- Over a century ago, Britain’s piano manufacturers used to be industrial giants, churning out thousands of instruments every year. But now only one factory remains. Adam Cox runs Cavendish Pianos in Yorkshire to keep this traditional art from disappearing completely.

How The UK’s Last Piano Factory Keeps A Centuries-Old Industry Alive | Still Standing
I am one of the few technicians, tuners and dealers still working. Can't tell you how much I love the piano. It is a dying art. Wish these guys all the luck.
Edit: Wow! Thanks for all the likes!
Can you identify pianos just by the sound?
Is there a noticable difference between different manufacturers?
@@grzegorzswist they are all totally different. Each piano is unique, regardless of the manufacturer.
I wish somebody would teach me the ways of the craft😩 I love music and play a few instruments myself but I was always more interested in how they were made rather than how they play. Maybe one day🤞🏾
@@zacwoods go ask a piano tuners guild member. They can help.
I can make a piano.
As a pianist, I am happy to see Cavendish Pianos keeping the craft alive, but I don't believe they are the UK last piano manufacturers there is John Broadwood and Sons, centuries old company who made pianos for Mozart and Beethoven, they have a Royal Warrant and still make pianos in the UK to the best of my knowledge.
I was also curious and looked it up. Seems like it's the only company that makes "pianos still wholly built in the United Kingdom". From Wikipedia...
@@jjk4891 they're the same quality ,ones just selling a Locally built product which might make it more expensive
I'll need to check, but I believe Broadwood has made their last analogue piano and now concentrates on the digital version. Like the Roland product.
Did Steinway and sons steal his name
I think they mean, piano makers who are originally from the UK . Steinway and sons are actually from Seseen, Germany. They expanded their business to New York, Hamburg and the UK later on.
AS A YORKSHIREMAN I wish you the greatest success, keep at it, the world IS changing and people are starting to appreciate quality over the disposable and cheap...
Disposable and cheap? Luxury! When I was a lad, we were lucky to have anything that was disposable or cheap.
@@jaredspencer3304
It's changing though because EVERYTHING is too cheap now and breaks almost immediately. People are paying hard-earned money to get the best they're able to and these days, it's not worth the materials it's made out of. I feel like that's why I a lot of people are shying away from super cheap, disposable garbage.
@@ElysetheEevee Sorry for the confusion, I was making a joke from The Four Yorkshiremen sketch from Monty Python.
I remember when I bought my piano about 20 years ago, just a nice upright with a great tone. I ended up getting a used piano, bc the man selling very expensive new ones told me that the used one he had was much better built than the new Asian imports he sold. He said that their soundboards weren’t solid wood, but were sheets of plywood glued together, making the sound “ugly.” He also said that nearly all new upright pianos have plastic rods attached to the hammers, not wooden rods, so the flexibility of the hammers was completely different and affected the way the hammers responded to the pressure of the keys. So my used, 100% wood piano (which was cheaper than the new ones by $10,000) still sits in our living room, and I’ve been incredibly happy with it. I’m not sure how that place stayed open, but I surely appreciated the salesman’s honesty!
I've been a technician for almost 50 yrs now and fear the loss of maybe the finest instrument ever. AMAZED at how young this shop's workers are - HOORAY FOR YOU ADAM COX!!!! You can buy a cheap one from Taiwan or China or Korea but there's NOTHING like one where craftsmanship is the #1 thing. That's why just saying names like Steinway and you think of quality first. Down the road I pray we also hear much more of Cavendish. WELL DONE GENTLEMEN!!! STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN!
Respect for amazing work and devotion to this unique craft!

I have been playing piano since I was 3 I am no 17. Let me tell you there is a huge difference in sound between a cheap China mad piano and hand made piano. This is something I really appreciate
Unfortunately people always want cheaper ones, especially the new digital Yamaha is so good that most are happy with them
@@ps3301 we can't blame them
Ironically, the parts that you see in this "made in the UK" piano is from... *drumroll* China.
I started playing when I was 8 since my parents didn’t want me to become a musician and forced me to wait a bit.
When my music teacher told my parents that I have a talent and deserved to play on a real piano, we went to the piano restorer in town to choose an instrument. I picked one out that has a louder sound and somewhat heavier keys compared to grand pianos, which makes my arms hurt when I play very fast for half an hour XD
It cost us 3000 CHF but it was well worth it

Cavendish is not that last factory in the UK, there are others, including Steinway's in London and you can't forget the rebuild and restoration workshops all over the country
Steinways are made in New York or Hamburg. They only have a showroom in London. However, I thought Broadwood was still making pianos unless they have recently gone bust.
@@karldelavigne8134 Broadwood are still working. They recently moved to North Yorkshire. I was shocked a company so rich in history was literally on my doorstep. I believe the company has changed hands a few times.
I went to Steinway's workshops in London 5 years ago, is it just a repair shop now?
@@gentlegiant171 As far as I know, they have never made pianos in London, but they must do repair and assembly work. Interesting to find out.
@@gentlegiant171 no Karl is just another idiot that bought into this propaganda puff piece. They’re still making them fine.

Your story reminds me of the composer Handel, he also secretly play piano as his dad don't like music
Its a beautiful thing to follow your heart ... It shows in the quality of the pianos you create. Stay strong and teach as many as you can your craft. Loved this video. Thank you for your time and sharing your art. It was just food for my heart.
Even in the face of possible bankruptcy, it still exposes the piano's negative points, such as the fact that it deteriorates over time.
This guy has my respect and sympathy. I cheer for him
The piano may degenerate over time, what doesn't. However, it's a very long process and I regularly tune pianos that are over 100 years old and they still sound a play very well. The pianos longevity is far more of a problem for manufacturers than its decline. Why pay thousands for a new one, when you can buy a perfectly good old one for a comparatively small amount ?
What a genuinely lovely video. Thank you for producing.
Love them. Priceless craftsmanship.
I never could play the piano but I appreciate the craftmanship of making it and the sounds it produces. Hopefully I'll be able to play one day and own a grand piano
I have warm fuzzies to hear all the sounds of my earliest memories being a piano tuners and repairer's daughter. Dad too was a true artisan and did everything, including concert tuning, by ear and hand.
I hope yamaha isn’t getting thrown into the “cheap foreign manufacturing “ jab
And Steinway
All products in an English documentary from a non-English speaking country are "cheap foreign imports" regardless of their quality.
I doubt Yamaha or Kawai will have lower quality, it is a Japanese cultural value to have reliable, well built products, like Toyota and Honda. Other Asian pianos, especially those manufactured in China aren’t super good quality for the most part
They have the economies of scale on their side. Tbh their quality is superb and the CFX is arguably better than Steinway. Kawai too especially the Shigeru Kawai series.
@@tohahawlader671 yeah, and I hate it. I mean, if you can't compete with cheaper and "better" Competitor's product then just shut up, no need to bitching around about your hand build authentic mesmerizing top quality crafted piano.

Was in the trade for sixty odd years DANEMANE ZENDER AMONGST OTHERS back in the early sixties none of the big company’s invested in the future ,they never saw the threat coming from abroad ,just too complaicent,in fact one firm I worked for even sent piano parts to firms in china ,spinning yarns like we’ve brought some of your pianos and arrived damaged ,could you send us a new. Frame or the action is beyond repair can you send us a new one ,2 years later at the Frankfurt exhibition there was some very familiar looking pianos on display, they soon found a way mass producing pianos !
1:58 "A piano that is made slowly will be a better piano that is made fast"
I would only believe with a blind test.
May god give adam a long life to keep alive that piano tradition.
A vexed question. As an occasional player, I'd far prefer say, a used Marshall & Rose or Broadwood or Bechstein or Pleyel or Kawai to a new Jade(ed) Dragon or Lovely Hippopotamus or Whistling Changdoo instrument from an Asian sweat shop. Spend a bit of money renovating a tried-and-true and it's good to go for another 75 years.
If I was buying a piano I would buy a Cavendish.
If
I'd get Bosendorfer.
I would love to visit here asap !
I had a schoolmate who's mom was an auctioneer, and I once saw a self playing piano sell for 32 USD. It was from the late 1800s and the only problem was that it needed a tuning and maybe a repainting

Well, all big piano companies still make their pianos by hand. They are just not from the UK but Germany, Austria, Japan, Estonia, Italy.
This is incredible.... I'm in awe of this craft
4:39. It takes about 3 months to finish a piano that’s why they only make about 50 pianos a year (that’s a 150 month year btw)
Lol
They are making several pianos at the same time...
Not very bright are you... And your Math is about as good as your knowlege of production. They are working on several pianos at the same time, though each one will be at a different stage of manufacture. Because something is hand-made does not mean only one pair of hands working.
The sound when they use the basher machine sounds exactly like when I try to play the piano.

Hello from Nicholas Bryan, piano tuner in Brazil. I am delighted to learn about the existence of Cavendish Pianos. I thought that was it with WMC having shut down. I did the LCF course in London in the early 1990s. I don't suppose there's any chance of offering your pianos down here in the woods ? Or should I say ashes. Yamaha are quite prominent here in Brazil, Steinway, Boston & Essex and even Fazioli. Where do you get your tools ? I'm having bad luck with F&N tuning heads. I had begun teaching tuning before the pandemic and have had new tuning heads ordered for my students and myself and they seem much more"wobbly" on the pin than the old ones. Have you had the same problem with new Steinway pattern tuning heads ? Best regards. Nicholas, Campinas SP Brazil
