MEDEA: From How She Helped Jason Get The Golden Fleece to Euripides' Powerful Portrayal

  • Medea is one of the best 3 dimensional characters to have ever been written. She balances at two ends of the spectrum perfectly. At one end she’s the daughter of a king, niece to greatest sorceress to have ever lived, and granddaughter to the Titan god of the sun, Helios. She’s not only a powerful sorceress in her own right, but is also the ONLY REASON Jason manages to retrieve the Golden Fleece considering she gives him potions to aid him, AND THEN casts other spells on top of that just in case Jason screws up the magic! She’s a fiercely loyal woman with a gentle heart, and would do anything to protect the ones she loves ... On the other end of the spectrum, she’s a straight up murderer - so there’s that.

    A Bit About Us -
Trust us, the ancient world isn’t as boring as you may think. In this series, we're EXCLUSIVELY focusing on some badass ladies from the ancient world to bring their accomplishments and their stories into light. Despite what the classroom may teach you, the ancient authors gave each and every one of these women the time of day - it's actually the modern scholars who pushed their studies to the side, outcasting women from the educational system. But not today, Satan!

You left out the fact that Medea fell in love with Jason not of her own volition but because Hera prompted Aphrodite to have Eros shoot one of his love arrows into her. Hera knew Jason will need Medea' magic and knowledge to help him in getting the Golden Fleece. Medea's over the top love for Jason and the frenzied lengths she went to keep it borders on insanity. Did the arrow created this "craziness" in her, or merely just let her express what was there already as she would do the same things for a man she fell in love of her own volition.

    fantastic video!
The truth is that the figure of Medea is one of my favorites.
other notable moments in her life scattered across different accounts after what happened with Jason.
    - Medea sought the help of Herakles and ended up curing him of one of the madness attacks that Hera sent him.
    - When she transited through Thessaly, she had a beauty contest with the Mother of Achilles, she lost and cursed the Cretans.
-It is supposed that she arrived in Athenas and there she married the father of the hero Theseus.
    - When she transited through the Italy, she is supposed to have taught people of the desert how to charm snakes and treat their bites. ( She is associated with a deity called Angitia here ).
-When she finaly returned to her homeland after years, she helped her father to regain control, since her uncle had usurped him.

I came across this practice in Ancient Rome where, if a man found his wife committed adultery, he was within his right to kill her and the children (or at least the children). Horrifying, but since Ancient Roman & Greek cultures shared many ideals and principles, I was wondering if what Medea does to her children by Jason when he tries to marry that other princess wasn’t a parallel of that practice by the men who caught their wives’ infidelity. (I’ve also always thought of Medea as a sorceress also! Lol)

You're amazing in the way you can tell these stories, true to their nature, but also adding in modern expression to add zest to the story-telling. Thanks, Erica.

The chopping up of Medea's brother reminds me of the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris being cut up by his brother Set and having to be put together by his sisters Iris and Nephthys (who then partially resurrect him)

Jason was an idiot to leave Medea. Clearly she would do anything for him. But then, maybe Aphrodite got involved again, and had Eros shoot him.

I knew nothing about Euripides when I first read Medea, so I fully believed that Euripides was a woman until Stephen Fry corrected me, because I did not believe a man (especially an Ancient Greek one) was capable of writing Medea’s opening monologue.

Euripides really outdid himself with this one - it’s just JAW DROPPING!

While I like both pieces of work for different reasons Jason and the Argonauts by Apollonius Rhodius and the play Madea by Euripides are two different pieces of work, the play takes the characters from an already established story it isn't one continuous cannon and many people seem to miss that.

Good one. Although Medea also received these powers from something other than herself. Isn't everything a gift? :)

Question 🙋‍♀️ y do they say it was a goat fleece in old texts , but in the arts they show a golden lion fleece. And she went mad when she was hurt by a man . She loved too hard

Child birth is scarier than going into the battle field and risking your life? 💀💀

Child birth is also risking your life, especially in ancient times when a lot of women died giving birth

I dare you to watch a childbirth in real life. It is extremely painful and women can die giving birth, especially in ancient times.
