Having Jesus physically present with them was all the disciples had ever known. But that is about to change. In John 14-17 Jesus is preparing them for this disorienting experience, and this includes the promise of the Holy Spirit. They won't be alone or abandoned. The Spirit will be with them and within them - Emmanuel, God with us.
