As I was practising skating backwards, a friend of mine who's a figure skater gave me a few tips. One of the biggest and best advice he gave me was to... shift my weight to my heels. At first I thought I'd fall backwards but then I found that it helped me to achieve greater speed with less effort, and it improved my balance. Its logical; when you skate forwards, your weight is towards the front/ in the direction of travel. Going backwards is the same concept in reverse; you need to distribute most of your weight to your heels and lean towards the direction of travel. Its actually more comfortable to skate backwards as you can relax your upper body muscles due to the even distribution of your weight without unnecessary muscle input and hence fatigue.
This is not at all how I skate. I put my weight on the heels going forward as it lets me come over bumps much, much easier. Maybe for ice skating on a smooth surface that works fine, but the second you encounter any bump it's going to put a hard stop on your foot and send you flying backwards
Yeeeah leave figure skating for them in-line ain’t da same especially on the streets
@@Berniebud nah fr, I thought the same thing, If I do that I have to break my neck and make sure I don’t hit anything or I’ll go flying to infinity and beyond.
I skated in the 1968 to 71 that's the last time I was on skates lot of fun now it's 2023 I'm really impressed how I didn't forget now I inline skate and that was a real challenge at first it didn't take long I'm going backwards and I'm doing pretty good forward but I got to watch my speed I can't get the breaking down I Wheels are just too rough on the road they grab too much or I just ain't got the angle I'll keep working on it you got some good points when you talk about skates you control them not the skate control you when in other video you emphasize breaking l have to keep working on it thank you for the hard-work and encouragement to stay alive no matter what Shalom OHAVI
Hey bro ur tips worked properly I shifted my weight in heels and I gained a bit more speed and more distance doing it usually I did for 5 circles backwards but now I can way more with that
"i keep my stride short and tight" 1:27
That was disgusting

I've not long just started staking, I looked all over CZcams for a decent video on skating backwards and all where either shite or filmed with a toaster, then I came across your video, and channel, its totally changed the way I skate. I made 100 percent improvement when I took your advice. I get better and better every time I go out. before I'd find a disused road somewhere because I'd feel a twat, but now I couldn't care less. thank you for your video
+Lewis Colton I'm glad the vids have helped. Keep having many 'skates of a lifetime' LC!!
you used the word TWAT... are from UK? ive not long started inlines. my biggest problem is finding a local public place to skate with being beat up....
Nicholas David same dude, I had to drive to an abandoned Road and skate there. Once I'd mastered a few things I just thought sod it if I fall over, I fall over what's the worst that could happen, I'm now currently looking for a rec ice hockey team to join round Nottingham. Just get out there and skate, even if you think you look silly then 95 percent of the people you pass are 5 times as bad or have never even tried
Im frommjust outside M25 J25. I too am gonna look for a hock team.. our breed is a rare 1... sadly.
Nicholas David to true sadly
Thanks; fantastic to know that other skate freaks are cool with the rambling!
Love your videos - many thanks. At 67 I need all the help I can get.
+Roland J. Ruttledge ROCK!!!!
REIQ GM! have a great week:)
ur fake
Wow! I admire you!
hows it goin roland?
Great video! took me a while to get the staggered stance going backwards, and I fall on my face when doing backward crossovers, but when I get it right it feels great! Good thing I do my practice in an empty parking lot at 2-3 am in the morning when the world is sleeping... occasionally I may wake them up with a thud and an "OW"... :D
Frederick Zilfo LOL that's what I used to do when I started skating again after 20 years. Whenever I could, when I finished work at 00:30-01:00, I went to any flat empty space, padded up with all I had, and spent 1 or 2 hours just practicing basic moves, away from curious eyes 😃. Eventually I changed parking lots for skate parks, to gain confidence in different situations before I ventured to the streets 😅
@@Bavmorda haha thats what i do as well. since my braking wasnt up to scratch i figured at night there is less traffic. just big ass trucks lol. my wife insists i take my phone with me so she might find me by gps the next morning in a ditch. also wearing a 350 lumen headlight nowadays so i can spot treeroots coming up through the bikelane.
Even though I'm watching this several years later, thanks. This was a great help and has definitely improved my skating.
Thanks Viktor. Great to hear you revived your skating; that fresh (new again) enthusiasm must be a buzz.
I'm now doing backward criss-cross through 80cm cones.
Having watched your video I improve my rolling backwards.
Damn that's some fancy footwork
I like that you put clips of you falling. They made me lol and it's a nice change from all the hot-shot teens that think they're so cool. I feel much more inspired by seeing you having my same struggles but succeeding then I do watching someone who has it edited to perfection.
Hi Bill, cheers for the comment back. I took up skating for the first time bout 6 weeks ago after wanting to do, it but never getting round to since a kid. Now 32 I went skating for the first time with my son in law, came across and watch everyone of your vids. You really have given me direction i want to go and motivation to see it through, even when I first felt like bellend falling over in tesco car park alone. Just want to say a huge thanks for the effort you put into making your videos.
Wow dude! Thank you! Originally I could be able to turn myself around when going at a slow pace and have difficulty gaining back speed but this helped so much!
A big up Bill from a fellow Bill, only six months in and i am riding the streets the Dill stoppard way, drag stops slides ,hockey stops etc, staying LOW ! I am now drilling the backward skating so unfortunately the pads are back on, frustrating as different muscle sets and maintaining the right posture but getting there ! keep up the good work fella on the urban skating front which is my favourite way to roll !
Thanks for making these tutorials, they have helped me become a decent city skater and for going over rough terrain.
The wipeout at the very end is the best =) I will indeed be practicing these techniques and probably falling the same at the ice rink this friday! xD Wish me luck
woah there somebody go get the hoLy wAtEr we got a demon over here
@@connorclinkscale9876 lol what are you talking about?...
All the videos I watch on CZcams this one is the easiest skating backwards for beginner dude you rock.
this series is so underrated I watch it everyday.u know what they say live to ride ride to live
Thanks for the props Anouar, Roll onward bro!
You are my model =) ill tell all my friends about your skating series
Hey is that me?!
Thanks for your encouragement Joao, roll hard bro!
About the last slam. I've been there, I found the hard way skating backwards on blades can be unforgiving if your balance is not perfect. On Wheels you can still roll, correct or fall slower. On ice, once the blade catches the ice is game over.
After 3 slams on my hips I always go on ice with crash shorts.
I love this video. Watched it many times. I love skating backwards fast.
All the way from Australia Bill. You have made my life far more enjoyable! Please keep up the good work and have a beer on me when you are here!
Thanks so much first video I've seen that actually helps.
I loved the last wipe out scene!! It was so funny!!! Thank you for putting in there!! I guess everyone, even pro skaters such as yourself can make mistakes. Thanx great tutorial.
Thanks Bill! I learned how to skate backwards this summer from this tutorial.
great patinas have seen all your videos and I consider myself a fan of yours I love how you explain the technique that should be used for different types of skating surface I like the landscapes samples of your country this is one of my favorite videos and one greetings a hug. soon
Hey man, keep on doing these vids! I learned a lot from them, love them. Just trying to learn skating again after almost 15 years. You help a lot!
incredible videos to watch you have. So well explained. and your technique is awesome. Keep the flow!! thank you! Dont stop posting you are a kinda inspiration for beginners. Regards from spain!
Lol "Thats what she said" :D
I'm 57 and just started skating with your guidance 3 weeks ago. Thank you very much for your high quality lessons and videos. I wonder if you could elaborate more on how to cross over backwards?! Thanks again! Please, keep up with the good job!
Great Skating. Thanks for the info, can't wait to go fall trying it.
Thanks for posting, super helpful.
I struggled with reverse crossovers for a long time. Finally figured it out. Start by lifting one foot at a time while going backwards, and carving backwards. Then it’s easiest to start trying the crossover motion while going straight backwards slowly, almost like a side step. From there it’s totally natural to start actual reverse crossovers, just have to practice, now I can rip em!!
thank you for the effort you put in your videos
Awesome video, not only this but all! Learning a lot with you! Thanks a lot!
Thanks for your encouragement Enzo
Love this video, super interesting technique, thanks
You rock I'm so glad that you made this video thanks

I believe this was the video where I first found you... and this is the video that taught me to skate backwards. ;)
the best tutorial ever! thank you so much!
great video, totally helpful!
After watching this video I started doing exercises for hockey players in the hope I'll inline skate as gracefully as you. I always pay special attention to your arms movements.
Yes! When the arms are right the whole body is in harmony. If you're thinking about this 'A. Day', you're in deep.
Nice one guy! I never thought abtou goin backward to relax the muscles. A good tip! Thanks for the video man!
I love this background music. Don't know why, but it brings me back to field trips to Ontario Place when I was a kid.
clear and useful tutorial!
Greeting from Brazil, will definitely learn how to do that thing Haha. Thanks.
Nice tutorial. Thanks!

ur video really helped me to skate backwards...good work....couid we have another video teaching us to stop while skating backwards.
Nice.
Just spotted the fall at the end, hehe. I've spilled a couple of times so far, neither were bad, though I did have a nasty wobble on a scary fast downhill that gave me pause for thought as I wasn't wearing padding... I'll be padding it out when in doubt, I guess..
Thank you ! learned here !!
nice explanation and nice channel.thank you :)
great video thanks man

All my life I had a block against skating backwards. I finally got it 2 weeks ago and have been skating backwards and working on my transitions from forward to backwards. Next I will learn 180 turn transition.
Your the best wen i skate i think about uuu your a true street skater
Thanks fro the props V, I hope your second time around brings you to some new places.
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I did it!! Hehhe god bless you 😉
Please make a video for techniques on how to stop when going backwards! Your other video on general stopping techniques is great.
thats like perfect technique! props. i just usualy get speed 180 then drift and just carry on, its a lot easier to do what your showing if you have a small amount of speed and turn, (180 or heck 540 if u can) then that movement comes naturaly, if anyone has trouble , but spot on footing.
You are the coolest dude ever
wow....this is so nice
you have motivated me to skate i was embarassed and scared to fall and u said it yourself that falling is part of learning
for the love of god make a reverse crossover tutorial please

That was funny...Nice Video...Just getting back in skating...
Cool. First view and comment. Great bid as usual Bill, majestic wipeout at the end.
thanks for tutorial.... best lesson
Муса Мусаев Thanks MM!
Bill, your videos are really helping me improve skating. I'm trying to first learn the fundementals such as accelerate and then drag stop. Though, thanks to my height (6'6'') and low weight I can't seem to find the right posture for a proper drag stop. I'm trying to put almost all my weight on my front leg , but my right leg just makes me spin and turn when I try to stop. What would you recommend to get the balance in this situation?
Thanks bill, Keep it going.
This helped me alot thanks!
:P
you are awesome skater
Thanks for sharing
this is the video that people should be watching!
its good clip. thankyou
