O Canada (Ô Canada) is the National Anthem of Canada since 1980. It was composed in 1880 by Calixa Lavallée and written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier in French, and by Robert Stanley Weir, in 1908, in English. It became the de facto national anthem of Canada in 1939, while God Save the King serves as royal anthem.

- Hudba

@@christophermichaelclarence6003 Yes but no, France may have lost the Seven Years War, but the colonists that lived here still existed and their descendants too.
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
O Canada!
Land of our ancestors
Glorious deeds circle your brow
For your arm knows how to wield the sword
Your arm knows how to carry the cross;
Your history is an epic
Of brilliant deeds
And your valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights,
Will protect our homes and our rights.

When the Separatists were in the news in the late 60s, De Gaulle went to Canada and gave the Separatist slogan, "Vive le Québec libre!" which irritated many Canadians, even French-speaking ones.
Not long after this, a patron of a business in Montreal went into a restroom and saw this message on the hand-dryer: "Push this button and hear a message from De Gaulle."

I don't know why, but I've always thought that without its French heritage, Canada wouldn't be the same.
Think about it, they were the ones who created the country's signature dishes like the poutine, they were the ones who created this great hymn, they were the ones who gave Canada its name and the first ones to inhabit it, of course, after the indigenous tribes that already inhabited their territory without even being Canada. Without a doubt all these details make Canada an amazing country, where different cultures live together in such a way that each one can complement the other in different ways. I hope that the secessionism of certain regions has ceased because a united Canada is the best they can have :)

The French version talks about carrying the cross. This is not in the English version..Does this refer to converting the First Nations to Christianity?
No, it just reminds us of that time when soldiers or explorers wanted to show their faith. Other time but it is truly historical too.

I do not know how the U. S. National Anthem is regarded by Canadians. As an American I am impressed by "O Canada," in English or French. :)
This is a bad analysis. It is a French anthem, not a British one. British just stole it for their "Caynayduh".
@@veroniquetremblay8646 So English speaking Canadians should just shut up and do nothing, eh?
@@dougmontgomery1868 Well, they should probably just write their own anthem instead of stealing ours, yes. That's Canadian history for you. Not beautiful. Ever heard of the Acadian genocide? Do you what the Maple Leaf, Ô Canada, beaver, etc truly mean? They were all ours, before they were stolen by the British Canadians. Same for the name "Canada" by the way. Don't blame me for telling you the truth about that shit federation.
Were the English lyrics composed during the lifetime of the French composers? I sense some ill-advised bigotry on the part of at least one French Canadian here, as if the British should relegate themselves to an alternate universe. I thought Charles deGaulle was dead.
My grandfather was born in New Orleans. As you can tell from my name, it is very likely that I have Acadian ancestry myself.
I admit that I do not know the history of what happened in Canada to French peoples including the Acadians. In any case I will not concoct a blind hatred of all British (or English-speaking people, including Americans) because of it.
