    I was proud of the men I worked with when I was shaft mining doing this exact work. I also worked in Thompson and Leaf Rapids. You had each others backs. Hard , dirty ,dangerous work but I loved it.

    I was a shaft fitter at the Whitemoor mine in Yorkshire UK and this video reminded me of the barbaric work conditions we endured at 1 kilometre deep drill blast muck out wire the walls and concrete every 60 metres. It paid me well though

    Old school hard work way of mining a shaft.
    Hope these boys are all still healthy and well 👍
    Much better and safer ways to do it now, thankfully.

    Definitely in the top nastiest jobs ever, 11 hours to drill and load so the blast can occur before the cross shift comes down. Zero comfort, cold wet nasty and hard.

    • @blaker007705
      @blaker007705  Před 10 měsíci

      Actually we took two six foot benches a shift. So we drilled and blasted twice and mucked out twice per shift….each drill and blast cycle took about two hours, and it would take about two hours to muck out each time. We worked 8 hour shifts.
      We got two benches a shift.

    Sitting on the pnuematic boring machine would cause serious internal health problems after a year or so. The noise from those machines was also horrific leading to tinnitus and deafness. All in all, the money was outstanding but the cost was higher with poor health as one got older.

    I'm in school to learn mining , one of our teacher talked to us about a guy that was working on sinking a shaft he was sitting on his plugger, the iron broke and he fell right on he, got implaled.
    He survived though, but now he has a pouch on his side since the back hole don't work anymore.

    • @blaker007705
      @blaker007705  Před 10 měsíci

      Yes drill steel will break and it’s led to some horrible accidents. I was at a mine in northern Ontario working as a cage tender. One night the drift crew leader called me and said a guy on his crew was bleeding pretty bad, so I jumped on the cage and went to pick them up. The fella that was hurt was holding the end of an 8 foot steel to help his partner caller a hole with his jack leg drill. The steel broke off about 2 feet from the chuck and it drove into the guys head who was helping him.
      His head had a nasty hole in it and he was bleeding bad, we held him upright in the cage all the way to surface. Took him out in an ambulance. He had lost six pints of blood by the time he got to the hospital. He pulled through ok, took a week off and came back to work.

      Air Hammer-Drills impart a lot of vibration to the body ; BUT if you really want HARD Drilling , try doing it ''Single Jack'' where you hold the drill steel in one hand and strike it with a 4 pound Sledge in the other . I've sunk a couple of Shafts and cut many a Drift that way . Now THAT'S hard work ! -- < Doc , Miner for 50 years > .
