If you’re so poor that you can’t afford night vision, don’t worry about it. Folks have been partying in the dark since the dawn of time and NVGs are a relatively recent development in the grand scheme of things. For all that fancy image intensification, the current autogate technology still does not completely address the challenges presented by a clever adversary who has mastered the application of a $40 flare gun. Low tech is not dead.
It's simply a capabilities enhancer to mitigate what advantages modern nightfight gear has, but you're not wrong at all. Budget systems have come a loooong way from 5, 10 years ago. Put 1 dollar aside a day in a jar and in a year you could have a very capable handheld unit. I like monoculars for the flare thing or the snooty peeps who think a really bright floodlight is going to be an equalizer lol, gotta keep at least one eye sharp if the tech goes all fvckywucky and you need to readjust the 'ol mk 1 eyeball if there is an issue. (ofc as you alluded to with autogating, that does mitigate many influxes of lightburst, but isn't finite by any stretch, yeah)

Never saw the poll. I'm running an ATN X-sight Pro 5-20X on my M-91 DMR. I picked that optic up at a farm and ranch supply store in my area. I would love to add a Wraith ( which the same store also carries) or one of the lightweight ATNs to my A2. My next purchase of that nature is most likely going to be one of the ATN Binos. In my fantasy world where the money tree is fruitful and abundant. while I would love a PVS-14 or 31, I know I am going to be lucky to get a set of PVS-7s. Which are still better than the PVS-5s I trained with once or twice.

Handheld units are worth looking into, they don't break the bank and they are handy for night shifts apart from hunting and protecting your property/ land.
In a peer to peer fight, without the resume, you’re getting stuck in a trench. Everyone should have them, but without a .mil/tactical LE experience, your resources could be spent more wisely than the $8k dual tubes. Without the resume, realistically gen2 devices become the bare minimum. With Gen 3 being mandatory for the experienced guys. You have to understand the role in which you’ll be operating in order to determine your equipment. 98% of the military exists to support 1% of it. The remaining percentage leads it.
That's kind of a given/ obvious. There's a lot of people who do not have the background/ resume but need some semblance of capability to deal with threat encroachments on their property, so there are the ancillary options I talked about in this vid (the whole purpose of it really).
And they aren't using or have a military logistics structure, forgot to add that. If worst comes to worst, they will be on their own in their isolated groups. Trench Warfare is highly subjective in the application and nature of the battlespace and type of terrain, there is no cure all solution or development everywhere and for everyone in every situation potentiality.

Guys already prep for this lifestyle in the wrong areas. How many days gasoline do you have for your vehicle? The US has way too many hardball roads for any conflict in the homeland to not become mobility based. How many days food can you provide for 4 people in the field? Why would you expect only to feed yourself? How many guns are you willing to part with to arm another? How much ammo are you willing to cache with everyone else’s expecting to never see it again. You can’t carry 8k rounds and 12 rifles. Bro the logistics rules alone are gonna eat 1/4 of this movement when they’re told their stuff isn’t their stuff anymore and combat is communistic in nature.
