- Here's a detailed review of the mechanicals under the hood and body of the latest 2019 Toyota Corolla!
In this video we will take an in depth look at the engine, transmission, braking, electrical, cooling, safety, exhaust, suspension and emissions control systems to see how they work to make the car function and how easy it would be to perform repairs on if owned in the long term.
The Toyota Corolla has been a best seller and the latest generation based on the TNGA platform has brought a vast departure from previous generation in terms of mechanicals. The rear suspension is now independent, the CVT transmission now has a physical first gear and the engine makes use of new technologies such as exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR), electric water pump and thermostat, a cam driven vacuum pump for the brakes, direct and port injection and an electric VVTi-e actuator.

My first hand at reviewing a car!
What do you guys think? Would you like to see more reviews like this one? Any suggestions for improvement?
Thanks and enjoy!
speedkar99 I seriously can’t thank you enough for all the stuff you give us. Just.....thanks, dude
This is the kind of reviews we need!
Your review is THE MOST in depth of any that I have ever seen, very unique and no other can compare, especially with your knowledge and your hands-on top to bottom review. There are a few good new car reviewers out there, but it's even fewer who even bother to open the hood if at all... Most of them are just "sales", but you are the only one with the knowledge to back up what you are showing the viewers. 👍👍👏👏👏👌
Man! i would love to.
Very nice review, we expect reviews in used cars too, so we know pros and cons of that particular model's.
This type of review is exactly what was missing out here. Great idea.
Agreed! I want to do more...but getting someone to lend me thier car to mechanically analyse it would be difficult
Very interesting take on car review, please consider doing more of these
I sure will. What type of cars should I review?
speedkar99 Honda Civic
speedkar99 Camry
Is 300
@@speedkar99 17~19 Elantra Sport
😂😂😂, a number of car reviews who review number of cup holders.....i liked that one 😂😂😂😂😂😂
But hey it's true...cupholders, Android auto and sporty driving sums up the automotive press haha
@@speedkar99 thats very true, most reviews now adays major the minor...and 90% of them are biased...
Finally some really car review
Savage wasn’t it 😂😂
all the important features of 150k € car. dont forget quirky doorhandles
Clean hands, clean toothbrush, and without assistance from any of your family members; another great show nonetheless. Thank you so much speedkar99.
Yep quite a different take for me reviewing this one.
Good job! You’re the first youtuber That explained the engine bay so well! Bravo!
Thanks for the compliment. I haven't seen any videos like this so let's see where this goes!
This is the type of review that people like me would want to see. If you plan on owning a car for 15 to 20 years it would be great to know how hard the car will be to service. Being a guy who likes to do as much of the repairs and maintenance themselves this type of review is very important and would impact my buying decisions. Thanks.
Thanks. That's the thing...this type of review is for the mechanically minded ...not every Corolla driver cares haha
Keep going man you're awesome😍😍
Thanks for the encouragement
Meanwhile other reviewers show interiors and and low profile options. Great Job dude
Thanks very much!
Now that's a real car review for us mechanical types. Well done!
Thanks
Yep it's for gearheads alike
Doing mechanical reviews for cars is a fantastic idea, and you do it extremely well. Please make many more videos like this!
I sure will try! What other cars would you like to see?
@@speedkar99 : Well, if you're taking suggestions, I would love to see mechanical reviews of any of Honda's and Toyota's current-generation hybrids.
Excellent... Recently I have seen several car reviews, not even lifting the hood and just one sentence about the motor.
Agreed right!
This has got to be the most famous toothbrush in the world!
Perhaps it is. Little does my brother know...
@@speedkar99 Thanks for the videos, btw, keep it up, amazing stuff and really useful :D !
Best REAL car review on CZcams!
Thanks!
This mechanical review idea is GENIUS. Please do more of them!
I sure will thanks.
All cars should have in depth reviews like this. What a great video!
That would be awesome
WOW! The level of complexity explained simply is fantastic! Nice touch adding serviceability comments as well. Great job! Subscribed!
You are welcome!!
Best car review ever! Keep going!
Wow thanks for the feedback.
You are great at this
This is the kind of review I expect to see when I consider owning a car for that long.
You go into such specific details that no other reviewer even attempts.
Of course, know your audience, most people won't even know about any of this, but the engineers and car nerds will definitely appreciate it.
I learned more about this car in the span of 11 minutes then I would from any other source.
Keep up the good work!
You are welcome. While it pertains to longer term & technical buyers, this type of mechanical analysis are rare and we need more of it because cars aren't purchased for very long and only mechanics ever get to see this stuff
This was the best review I've seen (and I watch a LOT of them). Please do more like this!!!!!
Wow thanks!
It's only my first 😏
That's what I call a real "review". Awesome man keep it up.
Thanks! I'll try to work on more in the future.
Pls keep making this type of videos. This is a proper review.
Thank you
I will try to keep them coming
This is my kind of review. Such a lot of info in just 11mins. Good job!
I really loved how you showed everything behind the covers, please consider doing this kind of reviews for more newer cars
I sure will. Hopefully I'll be able to remove the covers though!
Like any other videos you've done, this is another great one.
It is so refreshing to have a review like this since not many people can do this, only those with technical expertise such as yourself can!
Besides being very educational, it will become a vital source of information for those who are thinking of buying this car, as well as something to look back on in the years to come from historical point of view - beneficial to much wider audiences than you think.
Thank you once again for another great video and keep up the good work.
Agreed, though since it's technical, the audience might be narrowed. How many Corolla drivers care about it's Mechanicals out there?
@@speedkar99 You're right, however most come to see your channel are technical minded (as it could be seen from all the comments that has been posted) and those could also advise others who are not that technically minded when want help to buy a Corolla.
I am really grateful for videos like this.
My disappointment for this engine, out of all plastics, the plastic cam cover. GM started this trend and Toyota kind of followed, which is a shame.
I currently run a 3S-FE Avensis which has covered over 410,000km without any overhaul. Everything metal, that's why it was possible.
Many thanks once again for series of great videos!
This is awesome! I hope you'll be able to make many more of these to come, a great change of pace from the normal kind of review.
Thank you
This is exactly what I want out of a car review. Thank you!
Awesome thanks
Holy mother of reviews. This is just what i have been missing all my life - a complete in depth review with the nitty gritty covered. Top job man. Keep it up.
Thanks! What other cars would you like to see?
speedkar99 to start a Honda Civic review and then a direct comparison between these two would be sweet.
Also may i suggest an improvement? Invest in a dedicated mic to clip to your shirt, it will make a major difference. Good luck!
speedkar99 BTW the sound of that GDI pump sounds quite unsettling.
Finally a channel for real car fans. Engineering Explained is cool too.
Sure is 🤓
Outstanding!!! As others have said, would love to see this type of review on older cars too, maybe even pointing out common failure items and how hard to repair. Thanks for doing this type of review. Really appreciate it. Subscribed.
That would be good.
I probably wouldn't want to deal with breaking plastic fasteners removing the covers though lol
I always look for engine diagrams with labeling online and here is an entire video explaining it all! Most either don't know enough to make a video like this or don't want to share it. Thank you for sharing!
This the kind of review lacking with most car reviewers these days , excellent job
Thanks , I agree
Really smart idea for a review!
Keep em coming, Thank you so much!
You are welcome! It's certainly different
DAMN! This was an awesome and unique review. I haven't seen mechanical reviews yet and I think this is way better to watch than those other reviews that are flooded on YT about "features". SavageGeese was the only one that actually looked under the hood and body but it was often a bit brief. Great channel too!
You hit every question and explained it even with those highlighted diagrams. I always wonder how some of these new cars are to work on and this has so much damn plastic. Looks overly complicated for a Toyota. Keep up this style of reviews, subscribed for more. I think you just tapped into in untouched market on YT. Good luck! Do more Toyotas please. Maybe a Tacoma
Thanks for the compliments and encouragement.
I've seen savagegeese reviews but they aren't as mechanically detailed
Seeing how stuff works together excites me so I decided to read up and try making a video to see if there are like minds out there...and they are ...alot!
Bought one of these brand new with manual transmission in 2018. Havent had a single issue! Absolutely love this car.
This is what I’m looking for when I buy the car! Pls do more
I don't work on car technicalities but rather cloud computing technicalities, so I did enjoy your video. I do love cars and this is a very detail review....Awesome job!!!
Thanks!
Finally..a pressure sensor to measure fuel pressure..i've been waiting 20yrs for Toyos to add that feature!
Best car review I've ever seen. I'm considering a 21 Corolla with the 2.0 and as another type of mechanic, this is incredibly helpful in understanding the systems. And I'm not even going to mention the Reach toothbrush! lol
Glad you found it helpful.
A true review without the cup holders 👍
I really enjoyed this different perspective on a new car review. If there is one thing I learned about the Corolla is that Toyota made almost every accessory electronically controlled: water pump, oil pump, power steering, valve timing, etc.
Thanks, I enjoy looking at cars from a mechanical perspective as well. Electrification is the future that we have to embrace.
Amazing video. Instant sub. Finally, aeons past, youtube recommends something good.
Thanks for subbing
This is the right kind of car review!!👍
Fantastic, in-depth, and educational! What a great job explaining all the features.
Thanks
Hopefully, i will see these kind of mechanical review videos in the future. Thank you a lot for this meaningful channel !
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to filming more too! Thanks
@@speedkar99 thank you, my teacher :D
Good video! This little car has a lot of tech! Keep going with these reviews.
It sure does have alot of technology compared the Corolla from say 10 years ago!
I have been watching car videos on CZcams for some time now. I have never seen an explanation of the mechanicals before. This is excellent. You have a new subscriber!
Thanks for subscribing!
Why do you normally watch reviews from, I'm curious? I watch some too
speedkar99 because I love cars!
Much needed fresh look at car reviews. U got urself a nice niche here 👍
I sure did. I really want to get back at it.... waiting for the lockdown to be eased
Ooooh! Ten thumbs up! Im about to buy one of these. This was so helpful! Thank you!
Glad it helped
You, Sir, have another new subscriber. Keep up the good work and I will be watching a lot more of these highly informative auromobile instruction videos.
Thanks for subbing. Video ideas welcome
Wow, thank you for this video, it's nice to know a little bit of mechanical side of a car.
This is the most detailed engine review I have ever seen! 😍 Please post more videos like this. I subscribed after 15 seconds.
... But these cars has so much to Break and go wrong. The average buyer will not be able to do 75% of maintenance on their car.
Thanks for the feedback!
I don't think it's fair to say everything that's new or made of plastic will break...only time will tell
Wow this is an excellent vehicle tech, geek review, I guess, fascinating! These Toyotas are surely fairly standardised for use on different vehicles/platforms like VWs have had. Nice work.
Yep it's all the same now on the TNGA platform
"Unlike most reviews, ..."
I was expecting you to disassemble the car.
Haha good one! I cannot afford that yet.
@@speedkar99 This's already the most in depth car review i've ever watched.
Thanks for making this video simple, thorough, and complete! :)
You are welcome
Everything is so well put together.
It's very well thought out yes
Graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree and while they did teach me fundamentals this is what I needed to supplement my studies. I worked on cars to pay my way through school, but nothing in the car community comes remotely to this. Thank you so much.
I've personally been trying to compare shaft diameters of various vehicles and study engine clearances and chamber sizes to simulate in ANSYS, but I havent found any blueprints. I guess to investigate what would justify engines or transmission types. Maybe you can do something about that?
I too am a mechanical engineer. We don't learn this stuff in school, so I learned by doing this type of stuff on the side. As far as finding blueprints...those are usually company secrets...the easiest way is to actually reverse engineer components and measure them yourself (I have a series of videos on teardowns).
so u finally got ur brother a new car after destroying all his stuff XD
Actually my brother got a new old car at the end of this video...a Supra!
@@speedkar99 THAT SUPRA COST MORE THEN THAT COROLLA

Me as a no mechanic i understand you very easy and i learn too much from you sir 😊👍🏼
well done , and well prepared, bit of a tech background or you have done allot of research on this car, kudos to you keep them coming
It sure did take a few weeks of reading up to get all the technical info!

I love this kind of mechanical reviews. Please please do more..
What types of cars would you like to see?
Great vid, will be really helpful for those planning to buy this car or even maybe for non mechanical savvy new owners wanting to do some diy on their car.
Agreed! It would probably be more useful 200,000km down the line when they do need work haha
Dude these are genuinely outstanding reviews. Thank you for doing this
Best car channel ever!
It's great, thanks for this, it really shows how elegantly simple Toyotas are
It sure does.
I would stay away from those cvt hell nah
Btw best car review i have seen in a while showing everything damn
Toyota makes great cvt's
Thanks, what more would you like to see?
They sure do, driving this thing around my neighborhood, it was difficult to tell there was a CVT under the hood. However I did feel the engagement of that physical first gear at launch.
Toyota's CVTs are great for normal family car for city driving especially on economy cars like Corolla, not for a Sporty sedan for a college kid like me
My family has a 2006 Toyota minivan with a 4 cylinder 2.0 engine and a CVT, it is nice ans smooth to drive in the city and highways but I don't prefer it on twisty roads or hills where you need to control real gears
My mother bought a new Toyota a couple years ago and the cvt didn’t last a year. She kept having to bring it in for service after getting it replaced. Eventually she traded that nightmare in
Great review . I wish every review was this focussed on the mechanical and engine aspects. Especially how to access parts for replacement...my 2004 Nissan 350z is horrible for any repairs...reliable but very difficult to get to anything
I've got alot of G35 teardown content on my channel which is similar to your Z, enjoy!
Absolutely amazing review! You go through everything that us gearheads really want to know about when looking at vehicles. I would love to hear more of your likes and dislikes after the rundown and your general opinion on what your reviewing.
Thanks I'll keep that in mind, though I tend to stay neutral
Really thorough explanation, really appreciate it
Great idea to do car reviews based on the mechanical components.
Please consider doing more.
Maybe the Honda civic?
😊👍
Yep you are not the first to suggest the new Civic for a review, I'll definitely consider it now!
Best car review by FAR! Fantastic job, sir!
That being said, I am deeply saddened by the trend of "electronically-controlled" electronics, plastic, stamped steel and brittle alloy engines designed to fall apart, fail and break down with normal use. It makes little sense to outright _own_ such an overcomplicated vehicle with so *many* possible fail points. As long as they continue to sell gas, oil and tires, I will continue to drive my 33 year old Suzuki Samurai past _loads_ of broken-down, more "modern" cars.
Thanks. You definitely have a traditional view on the automotive industry. Fuel efficiency and safety regulations are driving manufacturers to squeeze as much power, economy and weight out of thier vehicles so the "decontenting" you see is basically eating up any potential that the vehicle already had.
I second that. Ill be driving my 20 yearold camery indefinitely. I prefer a metal intake and metal valve covers. Heat plus plastic is a receipe for disaster.
@@Super6-Four EXactly my thoughts with my old Camry too.My hair literally stood on end watching this.Pity the poor suckers buying one of these in 20 years time.Mind you they'll probably only last 10 years max."Et tu Toyota".[Shakespeare's view]
I agree! My 1990 Corolla is a better car than a new one, and it only has 82k miles!
@Nombre Apellido I think I’ll always own a corolla. They are the best little cars ever made!
Great review ! I appreciate the pace , very informative and concise!!
Fully details review! I love it!
Thanks, I love this style of review too!
One of a kind of car review.
It sure is different than the rest. Thanks
After watching this explanation of the 2.0 and what seems like a complicated engine, I’d like to see you do a video of the old school 1.8 for a comparison.
Yeah I would too! I went with the 1.8 LE the hp doesn't matter to me. I prefer the simpler 1.8
So much technical info. THIS IS GREAT STUFF
It sure is highly technical! Thanks
@@speedkar99 more of this style is definitely welcome :)
Just subscribed. First vid I've seen doing this kind of comprehensive yet easy to understand review. Kudos to you sir! Hope you continue making vids like this.
Thanks. I sure hope to continue
Toyota sure is making a lot of improvements, unfortunately, in my opinion, along with the improvements also making it harder for the DIYs ... except for going back to the canister style oil filter.
Good thoughts, though having gone thru this Corolla in depth I don't think it'll be hard to service compared to Toyota's transverse V6 vehicles.
Other than the weird need for an air compressor + Toyota Techstream (which I have both - hint - check ebay for the TSS software), everything else seems pretty DIY friendly. Last year I had to press out my wife's 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid wheel bearing, which was not that simple. This Thanksgiving I'll need to change the timing belt next (severely overdue at 173k miles!)
speedkar99, oh yea, I have a 2016 Highlander 3.5L V6, it will be fun to change the back 3 spark plugs and not looking forward to the day to change its ATF and filter. I watch one of your knock sensors replacement videos on a Lexus... if that day ever comes, I will just junk the HL. LOL
True. Outside of suspension, brakes, oil change and tune up. Diy is screwed.
@@OliverKoolO uh, I think you can change or inflate tires and change air filters..., No? 🤔😀
What do you mean by "tune up"? Maybe replacing spark plugs and cleaning the mass air flow sensor? I mean there haven't been any distributor caps, rotors or timing adjustments or valve adjustments for a long long time.
camshaft driven fuel pump? Awesome technology, same as my KE30 3K engine corolla. complete and thorough mechanical review, subscribe immediately
Yep. Lots of direct injected cars are using that now.
Brilliant narration combined with perfect filming. That deserves *****.
Holy crap! I didn't think I would EVER see a vehicle this easy to maintain ever again!
I'm surprised, a car with the hood up without crappy plastic shrouds covering everything
It's a Corolla...they had to cut the plastic somewhere
The crappy plastic is now part of the drivetrain
The 1.8 looks way less cluttered than this 2.0
@@pryme2013 could be coz it has both port and direct injection, and doesn’t have that crappy plastic cover
@@jessef9190 1.8 has no cover
I plan on buying a new Corolla Hatchback in a few months. This review is really awesome! I'm very grateful that you took the time to do it. By far the best Corolla review, and the only one that really matters as far as I'm concerned. I do not care about infotainment systems, or Apple Carplay, or any other toys. All I care about is whether the car is inexpensive to own and maintain.
I'm glad this helps!
Excellent video! Thank you for this information. This type of videos is so needed.
You are welcome. I look forward in making more when I get my hands on more cars. Thanks
Awesome mechanical reviews 👍
Thank you
This is a great review, perhaps most other reviewers only know how to count cup holders. Viewers do not learn anything new about carrs from other reviews
Agreed
A very good review. You should mention pros and cons. If any.
Ahmed Magdy Elmonshed this video is informative enough where it’s left for the viewer to decide
I tried to mention things I liked and disliked in the video without coming across as biased. (yay for bolt on bearings and nay for plastic valve covers and CVT service)
The video is good enough for it self. Out of its greatness it Played like in seconds not minutes. Wished to have a conclusion at end.
Excellent job.
I would love to see more mechanical reviews!!!! I love that Toyota is one of the few automakers investing in direct and port injection (D-4S)
Researchers proved the direct/port injection reduced Pm 2.5 measured fine particulate soot emissions about 10 times what they were when only direct is used. So its 10 times cleaner burning than everyone else's cars out there today
A type of review I never expected to see or even thought of.
But now I see one, it is pretty cool to know the mechanical aspects of a new car.
Random question:
How'd you'll feel if a company decides to donate a brand new car, for the sole purpose for you to tear it apart thoroughly?
Yep I'm trying something different...a more technical review.
That would be awesome if I could get a car to tear down! But which car company would ever give me that...haha
Not at all built for the ease of maintenance or repair... Yep it's just getting worse.
But your videos continue to improve! Thanks for this brilliant review! I'd watch your mechanical review over any salesman review any day.
I'm glad you appreciate my work!
To me this vehicle didn't seem hard to work on...wait until you get to a Toyota V6
The Mitsubishi Mirage with the 5 speed seems a lil more diy friendly. They also have 100,000 mile warranty and costs way less. Not my 1st choice, but hey, if the Corolla/Civic are getting this complicated, then maybe its time to find a more practical kinda car.
This was so awesome to see!!! No one does this with new cars!!!
Yep! That's probably because manufacturers don't want you to see all this
Awesome concept! More of this, please! 😃
I sure hope to do more! Thanks
this question may seem stupid but..
..is it still the legendary toyota build quality?
No, all cars are almost the same now
@@whitelulule well I think it's something like this, toyota doesn't really do a product save for maybe the 4 runner and land cruiser where everything is good on the car, yes toyota does some things good, and some things have issues, even gm does some things good. It's kind of like take your pick
love your videos man. u should try an externa mic, those changes in volumen level are weird
Thanks for your feedback, I will consider improving my audio, as it hasn't been one of my strongest points
