iRacing Now Has AI for IndyCar, And It's the IndyCar Experience I Wanted

  • Carset and some info below :
    2021 AI skins and rosters:
    www.tradingpai...
Tracks iRacing needs still if you wanted a full "proper" IndyCar game:
    St. Pete, Toronto, Nashville
Tracks iRacing has that need AI added still:
    Belle Isle
Tracks iRacing has already, AI for, and that the real series should have:
insert most every major oval you'd like that still exists
    Features missing:
Honda/Chevy engines (they only have one, forget which it was in the iRacing car), qualifying rules, not sure the AI actually uses P2P, rain, FCY on road courses
When you consider it's not an IndyCar game nor tries to truly be one, it's really pretty dang close.
With some tidying up the AI balance and cold tires so the season functionality would be viable I'd actually want to run an offline season for once - could make a really solid "best of" calendar given people not showing up to oval races isn't a problem in a video game...

I feel like iRacing is coming together as a better and better general-purpose sim. If only you didn't have to pay for the online services to race offline.

Exactly, I’d pay $100 for all the ai content. One time fee, no subscription no online racing but for whatever reason they don’t seem interested in additional revenue streams.

@@christopheralfveby9472 It's because everything, including the AI, are delivered as a live service. They constantly get updates, new tracks, and are implemented on new cars. If iR released the AI in it's current state as a standalone purchase, it would be very incomplete. Plus, from a pricing standpoint, I'm pretty sure we are well over the $100 mark for all the AI content (tracks + cars).

    • @artslap7520
      @artslap7520 Před 2 lety +5

I agree about being offline, they could easily change this and only enforce compulsory updates if you wanted to race online. On the other hand, I think the ongoing improvement of the sim as a whole warrants the annual fee. I get the arguments in paying for extra content, but if these fees are used (as they seem to be) to make new cars/tracks/features then I understand the payment model.

The AI in iRacing is such a unique discussion on a principle level as well as a financial one. I agree, someone should not get iRacing solely for the AI because the financial part of it is crazy (and they don't even have all the tracks for indycar). But...if someone was super into Indycar and they want a more authentic experience than anything around, maybe the allure of off-line and on-line racing is worth it? I don't know, it's a tough sell and I'm not sure there's one right answer for it. I do appreciate that AI is an option though.

This makes me wish that iRacing had a separate pricing model for single player/offline mode. Say, you pay a fixed price for the car and a select number of tracks limited to single player only, and then if you want to branch out to multiplayer you pay for the subscription. I think this is an idea worth considering, because you're not gonna get this kind of IndyCar experience in any other sim. ESPECIALLY on ovals.

I don't really race online in general, but the iRacing AI is so much better than what any other sims have to offer at the moment, and with how many types of cars are getting AI support, I get more than enough use out of iRacing for it to be totally worth it just for the AI. I really tried hard with race room but there was not enough bad people for me to enjoy it. Most games I have the difficulty set to about 85 so I get blown out by above average drivers. Until I can gain the confidence, I’m not entirely too comfortable online and prefer offline. fiddling with race (car/track/AI difficulty/aggression) is something I struggled with when I dove into Assetto Corsa more seriously than merely drifting around and/or swapping engines to/fro other cars w/ the car edit tool...

Is it possible to adjust the Ai difficulty between sessions? I've found it useful on rFactor-based titles to do practice, adjust the Ai with big swings in the difficulty if needed, then do Qualifying and adjust as needed, then after the race adjust again and use that value to start practice of the next race, if that makes sense. If it's not an option it would be rather annoying to have to constantly enter and exit just to adjust the AI.

Most of the titles I can run have mediocre-at-VERY-best AI, and it gets tiresome racing them because they lack any race craft. Either they're just too slow, or way too aggressive around the player.

Because this isn't nor ever has been the case before very, very recently. NASCAR for most of my life has been 2 road races in Cup and that's it.
Meanwhile the days of IndyCar having an oval biased schedule even aren't *that* long ago, and the reasons for lack of ovals is more the fact people don't show up and the politics at hand. (case and point, Richmond just... vanishing during COVID times, never to be heard of again...)
Worth pointing out as well: IndyCar currently has a similar amount of ovals as NASCAR has road courses, while having a schedule that's got half as many races. Proportionally, one series is much, much more balanced even though most of us IndyCar fans are screaming for more ovals.
Not sure I'd argue the jump between Long Beach and IMS in an IndyCar isn't every bit as a world removed as going from Bristol Dirt to CoTA to Daytona.
