Watch This BEFORE You Add New Chickens To Your Existing Flock! | Pecking Order?

- How to add new chickens to existing flock? We moved our new spring chicks into the big coop with our old flock this week. There are a few precautions you will want to take when introducing two flocks together for the first time. Naturally, the old flock will try to establish dominance in the pecking order by pecking at the younger chicks. So it is best to wait to introduce the new chicks to the old flock until the chicks are big enough to be able to fend for themselves. And it is best to introduce several new chicks into the flock at a time. It would never be a good idea to bring in a single new chick into an old flock. The single new chick would get picked on badly as it is vastly outnumbered. Our new chicks have bonded well with the old flock after just a couple days together!

That's a great idea! Thanks! The ramps in and out of the chicken run have really helped keep the dogs out of the run and the coop. It takes the chickens a few days to all figure out that the door at the top of the ramp is open and they can get out. But after a few days they all figure it out and go in and out freely throughout the day!
Day 3 and mine are STILL being sooo mean to eachother. Old flock was 7, we added 6 and they are ruthless
I live in suburbs but I have 2 Pyrenees and 10 chickens, I love letting them all out and watching everyone enjoy the backyard and my garden.

Awesome video!! I always get nervous when introducing new chicks to the flock mainly because of hay hay(our oldest hen) About 2 years ago she ended up killing another one of our hens, but she always ends up getting along with the new chickens after a couple of days!

We have had an existing flock of Australorps (hens and 2 roos) and decided to add some new hens to the flock - 2 Dark Brahmas, 1 Golden Lace Wyandotte, 5 brahma/EE mix hens...we also have a run with some young 8 week old Narragansett Turkeys...so the new group went in with the turkey kids...a wire fence separates the two runs...the youngest of the new hen group are about 8 weeks old...others are a bit older...thinking if we have them next door to each other for a few days, maybe the transition will be easier? The Turkeys are not moving in with the hens...:) Also, I would love to know any info you can pass on to how to train LGDs and fowl...we have a young Mareema/ASD mix that is 5 months old.
Hey Ginger! Thanks for watching! Yes I think having them exposed to each other through the fence for a week or so should ease the transition.
As for training LSD with chickens and other fowl, I’d say it’s similar. You want to exposed them to the fowl young, through the coop fencing, and then work in some supervised training times where you can be intentional about correcting any stalking behavior you witness. New subscriber, hit the bell notification, and shared with my wife and a sister who also has chickens. I really enjoyed your video. I have 17 Barred Rocks - 2 roosters and 15 hens. The roosters and 5 of the hens are 21 weeks and 10 new hens are 7 weeks old. I plan on integrating them into the older flock at 10 - 12 weeks. Your video certainly helped. At this time, the new hens are in a coup to themselves, but I free-range the older ones every day. They return to their own coup at sunset. Whether the new chickens go to their current coup or to the older chicken's coup, isn't too important to me now. (That may change if I find out there is an advantage to having them all in one coup for the night. Thoughts?) They are all within sight of each other and have been for a few weeks. Would you suggest that, since they have been around each other, but separated, when I introduce them, I do it in their free-range area? I like the idea of having watermelon available, since they all love it. Anyway, thanks for the video and I'll go back and review previous ones.

Isn't Mae the cutest?! No we don't have a rooster. Just a bunch of hens 😁 The heat and humidity has been terrible this summer. The dogs have been laying in the shade most of the day and getting in their water troughs to cool down. We just have to refill their water troughs almost every day!
@@WillowRidgeAcres I wish Rowdy would get in his trough ! I brushed enough hair from him to make a small dog! Ive had several suggestions about shaving him … guess they don’t realize that he can sunburn! His coat protects him winter and summer .

Possibly a weird question, I'm watching your video and of the new chicks when you show them you have a white and black one that comes out first can you tell me the breed of that one? We hatched and we have one that looks just like that and our local chick people can't figure it out
Sure! The chick with the mostly white body and the black feathers around it's head/neck is a Columbian Wyandotte.

Is 5 chicks enough to add to a flock of 9 this spring?
Yes 5 chicks should be enough as long as you wait until the chicks are grown enough to fend for themselves before introducing them to the original flock
I tried this and one hen almost got killed so had to remove them.

I had no idea that chickens liked watermelon 🍉.
Oh they love it! We feed them other vegetable and fruit scraps too. There is a short list of things they shouldn’t eat.
