Tyne and Wear Metro runs to fast to be light rail according to the light rail act 1896, which limits trains to 25mph and Tyne and Wear Metro gets up to 50mph.

It’s a confusing thing ngl. It isnt heavy rail but personally I think it is a Light Rapid Transit system

@@TheRealCMTransport The act which permitted the conversation of parts of Tyne & Wear Metro from British Rail to Metro operation. Refers to it as a heavy Metropolitan Railway.

This obviously isnt applicable any more as all 'light rail' systems go above 25mph for example Manchester metrolink, Although you can make the arguemnt of calling it a tram system, at least that's what they call it themselves but by any non british persons definition manchester metrolink is a light rail. The thing is in tyne and wear nobody calls it a tram neither does the signs they call it trains or simply metro and the lack of on street running is what suggests the definition as light rail, also the metro has been described as 'britians first modern light rail' as its essentially the best way of describing it cause its clearly not heavy rail, and neither is it a tram.

@@fin720s The Light Rail Act 1896 is very much still applicable. Also, Manchester Metrolink was the first one authorised as a Light Rapid Transit System and not Tyne & Wear Metro or DLR. Tyne & Wear Metro signs and announcements say trains. Also, Tyne & Wear Metro was authorised as a Metropolitan Railway (Metro). Docklands Light Railway was authorised under the London Docklands Railway act 1984. Tyne & Wear Metro is a heavy rail system, it has much more in common with heavy rail rather than light rail.

@@A-Trainspotter-From-Berkshire yeah but its a tram bassically as far as all other trams in the uk go its just a high floor network, you know how they have road signs in the tunnels and use kmph. The fact it runs partly on nr doesn't mean much does it cause sheffield tram train is still a tram
