  • Dennis Rowe (Saxon Studio) & Blacker Dread (Sir Coxsone) go head-to-head, as they recall the bitter rivalry, of how their respective sound systems rose to prominence in the early 1970's UK reggae scene. The show was net-casted in 2007 and presented by DJ Senior P, in a series called: Sound System History, on www.genesisradio.co.uk

    I was told by an elder that the tune that Blacka Dread was talking about, that Fatman played against Shaka, was called "Horseface Shaka" and, due to this tune, Shaka swore that he would NEVER play with Fatman ever again. I think that, to this day, Shaka has never played with Fatman in the same dance.

    As I recall the pursuit of music and sound systems kept many a youth out of trouble back then. Groups settled differences with the skanking challenges on the floor - not killing each other over turf they didn't even own.
    If economic power is running countries and nations into bankruptcy then yes they have it, and all colours are suffering for it.
    I believe power is achieved with cohesion. If all we do is undermine each other then how will we achieve anything

    Both Saxon v Coxsone are uk foundation soundsystems which are Indirectly and directly responsible for many of the advancements of todays generation and few really know this, trust ;). Clearly mentioned in a book titled; "Ghetto Boy's road to Success!"

    Nuff respect to these two bastions of the sound system era. They helped to keep our cultural identity alive in the face of blatant racism!. Men of any colour often have the enthusiasm of children when reminiscing past glories, music ,cars, women . Better a child than an old fart I say.
    Who conducted the 'white people laughing at us survey??' ...and who gives a toss??

    @jetblakink  Před 14 lety

    @cdrom5 I remember them skanking challenges back in the day. Peckham vs Brixton, Wandsworth man dem v Junction, Lewisham v Deptford... Rivalry was intense, but you are right about not trying to kill each other (most of the time). If my memory serves me correctly, it did spill over into ruff and tumble couple times. Usually after that Cultural roots tune, Mr Boss man, which for some reason used to get us into war mode. Something to do with the bassline methinks. "bra-braa bra-braa bra-braaah!..

  • @Rome.
    @Rome. Před 14 lety

    @jetblakink We lived in Camberwell but followed Lord Shane from Peckham. There was a guy called Albert . Baddest skanker bar none !! The brother had new moves every week and people used to just stand and watch him.No mobiles back then but I wish someone could have filmed him. True Jetblakink there was fights, but the violence was not on the scale it is now. People can call these sound sytems and their followers childish but Shaka, Coxone and Saxone have travelled the world playing to the masses

    @ninjanbounti A role model is the leading example in a particular field. D. Rowe and Blacker Dread have reached this point. If you listen, you will hear them share years of experience in the sound system field. There are many younger people who have tried to emulate the example of these two over the years. Not only do I claim this as MY country, as a black man and an original inhabitant of Earth, I claim the whole PLANET! But then that's just me, I'm not fazed by what white people do or say.

  • @jetblakink
    @jetblakink  Před 14 lety +1

    @ninjanbounti How you can describe a historical conversation about two top sounds systems in London, as petty I'll never know. Especially when a whole generation of black youth came up emulating these guys as role models. If we had this level of engagement today from our elders, maybe there would not be the killings you mention. YOU may not be interested in what is being said here, but that does not make it petty. By the way, my view is that this is MY country, and shall do as I please in it.

  • @jetblakink
    @jetblakink  Před 14 lety

    @ninjanbounti The idea that there is some connection between me not being fazed by what white people say or do, and allowing a clip by the nation of Islam onto my page, illustrates a sad attempt at a legitimate argument on your part. Maybe in your mixed up understanding of what it is you think I am about, you are able to justify what you seem to see as a contraction. If anyone is confused, it is surely you. Your view of things carries no weight on my page. You're wasting your weak words here.

  • @jetblakink
    @jetblakink  Před 14 lety

    @ninjanbounti I fail to see why black people should be concerned about what white people laugh at. If we allow that to have any bearing on what we do, or don't do, then God help us. No one laughs when ageing rockers make documentaries about the swinging 60's and roaring 70's... and yes, some of them are still playing today.
