Not that it maters to this old video, but I just completed the Colorado trail and used Carrier provided plastic bags both ways without any damage. I would say anything that is a direct flight is safe to send with carrier provided bags. secure all buckles put trekking poles inside with tent stakes and wrap should straps and snug down all straps and pockets prior to bagging. Worked like a charm for me.
Actually, my SIL went on a business trip. He flew with a carry on. They made him gate check it. He got to his destination and they lost his bag. He had to go to the only store open at 10 pm (Walmart) to buy some work appropriate clothes for his 7 am meeting.
Great vid! Taking your advice this Summer and getting the duffel. 26.00 to protect a ton of money spent on gear is worth it.. I will give the bag to a random family in the airport as a gift, lol.. 26.00 well spent
I use Dollar Store laundry bags as an outer "shell". I always take 4 with me -super light- so if one gets wrecked I have a spare as well as a "carry on bag" if I buy stuff while away.
As someone who travels all too frequently, if you gate check it comes out with the rest of the luggage at baggage claim usually. Only tiny planes where all larger caryons get gate checked come back out on jet bridge.
Yup. If you want to avoid the conveyor belt your only real option is to book special luggage for your bag ahead of time.
IKEA 80L bag is $6 on Amazon. Comes with handles and shoulder straps, 7oz. Much tougher than compactor bag. What is one to do with a $100 bag? Carry on the trail? $6 IKEA is disposable for a thru-hike and cache for a loop-hike (as Otzfin notes). Amazon ships another one to destination for thru-hikers?
This is such a good advice! thanks
On my trips to India and China, I bought several "cheap-ass" laundry bags at the dollar store. I put the backpack in one bag then that in a second bag.. Before I go I place a smart phone (BLU is a nice cheap on with 2 sims for local use) set to turn off at X-o'clock (just before departure) and to reawaken at Y-o'clock (about arrival time) [phone not on during flight so no worries plane wise and no worries battery wise) I can track the bagged phone with my daily carry phone (also a BLU -I just like them and they are cheap-like-borscht) Never lost a bag yet although I almost did on a trip to india.. I just called the bag and found out that instead of putting on the carousel they had hand delivered it to a "resting spot" near by -crisis averted. China x-rays everything so I had to make sure I didn't tie too strange a knot.. which gets "sealed" by the baggage tags. I have used markers to write in the outside of the bag with thew start and destination written on them... as I use multiple bags I put the appropriate bag on the outside each leg Also they are usually a hideous colour of green or blue so they are easy to spot Double bagging keeps and strange edges or corners from working their way out (or in) and upon arrival, I simply stow the bags in a pocket somewhere (they fold down to almost nothing) I always carry a few spares both because of the labeling and because you never know what you might pick up in your travels (I China it was 2 bathrobes from the last hotel) I hope this helps someone somewhere somehow some time.
Thank you for the idea!!! save me a lot of trouble.
Great advice. The luggage goons can be particularly stringent and unpredictable in Europe.
Great advice. Thanks.
Hey Bungzy, love your videos. You said to start out by getting a small bag containing a change of clothes, wash kit as well as items you’re not allowed to carry on a plane such as knife, scissor, tent stakes, etc. I’m confused as to why the change of clothes and wash kit should be in a small bag with these other non carry on items. What am I missing here?
Great advice! Trekking poles, tent stakes, stoves that have been used and even that tiny Swiss Army knife will not make through TSA as carry on luggage. You may have mentioned it, if so, my apologies👍🏼love your quick a informative reviews.
Thank you!
Excellent video
Hey Bungzy please do a review on the zero pack. Thanks
Don't give up your bag! Every time I've let an airline take my bag and put it below the plane it has been lost. I vacation in Europe almost every year and have had multiple trips ruined by lost luggage. I'll never do it again.
BTW, my wife had her bag checked at the gate for a trip to Croatia and they lost that too. Stand your ground and take your bag on the plane with you.
How? Which size can go on the plane, and which size , would you say is too big?
@@amerstain I usually fly with a SWD Long Haul 35L but my wife has carried on her Zpacks Arc Scout which I believe is a 45L or 50L with no problems. I try and keep everything on the inside so there's less stuff to get caught on stuff when I toss it overhead.
@@Motorep146 aha. I'm thinking about getting and 48l, so this was very useful. Thanks a lot! (There is no possibility A 60l would be allowed at all, right?)
@@amerstain I've seen some huge backpacks that were brought on board that were nowhere close to the allowed size. It's just luck of the draw whether you get hassled or not. I know my luck wouldn't be good so I try and follow the rules. I just had an Atom Packs Atom 30L built for European hut hikes and it's not much bigger than a day pack. I don't see anyone saying anything about that one for sure. I don't carry much when doing the Tour de Mont Blanc or Haute Route so it's perfect for hikes like that.
Hello there friend I just wanna ask a 21inch high backpack is ok in the airport with no worries?
Yes that’s a nice pretty bag from a cool back packing company with likely an expensive back pack on the inside. Kind of screams steal me don’t you think? Something cheap but strong like an IKEA bag or a $20 duffel off Amazon might be a better choice. I have a pricey osprey bag. I’m not going to put an osprey over bag on it. Some anonymous bag/duffel for me.
I've used an Army surplus duffel - cheap, tough canvas, and maybe gets a little more respect.
What about the medium Alice pack ? Will I have any problems at the airport ?
Do you think a 50liter pack that weighs 20lbs will be a issue as a carry on?
I've flown 100s of times. Lost luggage is actually rare as is bag damage.... just don't have straps hang out! AND American at least is sending gate checked bags to normal pickup on arriva... happened in Boston. Dallas and Cinn.
So, once you arrive at your destination, what do you do with the duffle and the bag you checked? Surely you don’t want to drag that extra weight on the trail, and your Arc’teryx bag is hardly disposable. Could you mail drop it?
Consider this: All non-carry on items or items that could be confiscated (trekking poles, scissors, knives, pack stay or stay(s) etc. Priority Mail ahead to the folks that are giving you a ride from the airport. Carry on your now more compressible pack with other pack items you would need for however many nights before hitting the stores for fuel and food prior to the trail. No duffle bag required as you are keeper of your own pack as you place it carefully into the overhead bin above your seat. No checked bag fee required.
In my experience, it's far more common for gate checked bags to be offloaded with the regular luggage. You're far, FAR better off just paying the extra fee to check your bag as special luggage - they have separate drop-off and pick-up points for luggage that can't go on the conveyor belt and shouldn't be tossed around the way regular luggage is. This is NOT the same thing as sticking a "fragile" sticker on your bag - you book special luggage in advance and check it in at a separate location, not the regular check-in counter.
Hi, Does the 40 liters quechua bag from decathlon backpack is allow in flight?
So if I understand right, i have to check in all the metal stuff in a separate bag ?
Not sure how that works.. if they stop you at the security check point, you have to return to the boarding pass counter with your bag to check in, right?
If you're going to wait until you get stopped at the gate , why couldn't you do what Bigfoot recommends and use a trash compactor bag? If you're bypassing the conveyor belts, hell...save yourself price of duffle bag, plus the cost of checking it in.
Do you recommend to shrink wrap the backpack?
Last 3 flights on American gate checked bags were sent to regular baggage claim on arrival. No pick up on leaving plane.
Hello..I have Kelly coyote 75 is it ok to carry on the plane? Thanks
How many litres is your primary backpack in the video?
What about the knife and stakes?
How do you get your poles thru TSA?
check out demobags on Amazon and add your own reusable zip tie - bigger, stronger, lighter, uglier than everything else. Most damaged luggage that has that shredded torn apart appearance is due to loops and straps and handles...anything that can get caught on something else. There is nothing to get caught on with the simple demobag.
Hey Bungzy, your 2 minute advise lasts good 5+ minutes! Anyway, what do you think of ZPacks airplane case for this purpose?
REI currently sells a rectangular nylon Pack Duffel Bag that weighs just over a pound for $40. Its dimensions (32x15x13) suggest a capacity of 100L. At least one user commented that he uses the extra space for his hiking boots and perhaps other gear.
Of course, it’s always smart to have a jacket, a change of clothes, toiletries, first aid kit, prescription medicines, electronics, and any other necessities in a carry-on bag small enough to fit under the seat in front of you, so you’re sure to be able to keep it with you on the plane.
Come on man artyex duffle. You must have money lol. ULA came out with a new 95 liter duffle it don’t seem bad I think it’s 100. But seriously just go to Ross or tjmaxx and see what they got
Or an army surplus duffle
What if you have a gun in your bag because I’m going to travel by foot and I’m thinking of bringing a gun in my bag but I have to take a flight to where I wanna to travel to and then start walking from there my question is how would I get my gun and other survival items past security in the airport?
My husband was fined $2500 for forgetting his gun in his briefcase. We didn't plan to bring it but he always carries it in his briefcase when he's home. He learned the hard way...Urghhhh......
Always research TSA regulations before traveling.
Is this question for real?
@@lakwatchera4115 The Wild West
@@lakwatchera4115 it’s not a ridiculous question. Flying with a firearm in the U.S. is legal if it is checked and contained in a locked TSA container and declared. Camping and fishing guides in Alaska often bring a gun for bear defense. I’m not sure if TSA regulations change if the gun and approved case was packed in a checked backpack as opposed to a checked suitcase though, so that’s something to look up or ask. Having a firearm in carry on bag is definitely a no-no, and will get you arrested.
strollers? oh you mean push chairs.
anyone ever tell you you look and sound like my self reliance?
