  • Star Trek: Voyager's holographic doctor, Robert Picardo, also serves on The Planetary Society Board of Directors. However, he is not the first connection between Star Trek and The Planetary Society. In 1980, the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, wrote a letter and sent it out to a Star Trek fans mailing list. In the letter, Gene invited his fans to join us on our mission to explore the cosmos.
Hear the letter as read by Robert Picardo, listen to his Jean-Luc Picard impression, and see inside Bill Nye's office for more Star Trek artifacts on hand at The Planetary Society.
    Read the letter here:

    About The Planetary Society:
The Planetary Society has inspired millions of people to explore other worlds and seek other life. With the mission to empower the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration, its international membership makes the non-governmental Planetary Society the largest space interest group in the world. Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman founded the Planetary Society in 1980. Bill Nye, a longtime member of the Planetary Society's Board, serves as CEO."

Excellent job my friend. I enjoyed your reading of the letter from Gene Rodenberry. Thank you very much for the tour of the Planetary Society today with my wife Diana. We enjoyed your company and that of Bill Nye.
    Best wishes Michael C.

Being both a Star Trek fan and a charter member of The Planetary Society, I was happy to be reminded that I share my birth day, September 8, with Star Trek Day. It seems particularly fitting that Star Trek Day is on the 8th, as “8” is an infinity symbol positioned vertically. May we all “live long and prosper.”

He was totally great in Voyager. I loved the doctor from the original 60s Star Trek too. They were both perfect for their given ships. I like anything Star Trek but the original series & Voyager are my personal favorites.

I wholeheartedly support the idea of exploration of our solar system and even perhaps one day, the stars. But we must first learn to take care of the planet on which we now live. The birthplace and cradle of all humankind. As we take our first baby steps towards other worlds, let us vow not to export our bad habits, but endeavor to only send forth the best of humanity.

It's a nice sentiment but sadly one that no longer really applies to Star Trek. The new shows lack the complexity and nuance for sci fi it once had. Nevertheless great video with a good tone. I wish the shows could do as good as this.

cordially Yours, greetings from Konrad Marek.
in the 1960s it was: "Come to Houston, we are going to the moon!"
now it should be: Go for 1A/'Oumuamua ( see i4is.org )
if it contains metallic resources, it could be the basis for NCC 1701 to resupply, enlarge the ship on the go, and then dash on!
What year will it be? if only we wouldn't lose track of 'Oumuamua in 2020.
Roscosmos/NASA/ESA/JAXA have to send a space-probe to find it again, which isn't easy, because of 'Oumuamua's non-gravitational velocity-component.
