    • @ashm7922
      @ashm7922 Před 3 lety

      @Nicholas Sindlinger Neither is the Hot 100. For example, Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On spent 2 weeks at #1, and it's Celine's biggest song. My point was that your initial logic about not entering until the 8 week mark doesn't make sense, because some of her biggest-selling and most memorable songs like Always Be My Baby, Hero, and Vision of love peaked for less than 5.

    The difference between One Sweet Day and Old Town Road is that, One Sweet Day is the longest-running debut #1 in history until now and it named as "90's Song of the Decade" while Old Town Road didn't debut at #1 spot on Billboard Hot 100. OTR took few weeks before it reached the top spot and it spent 19 weeks a top but it wasn't name as "10's Song of the Decade." Btw, All I Want For Christmas Is You has a big chance to get OTR's records maybe 5-6 years from now! 😊

    In the earlier days it was MUCH harder to stay long at the #1 spot. While the radio can hold your song high, it is the buyers fluctuation of new songs that pushes you down the charts. People bought your song in the first week, but than they did not impact the charts anymore as they played their record on their players. You need a new rooster of buyers in the second week. And after they bought the single and hold it at #1 for a second week, you need to look out for other new buyers in the third week, and so on...
    Today you have an audience that plays your hit single week after week constantly on streaming services, meaning the SAME people hold the song up at #1 for weeks and weeks.
    8 of the 10 longest running songs inside the top10 are from the streaming era, record holder Post Malone just broke his own record.

      I'm going to keep it all the way real. Nowadays, any artist can really get a number one. It's so easy to. If you're the most played out and the most appealing to a certain group of people you're bound to get a number one. I don't diminish anyone's success but in this day and age, you don't have to really do much to get a #1 on the bbhot100

    • @wpmsd
      @wpmsd Před 4 lety +19

      @Aaron Glover Actually, that's not correct. The Hot 100 has always factored in radio play, from its inception in 1958. In fact the reason Billboard created the Hot 100 was because at the time there were charts covering best sellers in stores and most played on jukeboxes and radio, and Billboard wanted to have one definitive chart which captured both sales and airplay. In 1984 Billboard starting publishing separately the sales and airplay charts which went into the Hot 100. I remember Stevie Wonder's I Just Called To Say I Love You was the first #1 on the new radio airplay chart (it was also #1 on the Hot 100 that week). In 1991 Billboard started using BDS airplay monitoring data, rather than just having radio stations fill out a form (which was ripe for fraud, as you can imagine). Songs started staying at the top longer. And then in 2013 they added streaming which has resulted in songs staying at the top much longer than in the past.

    • @sylobloc4774
      @sylobloc4774 Před 4 lety +4

      Wouldn't it be harder to stay #1 today? With streaming, youtube and social media, all it takes is 1 viral post to get a new #1. Radio is more stable because it accumulates spins over time.

    It’s weird how quick it has been to break several of Mariah’s chart records in recent years. In 2020 she had the record for most debuts tied by three artists and then broken, all because of social media tactics and similarly for how Despacito and OTR tied and then broke the longest number one records. It will probably be a good decade or two before someone else has more than 19 number ones, but there will be so many people getting 10+ number ones in the next ten years, even without any legendary status like Madonna, Whitney, Diana and Mariah had to have.

    No other female can even get close to Mariah's longevity at the top spot of the BB chart and potentially next December All I want for Christmas will make her the only artist with long lasting #1 singles (more than 5 weeks) in 4 different decades. I guess holding the record of the artist with the most accumulated weeks at #1 with 83 weeks, next is Rihanna with 60 weeks. Heck only the Beatles beat Mariah in numbers and Michael hi had singles in 3 different decades with more than 5 weeks. We all love and respect the Queen of the Billboard charts, often imitated, never duplicated. The fact that a song of horse with 30 different remixes surpassed a beautiful, soulful, perfectly executed and fulfilling song like One Sweet day which debuted at #1, no remixes, no streaming, with competition like Whitney, Celine, Michael, Janet Jackson, Maddona, Alanis Morrisette it's absurd and embarrassing. What are aliens going to think when they come? Totally worth it to eat this species and explode their planet

    The Beatles and Mariah ❤️ best eras ; 60s/70s best for Rock N Roll by far. 80s best for Pop music and power love ballads. 90s was the best era for Hip hip and rap. 2000s ? It sounds like the hybrid of pop/hip hop/dance era.

    Love that Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus broke the record. The backlash of removing the song from the country charts helped turn the record into one of the most popular this century.

      agreed! Old Town Road is such an important song. its an anthem for my generation, musical populism, rebelling against the industry, etc. its not only a great song but a transcendent phenomenon. czcams.com/video/xBW6KHkYnXE/video.html this segment here describes it perfectly

    Actually the artists in the old days are more talented and produce better songs because it's really hard to just get one number one song.Nowadays ,it just based on popularity and streams.The songs now are forgettable,and even some artists are just plain overrated like Drake that always get number one because of tik tok or whatever...

      Charts were always about popularity what do you mean. To get a number 1 you need the most popular song at the time. Drake is simply the biggest artist at the moment and therefore gets the number one spot, similar to the beatles in their era.
