  • Although competitors at the World Championships in ITF patterns have an excellent standard and seem to perform almost flawless patterns, to the trained eye, there are still mistakes that can be spotted. In this video I show you 7 common mistake that these top competitors sometimes make.
    World Championships video footage recorded by the International Taekwon-Do Federation.

    Disclaimer :
    I recognise Grand Master General Choi Hong Hi as the true authority on Taekwon-Do. The information in my tutorial is based on my interpretation of Taekwon-Do as taught to me by the Founder General Choi Hong Hi and as referred to in his book ‘TAEKWON-DO’ (5th Edition 1999) Published by ITF and printed in Canada.
    Other Taekwon-Do Masters and Grand Masters may have a different interpretation of Taekwon-Do theory and practice, so if you are a Taekwon-Do student, it is important to check with your instructor if you are not sure about which interpretation you should be following.

    - don’t drop so low at relaxed stage of sine wave motion
    - relax shoulders
    - use core properly for power by jerking the abdomen
    - rhythmic motion with no pauses
    - fluid and flowing without pauses until end of technique
    - pause often occurs after second stage of sine wave; there’s parts where you slow down as you change direction but shouldn’t pause
    - staying relaxed is key to flow in motion
    - long pauses break flow

    I find myself becoming the world champion highly unlikely, but patterns are by far my favourite area of taekwondo, and for the last few months, I have been practicing them pretty much every day. Your videos have been an important addition to my instructor's teachings and the studying of gen. Choi's Encyclopaedia, allowing me to improve my technique significantly. Much appreciated, Sir.

    Grand Master, I definitely see these in my patterns, especially the pausing in the sin wave and hunching my shoulders. I will certainly be mindful of them. Thank you very much.

      @@porter-hkd4084 I used to think the same, but it's similar to shadow boxing. You have an imaginary opponent you visualise using the techniques against. Plus they're actually very stamina demanding, and teach you quite a lot about the logic of applying Taekwon-Do in real combat. I can understand why it seems useless to anyone looking in though

    Sir these mistakes are taught on purpose to try and change patterns into a show more than what they were really designed for which training to develop perfection in fundamental , intermediate and advanced techniques , to be able to train alone and to increase internal power . The competitors aren’t to blame , it’s the instructors, masters and Grand masters which are changing patterns to suit competitions . Who’s to blame for that purposeful change to suit competitions? Not sure . All I know is in the whole encyclopedia of Taekwondo there’s only 7 pages dedicated to tournaments however the ITF today looks like it’s basing everything on tournaments. I don’t have anything against tournaments I’ve competed myself in national and international levels but the art of Korean self defence should take first place over tournaments. They’ll be heaps who don’t agree with me that’s for sure but that’s my opinion as a 5th Dan black belt who’s has been training in the art since the age of 9 and now I’m 39 . I have also had my own school for 18 years and coached competitors at national level tournaments. Taekwon

      @DonatoNardizzi  Před 5 lety +7

      I agree with you. There is a place for competition training but it should only be a fraction of the student's complete training, which should also include real self defense, perfecting technique, developing power, learning the 'Do', etc.

    Thank you very much for your noble work. Very good explanation. I like your old-school ITF style. I think that the "pause fashion" in the
    patterns and deep sine wave movements came from North Korean competitors.

    Hello Grand master Nardizzi, I have always been told I’m too stiff in my patterns, do you have any advice you can share with me to overcome this problem? Thank you

    • @DonatoNardizzi
      @DonatoNardizzi  Před 4 lety +4

      I have couple of suggested methods to relax more during patterns. One is to practice each move starting slowly and then speed up suddenly at the end when you drop your body to execute the technique. Another way is to do the movements with your body very limp and try to get power from throwing your mass into the technique rather than tensening the muscles (this method worked for me when I tried it as a red belt).
