Van Halen was awesome in the early years with Dave.
    They made some iconic music.
They also made killer music with Sammy.
You may have your choice, but they were both great.

I think that if Hendrix had lived to see and hear the arrival of Eddie Van Halen, he probably would have packed up his guitar and went home to Seattle . Just kidding but, I'm sure he would have had extremely high praise for Eddie and would have bowed to his genius.

If there wasn’t a Hendrix there wouldn’t have been an Eddy. When did music become a ratings war anyway? How useless is that? So there’s one number 1 and every player reading this is number one million and 10? Be like Jimi said when asked if he’s the “best” guitarist - “I’m the best guitarist sitting in this chair”. Any more than that is just ego, bullsht and promo hype for making strangers money.

@@webcityguymyclubb4032 You got me there. But l think life has become a rating war. Every aspect of it has become scrutinised and politicised. And besides, fans of rock music have always compared their favorite players. It's part of the fun of listening and appreciating good talent. I watched a fairly recent interview with Eddie and he was asked if Jimi Hendrix had a big influence on him. He replied no and that Eric Clapton while he was with Cream was his major influence. That used to be a topic of conversation when I was young. Clapton or Hendrix? Beatles or Stones? Morrison or Jagger? Ginger or Marrianne? It's all good and part of the FUN of being a fan.

      here's my take.....
with DLR we had the bubble gum/sex/ party and raw material from them, which is great and I love it
but when Sammy came into the group they grew up and started writing about the same topics but in a much more adult oriented way. plus they got an actual vocalist. I love David Lee Roth and all but he always struggled live and really didn't sing so much as he did stylistically talked the lyrics as opposed to actually singing
all in all they're basically two different entities
here's a juggernaut for you, but I happen to think that there best vocalist was Gary Cherone. I saw them on the Van Halen III tour and that guy was great. he for some reason didn't fit though

Eddie and Alex Van Halen are musical geniuses, period. They ARE Van Halen. Kids of immigrants who fought their way up. "Diamond Dave" had daddy the doctor, unlimited resources, and his only talent was showcasing his enormous ego and doing covers of other peoples' hits, all while bad-mouthing the actual true musicians who got him to the top.

lol "kids of immigrants"....yeah Edward and Alex were actually immigrants too, genius. They came here when they were 9 and 7 and spoke no english.
Eddie is a musical genius, definitely, but alex is not. Alex is just a good drummer. He wrote no songs.
Whatever your feelings about DLR, the fact remains, he played a critical part in the bands beginnings, his stage presence and flair was tremendous and he wrote all the lyrics and vocal melodies and that is a fact.
So no, showcasing his enormous ego was not his only talent.
He had tremendous stage talent, not to mention, he recognized the importance of video and steered and directed the three most important ones that got the band in heavy rotation on MTV.
Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher.
SAy what you want about Dave and most it is usually true regarding his ego.
But to deny what he did, makes you and the people who voted up your comment, complete fools.

Josh Fierro you simply misunderstand. Ed and Al have always been the ones with extraordinary musical talent, sure. But they never had the drive, vision, color, or charm that Dave brought to their sound. The VH Bros wouldn’t be anywhere without Dave, and that’s the cold hard truth. You need to educate yourself on the history of this band.

    • @jacsig

@@Iknowthelaw13 VH was signed to Warner Brothers by Ted Templeman based on Eddie's guitar playing, not Dave. Eddie is so effing talented he would have made it big with or without any of the members of Van Halen.

      @Iknowthelaw13 Před 3 lety +2

Jaci Sig you still do not understand the origins of this band. The Brothers kept getting kicked out of club gigs because they played music that you couldn’t dance to. It was incredible stuff obviously. But it wasn’t girl friendly. It had very little color or personality. That was Dave’s contribution and combined, that’s what made VH takeoff. It’s an equal pairing between the two of them.

But there's a ton of great guitarists out there who never made it to that level because they weren't in a band that could draw crowds. He probably didn't know any better, and gave Eddie a cigarette and a beer when he was a kid, to help him relax before playing to calm his nerves. Eddie, at heart, is shy. Sadly, it became his way of coping with media and the rocker lifestyle. In most earlier interviews and concerts he has a cigarette or booze or both. Drugs were also in the mix.

So read Eddie's interview with David Fricke of Rolling Stone a month later on this tour.
      Fricke mentions Eddie's "breakfast beer".
Fact is, when you cannot get up in the morning without dry heaving and having the shakes, and you must have alcohol to calm it, that is a severe problem.
Edward himself has talked about how he used to get drunk as early as 12 years old, always before school.
There is no need to "lighten up". That is a severe problem and nothing to be proud of. Alcoholism killed his father later this year (86) and would have killed his brother if he would not have quit that spring after realizing the death of his father as a wakeup call.

Also Dave’s band kicked Van Hagar’s ass. In the last 5 years Ed admitted that Dave was part of the DNA of the best version of the band. In the end the original VH is the best HARD ROCK version. DLR Band is the second best HARD ROCK version Van Hagar is the best RADIO FRIENDLY/ADULT CONTEMPORARY POP version. And VH III had some of Eddie’s greatest playing on it. It’s all worth listening to as long as the singers stick only to their own lyrics. Peace! R.I.P. Edward Van Halen 1955-2020.

Mrs. Norman Reedus , it is unfortunate and sad. I am a huge Van Halen fan and respect their contributions in taking rock to the next level. In my opinion, artistic people
Can be very insecure, because their art is so personal, they subject themselves to criticism, and are often defensive.. also, people who make bad decisions often feel the need to justify those bad decisions. During this particular interview both of the brothers were deep into addiction, which also opens the door foe insecurity.. do you honestly believe Sammy Quit? Eddie swears up and down that’s what happened, then he says Sammy had a poor work ethic. I’m sorry but that’s really hard to swallow conditioning Sammys constantly cranking out hit after hit in the years leading up to his career with Van Halen. I was at one of the last shows they did in Oklahoma City. Eddie was so wasted he busted his ass falling down when he made his entrance.. I do give him credit for not missing a lick while he laid on his back trying to get up. I know from personal experiences with people who are dependent on drugs or alcohol, that they can’t help not telling the truth when they were wrong. I guess I just chose to believe Sammy.. The first record they did with Sammy (5150) was as magical as Van Halen 1. It was a tremendously beneficial situation for everyone, the predictable tale of drug and alcohol abuse had.reared its ugly head once again at the end of this awesome collaboration... I was broken hearted when they split.... Does this sound plausible to you?
