glad it took so long for this because it just ended up being given to the right people to do it justice. While I can see why some may want a remake with more fancy things going on (like Annivesary, only more modern), it just looses it's charm in that. It's still impressive when things like that happen (Spyro for example). But they often change up the art style (... like Spyro) and gameplay. It's just nice to have easily accessible, working modern versions of games that look how they looked original *and* with improved graphics like this. It's really impressive what they did.
And, from what I've played so far and seen so far at least, they didn't do too much to where it impacts readability of the levels. Other than keys looking ridiculously invisible because they're so small and have the same color as the ground most times. They should probably patch that, but otherwise things like trees/bushes/etc aren't overdone like Halo CE Anniversary had issues with. Can't see anything (it also changed atmosphere).

I completely agree! I always wanted remasters of Tomb Raider, not remakes. I didn’t like Anniversary. For me the classic Tomb Raiders are so perfect! They just needed a fresh coat of paint and all the compatability issues sorted! This remaster is a dream 😍 They did such a great job but yes the keys! Why? 😭😭😭 I walked right over one in the cistern and had to go back to get it 😭😭💔

Haha yes I’m very set in my ways with Tomb Raider 😂 I think I’ve just played them so many times with tank it would be so difficult for me to try the modern 🙈 I for sure thought it was a massive cave and never understood why it was called Lost Valley 😅
I played Tomb Raider 1 a lot on my sega saturn when I was a kid. I bought this game on Steam yesterday and I liked so much but, I think they could update the inventory system, and the save/load functions, sometimes this functions are really confusing.
I hope you enjoy playing through these games again ☺️ Yes the inventory can be a bit confusing at times, but I think they were very limited with what they could update with the mechanics of the games unfortunately 😞
When I first played Tomb Raider I thought Lost Valley was in a cave too, my 10 year old brain didn't really question how there were dinosaurs, plants, and light in an underground cavern. 🤣

**Warning - wall of text incoming :)** When the PS1 first came out I was the only one out of my friends that could afford the almost 700 bucks it cost for the unit, 3 games, 2 controllers, and memory cards (the unit was 400 D: ). They all came over to watch me play this game, no pressure, lol. But the Lost Valley was the level that gave us all the ooos and awwws and woke us up to just how feeking cool video games had become. When you first walk out onto that ledge that was so high in the air and you could see the tunnels way ahead, it was the first time in ANY game of that time that we all felt grandeur, it was awesome. Going into the valley and killing a couple raptors then running into the wide open valley, awesome. Then watching the screen shake and hearing the roar of a LARGE Dino running towards me.... I about soiled my underoos and threw the controller into the air while this huge Rex bent down, chomped on me, took me into the air, shook me till I was dead and dropped me on the ground and walked away.... I was panting in fear lol. It still to this day was one of the most excellent moments in any of the vast video games me or my friends have ever played to this day. I played this game for months, found all the secrets, and the people that I worked with at the time loved hearing my stories of my Tomb Raider experiences from the previous evening. I am so glad to see this remaster and I have it on my steam wish list waiting for a sale. Thank you @Suzanne for showing this series, I am enjoying it very much.
This was such a lovely story thank you for sharing 🥹❤️ I had a similar experience with the T-Rex 🦖 My family and I couldn’t figure out at first what those red things were running towards us, we didn’t realise they were raptors 😅 and then my god when the screen started to shake and the T-Rex appeared! 😱 My sister and I screamed and screamed as my Dad yelled trying to get Lara away from it 😅 Such great memories and I’m so happy we can have the experience again in the remasters 😍

i play with modern controls! to answer your question about those precise jumps with them - absolutely horrible, 100% 💀 but i still prefer them, i do a little loop in a circle on small platform to build up her momentum to do a running jump in modern. looks silly but works well! not as well as the tank controls but i find it fun :D
Oh interesting that there are little ways around the tricky things with modern controls ☺️ I’d say once you get used to them the modern controls are great 😃

Btw. I use modern controls and they're awesome. I can do both, I've played TR so many years with the tank ones, but I'm not going back! Tank is cool for its time, but not when there's an alternative. The new folks are not the only ones that have to learn how tank controls work, but also the "old" folks have to learn how the modern ones work. This go both ways. As soon as you understand how to use the modern controls for a grid based game, they become superior in terms of speed and flow. The only issue with the modern ones is the camera that gets nuts in tight corridors and rooms. For example I've fallen so many times in that stream of watter just because of the camera. Every single jump can be performed flawlessly with the modern ones too. And there s no need for a back step in order to perform a running jump, that s why there s no way of doing it ( exept that you can do it with the guns out wich there's no need to do it for jumps, only in combat). Keep in mind that you can perform a running jump without actually running if you do it as soon as you released the walk button and jump immediately.
This is a great review to hear about the modern controls! I’m sure once they are learnt and gotten used to, it feel just as excellent to play with them ☺️ I’m just such a creature of habit and know this game like the back of my hand with tank controls, that’s it’s hard for me to change 😂

I guess the new Avatar game done that for me in visuals but thats a new gen game and not an old classic

I reeeeally wasn’t a fan of what they did with this level in Tomb Raider Anniversary… turning the T-Rex into a very restrictive boss battle. I’m glad to have this version back where he’s just a regular enemy… one you don’t even have to kill if you don’t wanna… I tend to just leave him alive so I can be in awe.
I wasn’t a fan of Anniversary in general. I always love and go to the original, so this remaster is a dream come true to me 😍 Awww that’s lovely to leave the T-Rex alive ☺️ I’m always way too afraid of him to do that 🙈

She is a casual gamer she can't get the shotgun first this is how you know she is a modern gen z gamer. lol it takes less then 5 mins to get it and get back. Also you could have used the shotgun to kill the T-Rex and raptors.

This Old first Classic game Of Tomb Raider is a Joke it's feels like this game for a Little Children's! Thanks tO Crystal Dynamics we a a much better Version of Real Lara Croft with much better CutScenes and Natla in Tomb Raider Anniversary looks more Pure Evil Witch Woman than the Classic Version! and in the End We fight against Natla and the Old Classic Version we don't!🤦🏽♀️
Literally the last room of the original game is fighting Natla...
