    The old king is distraught, because his daughters tear their slippers at midnight every night, and he promises a great reward to anyone who would find out where his daughters are tearing these slippers apart.
    A shepherd boy solves the mystery. He watches the girls and even follows them to hell, where the girls’ slippers are torn, because they sing and dance with the devil ’til dawn.
    He collects proof and presents them to the king to solve the mystery and wins the heart of the youngest princess, stopping the slipper tearing.
    Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
    Directed by: Lajos Nagy
    Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
    Music: Kaláka band
    The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

      @AfianySnow29802 the eldest siblings didn't feel guilt nor shame thus got punishment. Thhe youngest feels guilt and shame for doing that thus was forgiven and married off. The stories sometimes repeat the same message and even after the repetition people still don't get it. It didn't matter if they had blonde or any other hair. The point was not to commit the wrong and if you did you should have felt guilt and ask for forgiveness.

    In the german versions of the story, the princesses are 12 and go dancing with cursed princes, who will be saved through dancing every night. Versions vary on whether there are 12 or 11 princes (and that’s why the youngest ends up with the spy) and whether or not the princes are saved

    Moral of the story: Be like the daughter who didn't get locked up. Be the youngest child as well as blond. Don't drop your silverware, don't lie when you go out dancing with devils (or as another commentor said, "drinking and clubbing,"), be reasonably cautious and don't give into peer pressure. Also shepards are magic.

    Alright, so this is pretty clearly ATU 306 (Twelve Dancing Princesses), but I'm seeing some interesting details here. Obviously the ending is the biggest difference to other versions I've seen, but this is one of the only ones I've seen that has the use of flying ointment. In European lore (and some parts of the US) "flying ointment" was a poisonous/hallucinogenic salve used in witchy ritual stuff. Although contrary to what fairy tales would have you believe, "flying" in this case was more like "astral projection".

That version goes like this: there were three young man trying to find out where the girls are going every night. However, two of the three man felt asleep before getting a chance to see where they are going, because the girls gave them alcohol. Only the third one didn't fall asleep since he put a sponge under his mouth and poured the wine into it.

    So the reason the youngest wasn't punished was because she came clean unlike her sisters but is there any evidence that the youngest never wanted to join her sisters in the first place? She seemed very worried the whole time like she was scared of getting caught, a lot of people are nervous about that when they do something bad for the first time. and when they reached the palace to dance with the devils, she looks like she's cowering.

    I noticed an interesting detail when it comes to magic items that come in sets of three in Hungarian stories.
    If the items involve a male character they come in copper, then silver, then gold, and if they involve a female character they come in silver, then gold, then diamond.
    Why is that?

    • @d4n737
      @d4n737 Před 2 měsíci +1

      It's not just a hungarian thing. Things in fairytales usually come in sets of three. There are usually also three allies, three events, three daughters... It's called "Rule of three" and it's everywhere in storytelling, you probably didn't even notice. But look it up and you'll see how many things use the number three even today.
      The reason for that is because "Two is a pair, three is a pattern". It's a very ergonomic number in stories. Down to the structure of beginning, middle and end. Simply put, two things are often too little and four things tend to become redundant. So storytellers often settle on three, just enough not to bore the audience.

      An interesting theory, and could be true. However, I've noticed a trend in these folktales that it's usually the youngest son/daughter that end up happily ever after with the protagonist at the expense of the rest. I think it has to do with the symbolism that youth equates to beauty and innocence. As it is further accentuated on this one when the elder daughters make fun of the youngest.

Its complicated, our ancient paganism were fulfilled with similar creatures and persons like christianity. There are actual hungarian pagans in moldavia and transilvania and they pray to their moon goddess "Babba" before the statue of Virgin Mary. I have read a priests interwiev when he ask them why they call her "Babba Mary", and they answered " because she is beautyfull".

    Keep calm everyone. The oldest ones were only locked in at night to prevent more escapades. They weren't held prisoner in the tower 24/7. They had it harsher because they were being a bad influence for their younger sister. And I agree with those who said "dancing" is most likely an euphemism for something more serious, as usual in very old folk tales. The same goes for the 12 dancing princesses version.

    I'm just going to go over how I saw the king's reaction to his daughter's actions.
    A father was just told his young daughters were going out every night doing who knows what with strange men (or he devil's in this case) and a strange witch/woman comes into their room EVERY NIGHT. I feel it wasn't just a punishment but it was also for their safety.
    All he did was make it so they couldn't go out anymore.
    And he married the youngest to someone he could trust to keep her in check (no. Not "make me a sandwich woman!" But keep her rowdiness in check. Translation: he has a daughter who parties and might be doing it with whoever. So he marries her to someone who's stable and can keep an eye on her so she doesn't get hurt). And it's a Shepherd boy, not exactly the most impressive person to be married to. So it was probably a punishment that way as well (and she's the youngest so she's probably not going to be queen(?)(she's a shepherds wife now) And the elder sister will so she can't be flying off doing questionable things.
    Also it's not that they had too much freedom. It's that they couldn't be trusted with it.
    If you go by the animation you can also see the youngest feels bad about what she did so she may have been married to have her settle down and turn a new leaf. The older sisters and future queen think they can't be punished and that's not good. And there was no proof the youngest did anything with devils so maybe marrying her off to someone was to keep her from that as well.

  • @Meg_88
    @Meg_88 Před 5 lety +22

    OK from my understanding is that the 2 older sisters got in trouble because they lost their virginity to "he devils" (aka they dropped their spoon/fork) but the youngest didn't.
    Basically this story says that 3 chicks would sneak out at night, have some drinks, go clubbing at night with some dudes, two of them got laid, and when they were caught, the youngest was married off to some guy because not only did she not sleep around, she was obviously hesitant about the whole thing... and the older ones were locked in their room at night so they couldn't go sleeping around anymore.... is this accurate? Lol.

    This is basically a different version the the 12 dancing princesses, and my goodness a much darker version of it at that. The princesses were genuine bonafide witches in this one flying on brooms slathered in witch ointment (which according to folklore that I've read is made from the fat of murdered babies), dancing in hell with demons. There is honestly nothing redeemable about them as they seem to do all this willingly. Most versions I have heard of have the princesses usually naively tricked by monsters pretending to be handsome men or being controlled by them where they are in a trance like state and are unaware of the danger they are in. Both times they are at least semi innocent victims that have been mislead and need rescuing from their situation. Here they are active participants... also the youngest being nervous doesn't absolve her, I think she should have been locked up with her sisters.

      Abi Farrell I’m inclined to agree with you in this particular case, since the narrator clearly states in the end that the slipper-tearing stopped completely, which implies one of two things (or possibly both):
      *(1) ::* The youngest princess only went along with her sisters’ nightly shenanigans out of pure peer pressure from her sisters, who more than likely bullied her into doing so (as evidenced by them laughing at her whenever she is frightened instead of showing any real concern for her), and/or
      *(2) ::* The shepherd was a good enough influence on the youngest princess that she ultimately changed her ways and was redeemed, unlike her sisters who presumably refused to change their ways and thus could no longer be trusted to wander freely at night.
      In either case, by all accounts, the king’s actions were a relatively fair and mild example of tough love that ultimately paid off, at least with respect to the youngest princess. And to be fair, that’s much more than what can be said for other versions of this story (which can range from the male lead refusing to marry the youngest princess because she had already danced with the demons, to the two older princesses (or even all three princesses in some versions) being convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake).
