German farmers strike: A sign of wider dissatisfaction? | DW News

  • Farmers across Germany have begun a week-long strike to protest the government's plans to cut agricultural subsidies. The government has already rolled back its decision to slash fuel subsidies for farmers, after weeks of angry demonstrations. Protests planned for the next seven days include rallies that will disrupt traffic in several regions. A procession of tractors is expected to block off a central road here in Berlin as farmers bring their frustrations to the government's doorstep.

It's good that they are striking but they are striking for the wrong thing - for out-of-tax-payer-wallet-subsidies for fuel.
They should instead strike for of higher taxes for packaged food in stores and lower taxes for farmer sold food.
That way local food automatically becomes subsidized (lower taxes with money going directly from the tax-paying-buyer to a worthy farmer), longer distance food becomes penalized (higher taxes) and large store chain owners get penalized for pretending that owning the shelves is a real large added value for which they should be payed handsomely (while transport is handled by others so they are just boss pretenders to begin with).

I do know these liberal corrupt western governments are bending over backwards to subsidize green energy and Ukraine and illegal immigration at the expense of the people and their safety and security in addition to their wealth and freedom and dignity. I have no problem in such a scenario giving money to farmers. In this case, the government is removing farmer subsidies with not the goal of reducing government as you say, but with the goal of starving and subjugating the people to dependence and slavery to make an all powerful permanent evil government control grid.

the question must be asked. why is the current model so economically unsustainable that agriculture is the most subsidised sector in the EU? why must fuel also be subsidised? because what big farms produce are commodities, not actual food. all for supporting local farm shops, but small farms are not the ones guzzling so much fuel and enjoying such subsidies. the bigger the farm, the more the subsidies stack up. I speak from experience and it must be considered that the situation in the EU vastly differs from country to country.

Brits are not known to protest easily but I seen similar arguments and discontent before Brexit. And almost all agricultural sectors voted for Brexit and now regretted it because the problems are not caused by the EU or even governments *the problem is the food industry itself.*
It's monopolized and centralized and the money farmers get no longer reflects the work involved. It's not even a problem of the price for the consumers but the sharing of the profits is unfair because most is skimmed of by the corporations to enrich shareholders not farmers. Consumer are unhappy about high prices and farmer about bad revenue so someone has to syphon off the wealth in the middle.

I the spring a trailer load of tons of artificial fertiliser which was spread across the field. Twice during the growing season, agrichemicals were sprayed on the crops. Fertiliser and chemicals and chemicals had had to be manufactured and transported. After harvest the field was ploughed and stood bare, neither use nor ornament to man of beast, until spring. Then I moved to my current home a few miles away, surrounded by land too steep for arable farming, it is grazed by sheep and cattle, the grass goes in one end, the poo comes out the other and they don't need watering at any time like many arable crops do. The poo fertilisers the grass, which is green all year around (so no leaching of minerals) provides a medium for insect eggs and subsequent larvae feed the birds. The greatest difference I noticed here is the incredible variety and quantity of wildlife at all levels from insects up to mammals. Livestock farming causing global warming is utter BS, and driving 20 miles from my town to the nest nearest town, through countryside on a B road, I'll see far more cars and lorries than sheep or cows.

There is no other way to maintain regional food production. Without the external tariffs and subsidies to farmer enforced by the EU the markets would be swamped with low-cost low-quality mass-produced stuff from America, Australia and South-America. We would get dependent on trade routes and prone to weather disasters and political conflicts or even simple ship havaries in cannels.

@@AaronOkeanos I agree that you'd need some level of subsidies to avoid a regional collapse and safeguard against weather/climate/conflict/etc, but there are much higher levels of subsidies than would be necessary just for that due to just about everywhere subsidising farmers. The US being a prime example.

@@JoshuaStringfellow1 The US is using subsidies not to self-protect but to enrich wealthy donors with stocks in the food industry. The money is used to pump out cheaper products for export, to make profits and to be able to use this lever for political influence. It is clearly misused there.

The Swiss farmers are the most subsidized farmers ever in the world (EU, at least).

Smearing any protests as „supporting the Right“ has become the German government‘s mode of dismissing criticism, just as they smear pro-Palestinian protests as „anti-semitic“. It is a transparent manoeuvre, but is more likely to backfire. It paints the AfD and right wing fringe movements as champions of legitimate concerns over government policy, which is placing a huge economic burden on average and low income earners while sparing the rich and the corporations, which are paying out record dividends to their shareholders. The social democrats, the SPD, are widely seen as having betrayed the average earner while the Left has become largely ineffective. If people are turning to the AfD, a party that offers no solutions to the various crises whatsoever, that is because the rest of the political spectrum so poorly represents them. It is not the protest turning people to the AfD, but government policies.
