Only great memories of that place. A good ground for families. Dad used to bring us kids there all the time, spacious, all seating. As a Carlton supporter the VFL put us in lots of Match of the Day's at the Park in the 80's. Against the other big teams too - like Collingwood, Essendon. There'd be 70,000+ there each and every time! Great days!
'Arctic Park'. That ground was unique, so many great games over it's life time. The Escort Cup Night grand final,so many great finals, including 1991 GF. But,It was so Bloody Cold! Many great cold Memories.🏟
I just love this. It was a simple stadium that meant a lot to us in the south-east. Such a horrible shame that OUR ground was sold to Mirvac and destroyed. 😢
Soccer is by far the greatest and most important sport on Planet Earth with over 4 Billion fans and massive in more than 240 countries. I had the pleasure of going to the old VFL Park back on Anzac Day 1984 to see Collingwood V Carlton (I was visiting from Sydney), about 70,000 crowd, great atmosphere, beautiful stadium.
I was there when 93,000 crammed in to watch Collingwood and Hawthorn on a public holiday in 1981. Sat just to the right of the Pie's cheer squad. Was there also when 'Sticks' McKernan marked on the siren against North and goaled to win it. A privilege to see Melbourne go through to the GF beating Carlton on rain soaked turf in '88. Great memories for a stadium that was never given it's due credit, or the chance to attain it's true potential after so much was promised.
Such a beautiful big ground and stadium, overlooking the Dandenong ranges and south east suburbs, was so good for Melbourne and the south eastern suburbs, Hawthorn fought to the death to keep it ❤💛💚

I played a Little League match there half-time during a Hawthorn v Carlton match in the early 90s. I drive past the remaining grandstand and redeveloped area every Saturday morning and take a moment to remember what once was.
Did you play in that Little League match in 1992? If it was that one then I have some real footage at home from that exact match. A friend of mine who lives in Sydney came to Melbourne on the weekend of the 1992 Hawthorn/Carlton match at Waverley and went to watch that game. While there he took footage of the match and the stadium with his video camera. This has now become a priceless piece of memorabilia which he made me a copy of.
@@darrenmiles-morland8038 Sorry for the late reply. I think it was 92 or 93 so it's a fair chance of being the same game. Did you get any footage of the little league match? My club played as Carlton, we lost like 14-12 or something.
It was actually supposed to be 166,000. I have a book on it. State Government Politicians stopped it because they didn't want it to be the home of football and have to travel out there. They wanted to keep the MCG as home of football so they could just go down the road. That's why they also never built a rail or tram line out there.
@@wmvaux, I did once read that it was meant to be 166.000 however in most places It says 157.000. The other thing is the Premier of Victoria when it was built Premier Bolte was an MCC member he stops all public Transport like the Glen Waverly Train was suppose to go to Rowville if that was built then a bus go near VFL park and also Premier Cain was also a MCC member and killed it
The site it was built on was chosen but it was expected that it would become the demographic/ geographical centre of Melbourne. How right they were, if only it had hung around for another ten years it would’ve been amazing for all the people who now live in the hugely populated south-east.
It is bittersweet watching this...mostly bitter. Bitterly cold out there. Bitterly long getting home. Three hours from here to Brunswick (inner northern Melbourne suburb)on one occasion...bus/wait/train from Glen Waverly/wait/tram. Unless you got there early and got a seat on the wing ten rows or so back it was not easy viewing if the play was on the opposite side of the ground in the most distant pocket. If you were a Cats supporter coming from Geelong it was especially testing as in the 1980's Geelong had to play out there 3 or 4 times a season (what's that, 240 kms round trip?). It wasn't well thought out. The V.F.L. in those days should have re-developed Princes Park or the old Lake Oval as Melbourne's second football stadium, and there is still plenty of time to re-develop Princes Park as Melbourne's third A.F.L. stadium. All the same the computer re-construction in this video brings it all back...well done!
It's just as cold if not colder at the MCG & Docklands. It was well thought out & was designed to hold 157,000 people which would be the finest stadium in the southern hemisphere.Victoria could've easily held the olympics with that stadium.
Thats awesome, such an antique of Australian rules football and culture in melbourne ,what a shame the afl corporate greed and investment into NSW and queensland got to there head.
The SE suburbs is the fastest growing suburb in Melbourne. Hawthorn and later St Kilda moved there. They started gaining new supporters from that area. Collingwog and Carlton felt threatened and pushed for its demolition (Ego Maguire and Pigs arse being two prominent opponents of Waverley). If the AFL still had it, they could use it as a weapon against the MCG which is moving football games to other stadiums for the sake of international soccer games. Not to mention moving the most convenient ground for one of Melbournes largest population
We can thank Premier John Cain for stopping that from happening. He was an MCC member and he had lots of mates in the MCC so he made sure it didn't go ahead and therefore ensuring that the Grand Final would remain at the MCG.
Typical of short-sighted politicians and business people to destroy the fabric of the game and city by having a centralized venue in the middle of nowhere, in the coldest place in Victoria, without a train line and with a surface set too low and boundaries too far in to have any atmosphere until about 60,000 were there.
Thank Goodness someone without the Rose Coloured Glasses, was only built there because Kennith Luke owned the land. If he was alive today we should all buy John Cain a beer for making sure the MCG remained the home of Football.
This was exactly what the VFL needed at the time, because there were already so many suburban grounds within 10 kilometres of the Melbourne CBD. Don't forget, this stadium was built and planned well before the MCG and Docklands were the only grounds in Melbourne. It needed to be where it was because that area was the fastest expanding growth corridor in Melbourne. Unfortunately the proposed railway line to Rowville never got built, and this contributed to its demise.
VFL Park, what a ground it was, a proper venue for Football

Is there anyway to get up the top of the Kenneth Luke stand, a tour or something? The grandstand feels so retro and cool.
