As a Mexican, there is a lot of racism in my country against darker-skinned people. Over here it's often considered negative to be darker skinned, and most darker skinned people are portrayed as poor, ignorant, criminals, etc. The word "prieto" is often used to refer to darker skinned people, and I notice that in our media, such as movies, novelas, tv shows, advertisements, etc., most mexicans are portrayed as white, no matter the region. Mexico has a lot of genetic and cultural diversity, so it is true that a lot of Northern Mexicans are white, but this is not true in the south and most of Central Mexico. People from Chiapas, Oaxaca, Michoacan, Yucatan, and southern states are made fun of, and "Chiapaneco", "Oaxaco", are used as insults, due to southern states being portrayed as poor. I've also noticed in latin-american online communities, being darker-skinned is negative. Peruvians are often made fun of for being dark-skinned and "ugly", and there's a lot of racism.

As a Brazilian whose ancestors immigrated from Italy in 1890, I believe racial relations in Brazil are even more complicated.
Those European (and Japanese) immigrants were unaware of their "privileged" status. They were scammed into coming here and had to face many hardships in a country with no infrastructure. As a result, when they got jobs, bought land, or started their own businesses, they firmly believed that everything was on their own merits, with no outside assistance. As the majority of them rose through the ranks of the middle and upper classes in the decades that followed, they contributed to the perceived notion that Afro-Brazilians were still poor because they were "lazy," "undisciplined," or had questionable morals.
It didn't help that the few successful Black Brazilians married white women and had light-skinned children. After all, they were no long "black" - they were now "black with a white soul". Having a white spouse is still seen as a status symbol among most Black Brazilians. I can't think of a single world-famous Black Brazilian soccer player whose wife has darker skin than them - and the majority of their wives are blonde models of Italian or German ancestry.
These things have become so naturalized that most Brazilians only realize there is something wrong with their society when they move to Europe or the United States and have to interact with the locals.
Until the early 2000s, blackface was still a common sight in Brazilian comedy shows. Even today, the majority of telenovela actors and actresses are white or light-skinned. The first Black protagonist arrived in 2004 (!) - and she still worked with a white partner. In the 1970s, we even made a historical telenovela about slavery with a White protagonist! And it's not that the Brazilian public rejects Black people on television. "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "My Wife and Kids," and "Everybody Hates Chris" are the most successful American sitcoms in the country. Even after that, there is still no local show (that I am aware of) with a Black family as the main protagonists.

Now mixing means you're trying to erase a pure race? This lady has been discriminated and has taken US discrimination and transported that reality to Hispanic America. I'm so glad this video was made. More awareness needs to be brought out about this. When I lived in Miami, I witnessed it with my own two eyes, and this is even an American city that is heavily filled with Hispanics. Hell, I never experienced the level of racism I dealt with in Miami, anywhere else in America. Mind you, I grew up in Virginia, deep south of VA even. While in that city, I would never forget one of my coworkers who REPEATEDLY had to defend her national identity. I lost count of how many times I saw this lady being questioned whether she is really from Argentina. The day she told me about the experiences of her family living in Argentina, honestly, it took everything in me not to cry. Mind you, my coworker is heavily mixed; she is extremely racially ambiguous. You wouldn't even think she was black until she says it, but, she and her family were still not "Argentina" enough. Also, her identifying as Afro-Latino seems to increase the lack of acceptance of her national identity. Honestly, it was pathetic repeatedly watching her experience this, and shamefully it occurred in an American city, now, imagine how it is in her home country.
Sadly, she was not the only one. I knew a guy that I thought for a whole year was half Trini/half black American because that's what he told me. It wasn't until the day he invited me to a family gathering that I learned the truth about his actual real identity. He was from Latin America, specifically Colombia. His cousin told me their actual origin because I noticed at their gathering, his entire family was speaking Spanish, some could not even speak English thus, something wasn't clicking, so I asked. My friend ended up confessing that the reason he self-identify as Trini/black American mixed is because of the racism he experienced at the hands of white Colombians and supposedly, that is a common thing in Colombia. Growing up in Colombia felt like hell to him for something he couldn't change. When their family moved to America, he quickly picked up a new identity. According to him, he felt more accepted when he began identifying as a non-Latino than when he identified as one. He never went to details about what exactly he experienced in Colombia but, for him to completely disassociate himself from his nationality, makes you question how bad is it for black people there. Honestly, if I write all I saw, and the stories the Afro-latinos I met told me, it literally will turn into an essay. I am so glad this video was made and more like it needs to be made. More awareness should be brought to what Afro-Latinos experience, in my opinion.

We are mestizos, embracing our culture with pride. We celebrate our mixed heritage, which is distinctly Latino or Hispanic. As a Peruvian of mixed descent, I find kinship with both a white Argentinean or Spaniard and a mulatto or black Dominican or Colombian. Our identity is rooted first in being Hispanic or Latino, transcending racial distinctions. What truly matters are our language, culture, and traditions. Whether it's Dominican or Uruguayan customs, they resonate with those of Peru or Mexico, despite each country's unique aspects. Above all, we identify as Hispanic. This inclusivity is why black or mulatto individuals also feel a connection to Latino or Hispanic heritage.
Regrettably, the situation differs in Anglophone countries. Due to historical segregation, black US Americans may not feel the same connection with Indigenous Canadians or white Australians.

This is oddly similar when you talk about India, China and other Asian nations, albeit these people are more severe. There was an infamous anti-African unrest in China during 1980s, and Chinese still have quotes about Africans as Black monsters. The same situation in Thailand as well, when Thai entrepreneurs frequently made posters about "whiting" blacks. Such discrimination also exists in Vietnam and Taiwan, where the use "black" is to point something nasty. Treatment against Africans are pretty bad in Japan, South Korea as well as India (in India there are a lot of derogatory terms on Blacks). Even going as far as Iran, the Iranians are very hostile when thinking about the Black Africans. So yeah, Latin America's bad treatment on Africans is well-known, but it is nothing to compare with Asia.

Please compare the Jim Crow Laws to those of Latina America......Where would you like to have lived, or live today? A common mistake is to confuse Spanish and Portuguese colonists, who also had slavery, with English colonists. The first were Catholics, where the Pope declared Africans and Natives humans, with human rights. No such thing occurred in the British colonies...no Pope, and the protestant clergy never stuck up for the non-Europeans in this degree. Please do genetic research of Latin America before you come to conclusions. Why was there no civil wars in Latin America to emancipate Africans, like there was in the USA? Projecting US historical problems of race into Latin America is misguided a flat out wrong.

This is a topic for Latin Americans who live in those countries to discuss, not for someone from the US who doesn’t experience and live there to talk about.
We don’t see things the same as people do in the US, because of the world view most americans live by.

La verdad es que es un tema demasiado incomodo pero es verdad tristemente, historicamente la gente afrolatina y la gente indigena han sufrido de la peor discriminacion posible por gobiernos que le dieron prioridad a cosas y gente europea.

@@ramoncastaneda8432 This was created by a black american woman, using the american narratives, we latinos of the PRESENT don't care what color you are, we don't create discriminatory policies in favor of any nrace nowadays, if blacks are poor, well browns and white in the same area or different area are poor too, it's an general issue, not a racial issue, this idea about racism applies to those particular events, trying to say we are racist NOW becaue they are poor, have you seens our gettos, different colors, not just black, this american ideas are pure bs.
We mix race prefer to be white because everyone tell us on TV they have the money, show me adds with black people with money and we will want to be black insead, we are poor, not racist. This idea that whte people are rich comes from the USA, you don't promote rich blacks, educated blacks, black businessmen, you only portray them as gangsters rappers and we hate gangs, you are the ones ruining your own image, if you black people had more than just gangsters rappers as your successful man, we will accept your culture as superior, but American news and as such our news only show black man commiting crimes.
You blacks don't look up to black nerds, any kid who wants to have good grades in school you call them whitewashing, you promote rappers with criminal records and who are killing your own black people and singing about those killings, why should we want to be like you?
Our real problems are gangs and gang violence, people joining them, governments accepting their bs and to make matters worst, a lack of a culture of education, we are look down upon as latinos, no matter the race because we are not develop, because we are not proffesional, because we allow a few gangsters to terrorize us, when we are the mayority. I'm a mix race woman and I lived until I turned 18 y/o in the worst community in El Salvador, mix race, black and white, all of us were living a sh*tty life, it is not the skin color, nowadays it is gang culture and low-education what really set us back and what is really distroying us, don't try to impose on us your critical race theory sh*t in Latin America.
Stop trying to make us hate each other because of our skin color, we latinos of today are not racist, white people of the past were racist, not us, you don't need to blame everything on skin color, even less base all your arguments in something white people of hundreds of years ago did, they and their racism are dead since centuries ago.
