    Back cushions are a continuous problem for the majority of furniture owners. They either do not provide enough support or the cushions cave in every time you sit back. However, there is a simple solution to this problem. Most back cushions have one of two fills. One of these fills being feathers that have been used since the being of furnishing itself. The other is Poly Fill, which is the cheaper option that replaced feathers. What are the pros and cons of these two fills? Feather cushions offer a plush and comfy feel though, over time they degrade and the inner cover which houses the feathers will evitably start breaking down as well. This allows the feathers to start poking through your cushion covers. Plus, feathers are expensive, so when they do degrade and you need to add more to refresh the cushion to its former glory, it will be costly. Polyfill is far less expensive, however finding a quality polyfill that is plush and doesn’t clump together is difficult. And polyfill similar to feathers does not provide much pushback, so after years of use, polyfill will clump and compress together leading to the cushions looking sloppy and caved in. Just watched this episode...the bag of shredded foam, suggestion: insert smaller bags within the big bag. You can insert the small bag inside empty cushion. Easier, less mess while filling it. Suggestion 2: the stiched area you suggested to staple, perhaps attaching velcro for easy access? Loved the fact your partner is your son. God bless you both!👋🙏

      Hey there Sonia, thank you for watching and leaving that helpful comment 😊. It’s a good idea with the bags, it can get quite messy so that method you mentioned would reduce a lot of cleanup. And yes the Velcro would be a good idea just in case you didn’t put enough in or too much then you can easily adjust it. Again thank you for watching. Love your videos and glad to see you're back! Can this foam be used in outdoor furniture back cushions? Ours are currently filled with poly fiberfill and starting to go flat just like you show on the interior chair. Also, any ideas for outdoor cushion insert fabric? I've replaced ours a couple of times, yet they still deteriorate after a season or two, even though they're inside the Sunbrella-covered cushions.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey again Mae, that’s a very good question. I’ll have to do some test on it myself but when washing them in high-efficiency washer machines the spin cycle is incredibly fast. Being shredded foam I think that might help although I can’t prove it to get the water away from each piece of foam easier. As compared to a a solid piece of foam like a seat cushion. Then you would have to let dry, I would assume two days to let them air dry, if possible in the sun a few hours to accelerate the evaporation. . Now mind you I’ve never done this. So I’ll have to do a test myself and see how it goes. I would like to know firsthand so I will do the test. It’s always great to hear from you, I really appreciate you always watching and commenting. I hope this is helpful. All the best, Paul

I just received the double-shredded foam I ordered from you and am about to tackle making new sofa back cushions, replacing 18-year-old feather inserts with foam. I can't reuse the cloth inserts from the original feather fill (too messy, too tedious, life's too short). What type of fabric do you recommend for making a new insert envelope? Love the vid. I have a dilemma. I have a leather chair where the seat back cushion needs to have some filling put in because it has flattened out. There is no zipper access to this seat back cushion. I see no way to access it except for cutting. Is this still something I can do at home or am I going to have to send it out to a pro? The chair is older and it really makes no sense to dump a lot of money fixing it. Are there any options I can try to basically polish the turd? lol Thanks!

      Hey Patrick thanks for watching a video I’m glad you liked it. Yeah I hear this problem all the time with attached back cushions. Before you go cutting off the back cushions that can become a big mess sometimes. It might be easier and faster to remove the outside back and see if you see zippers when you lift up the outside back fabric.or give to a pro shop. Other than that I would not attempt to cut the back cushions off. Again I hear this problem a lot I wish they stop making that kind of furniture. If you have anymore questions send them my way I hope this was helpful. Cheers, Paul

    Thanks for the video. I purchased several bags of foam and I'm getting ready to fix my cushions, but I have a problem. The inside covers are made of extremely cheap material and are falling apart (they are a mess!). Do I absolutely need to use an inside cover, or can I just stuff the shredded foam into the finished/decorative cover?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Marybeth,
      Thank you for ordering the foam from us! In this scenario you have two solutions. You could just add the foam directly into the main cover or you could get some Dacron and fold it into the main cover so that you are adding the foam in between the dacron. The second solution will mimic an inner cover and cut down on lumps since the foam could stick to the main cover.
      Thankfully dacron isn’t expensive and you can get it from Amazon here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EHBUPFM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01EHBUPFM&linkCode=as2&tag=ucou0f-20&linkId=c3a8c7e1a91d902f81d6137a36ab1f93

    You mentioned channels in this video. I have made a couch from start to finish, but am having major frustration with the back cushions. All the foam pushes to the bottom- looks like hell after you've been sitting in it and leaves you sitting with your neck on the hard couch back(so disappointing and uncomfortable).
    Will sewing channels into my cushion liner fix this? If so how large should the channels be for best function?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety

      Hello Kathryn, yes back cushions can be a challenge to get them to look good and be comfortable. Yes, making channels will help the migration of the filling. The absolute best is to have a solid piece of polyfoam as your back cushion we have video on that. The second best is shredded foam with the insert having channels. The channels are the same size of the insert meaning they are sewn in horizontally breaking the insert up into third’s. So simply make horizontal dividers to reach to the back and the front. HOWEVER LEAVE ROOM ON THE ENDS, leave room for you to put the filler on top of the channels. I hope this makes sense. There’s no specific size for the channels,they are made to the size of your insert. Thank you for watching I really appreciate it. Cheers, Paul

    I give you guys props... I legitimately have not seen this before. Its a good idea, although Here is a better suggestion that I will give you for free
    use chopped/ground latex instead of PU foam.
    if its the lower-ILD range of from a given manufacturer the ground/chopped latex tends to fell like a feather/fiber blend, like "polycloud" or 10/90 maybe, but no quills. (the latex foamers I've dealt with use the "Nx" rating like N2, N4, N6, N8 but its all different)
    full disclosure.... not my idea. Chinese manufacturers are starting to use ground latex in place of down in some applications (its really disconcerting to see Chinese manufacturers start making furniture with latex when US manufacturers still mostly try to avoid it)
    ste.

Thank you very much for you reaching out I like your idea. Please share the videos that keeps us going. God love you for it. Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey there Jenn, thank you for watching we really appreciate it. Yes I’ve seen that before where they just stuffed polyfill inside the cover it saves them time but gives you a headache. You can just trace your cushion as it is now with any cotton fabric will be just fine. Even an old bedsheet would work,you could use that. But a simple cloth fabric will do just great. You don’t have to put a zipper in it if you don’t want too at the bottom, you can leave it open stuff your poly fill in there and hand sew it closed.in short I would just copy your cushion cover as it is. I hope this helps. Please share the video because it does help cheers, Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Rhea,
      Thanks for watching our videos! Unfortunately, we do not have a video describing how to make a channeled insert for back cushions. However if you have a pre-existing insert with channels the best way to replicate it is to use it as a template. If you don’t here is how you make it from scratch. For making a channeled insert you start with making a pattern of the cushion cover and adding about 1-2 inches more to all sides. You also need to cut out the bands and add 1-2 inches to the width of the bands. You will need additional “bands” for the channels. For simplicity I will describe making a two-channel square insert. -Let’s say it is a 24-inch square with 4 inch bands; I am going to make it a very full insert and 2 inches to all sides; cutting a 28-inch square and 6 inch bands and extra for the channel. Before I start sewing I plan out my channel in the center of my cushion. I sew the band to the center of both sides leaving enough space for my hand on both sides. Next, I would sew the bands to the insert cover as usual, leaving the bottom open to insert the filling. When filling the insert fill the top channel first.
      If you want three channels just apply the same basic directions and plan out your channels in thirds.

    Is the double shredded back cushion fill superior to the method shown in your 2016 back cushion video which seems to just replace the polyfill and add a dacron wrap and the 2019 video with the foam and dacron wrap? My box cushions are just filled with polyfill. Also when you say a bag of the double shredded back cushion fills a standard back cushion, how big is a standard back cushion? My box cushions are 37" x 22" x 4.25" without the added one inch per dimension. How many bags do I need? Thanks!

      Hey there mom knows best, thank you very much for watching the videos and letting us know how much you like them 😊. Too your question 2016 poly fill method is NOT as good as double shredded foam. Polyfill is a real problem for this industry in back cushions. A solid piece of foam for a back cushion is excellent the next best thing is shredded foam. You get the flexibility of polyfill for what we call knife edge cushions but the support of real foam. It’s fast to fill and takes the shape of the cover easily. I hope this has helped you. If you have more questions there is live chat on our site. Ucprivatecourses.com Again thank you. Cheers, Paul

    Can I get your gentleman's opinion on density for a cushion? My husband weighs 391 pounds he has his own chair but the cushion is so smashed that it hardly holds up anymore. So what density should I use for it to become a chair again? Right at this moment, I think it is a 3-inch med density foam it is a Pottery Barn 1 1/2 half chair that is Charleston chair. I think that the foam is 3 inches. What is scary is I do not have any idea as to what foam I can use for such a big man. I think the cover which is very new and is in very good shape, I just want to give him more support in the chair. By the way, I will have to order more shredding from you what I have stuffed is working out JUST FINE!!

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 4 lety

      Hey Nancy it’s great to hear from you again, that’s a great question I would go with compression 45. That’s a firm compression seems like your cushion is not very thick. So if your seat cushion band is 3 inches you’ll be ordering 4 inch thick foam at 45 compression add 1 inch to all your finished cover measurements. Maybe check the platform and see if it’s very springy or not sometimes you can put a 5/8 inch board cover it with fabric underneath the cushion. That helps disperse the weight giving you more support. Anything higher than a 45 compression like a 70 is extremely firm that may be very uncomfortable. I hope this helps it’s always great to hear from you, cheers Paul

      Hey Donna
      We really appreciate you watching our videos! Great question, with attached cushions there is either a zipper on the bottom of the cushions in which you can take out the insert from there. Or if there isn’t then they could have sewn the insert inside the back cushion which would mean you’d have to open it up via the seam. I hope this helps!

    How many bag sofa seating just one long cushion

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Sharon,
      Thank you so much for checking out our videos! Great question, I would not suggest using it for seat cushions since it will be very hard to get an even feel across a cushion. This is not a problem for back cushions since you would not add as much to back cushions as you would a seat cushions, so it is easier to get a even amount of shredded foam in each channel of a back cushion.

    Omg! Would this work for the bottom cushions also? I bought a couch and love seat set. Brand new and the cushions are fixed with tge zipper in the back. After sitting on it for about 15 min it is flat and uncomfortable I can feel the wood. Ive fluffed and fluffed it gets stuck in the zipper. I tried to send the furniture back but the company changed hands so I told the leasing co to come get it, it is junk. There is no casting over the brown polyfil..they wanted me to pay another 500 . After about 10 min on the phone I paid only $50 to keep it. So 550 total. . If this is a temporary fix I would be thrilled however without looking i know its going to be a bit pricey. I was going to take apart a pillow with this in it and put it in my cushion. And yes the polysilicon is clumpy. I was duped . American Freight furniture is a 1☆ rating and only because they know how to take advantage of people.

      Hey there, thanks for watching the video. Yeah sounds to me the foam inserts that came with the sofa is poor quality. I think you are asking if the shredded foam can be used in seat cushions 🤔. You can BUT it’s best to use a solid piece of foam for seats and shredded foam for backs. Yes foam pricey!!! It’s an oil byproduct and in 2008 oil hit an all time high foam, fabric and UPS shot up I mean way up and they never brought the price back down even when oil hit an low bottom some months back. Who knew they were crooks WHAT A REVELATION!!! 😂 Again thank you for watching. All the best. Paul

      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety

      Hello there, I have had others ask me that question. The answer would be YES. You can for sure but I’m not sure how much support it’s going to give you compared to a solid piece of foam. It’s perfect for back cushions but seat cushions take a lot more weight. If you did use it for seat cushions I would assume it would be very soft, which might be something you want. I hope this helps thanks for watching. Please share the videos it does help us when you do. Cheers, Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety

      Hi Carlyn,
      Great question, the shredded foam is comparable to a solid foam insert in terms of support. In fact I would say the shredded foam is better than a solid insert since it conforms to the back cushion cover more and you can manipulate the firmness of it. This cannot be said of a solid foam insert.
      I hope this helps!
      All the best,
      Grant

    My couch has a single Lon cushion for the seat and the back. No channels. The back poly settles towards the bottom and is very uncomfortable. I am not sure if the shredded foam would settle too? I’ve been wondering if I should put a solid foam wrapped in poly for the back ?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 2 lety

      Hello Ruth, that’s a common question and a good one at that. Yes the shredded firm would settle at the bottom of the cushion as well, if you do not have channels I suspect it would settle a little less than poly fill does because it tends to be a little more sticky, meaning that it sticks to the fabric itself, but I still think it would settle at the bottom. A solid piece of foam is superior to both of shredded foam or poly fill. We do have a video on getting a slab of solid form and cutting it for your back cushions. Please share the videos it helps us when you do. Cheers, Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey great question! You could try to put a solid foam insert inside the attached back cushion. However that will be a challenge to do. Another option is using shredded foam which is a lot easier to manage and should be able to give you a more structured look. Though I would say that it would not be a more square cushion with the shredded foam.

      Hello Sanobeia, yes, it’s a pain in the butt..... 😂. That’s a fact. So good question I’ve had other people asked me the same thing. I’ve never experimented with shredded foam and feather being in one insert. Generally you would take all the feathers out preferably outside. As your insert is inside a large plastic bag. The only thing I can really tell you is experiment with it just do one take out some of the feathers or just leave it in there and add shredded foam to it. Sew it up or close it up and see how it reacts over a short period of time. Yes if your back cushion is the only issue this is a great fix no need to buy a whole new sofa. Thank you for watching I hope this helps you. Cheers, Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 4 lety +2

      Hello Lindsay, yes I know what you talking about I have seen it a lot. What you can do, is take Polly batting about 1 inch thick. Use the absolute best inserts you have use it as a template. Trace the poly batting cut that out make the bands the proper thickness if you have boxing, If you do not have box cushions then you have what is called a knife edge cushion, same as in the video. In other words make the poly batting the same size as your cover the finished fabric. You can close the poly batting up using plier stapler, the staples will not come out when you embed them into that poly batting. Put that into your attached cover with a small opening at the bottom. You can start filling that with shredded foam like we did in the video, or you could use poly fill, the choice is yours. That would make you new inserts that I guarantee will last for many many years. I hope this has helped you on your project’ please share the videos it helps us. All the best, Paul

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  Před 3 lety

      Hi Erin,
      Thank you so much for checking out our CZcams channel! Great question, for back cushion inserts you can use any inexpensive lightweight fabric like a muslin. And I would make a cover to go over top the existing insert cover. That way that cover will hold the pre-existing insert cover together. The reason for this is the pre-existing cover may have channels which are very hard to fabricate. Please let me know if this makes sense and if you have any other questions.
