- Sonoff has released their new version of their Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus, the ZBDongle-E. And Home Assistant released the SkyConnect. In this video, I'll show you how to set these sticks up in Home Assistant and share some tips to help you get the most out of this Zigbee stick. Although these sticks are currently classified as experimental on the Zigbee2MQTT site, I still took the plunge. I've tested these sticks extensively over the past few days and even transferred my entire house to the Sonoff Zigbee Dongle-E. For this, I linked the stick to Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant. I'll show you how you can do that first. At the end of the video, I share my experiences and give tips to make these sticks work as good as possible. This tutorial is also valid for the Sonoff Dongle-P.
NOTE: if you use the ember firmware, you need to replace the adapter line by
serial:
adapter: ember

I ordered one through your link and received it a week ago. However, I had several issues when trying to run it in parallel (at the same time on the same HA) with Deconz and the Conbee 2 stick. I was thinking I could move devices/entities while Conbee 2 was active. I was wrong. It caused some conflicts that I never identified. I think it was more about Zigbee than it was about the sticks. But it's just a gut feeling right now. I was able to update my firmware on the E-stick using Linux, minicom, and Xmodem.
@@traxeonic3600 You can try to change the channel of one stick, maybe they interfere.
@@SmartHomeJunkie Unfortunately. Z2M is a mess for me. I had 12 devices on ZHA with Conbee2. I dropped all the devices. Removed the stick. and installed Z2M. I have Aqara and IKEA devices. The bulk of my IKEA switches are showing as unsupported by Z2M, interrogation is failing, and left useless. I moved my HA PI into a room where I could lay every device next to it. The E-stick is on a usb extension wire. So there is no radio interference. Super big mistake for me. I was hoping to get the firmware upgrade features too. Thank you for your video, but it has been really an awful experiment for me. 😀
@@traxeonic3600 That's too bad to hear. I've got my whole house paired with it. There is an issue with Ikea tradfri remotes, but I'm not sure if it's Dongle E that's. There are github issues for those reviews reported that they don't work anymore after the latest update of Z2M.
@@SmartHomeJunkie I switched out the Dongle E with the Conbee 2, set the device in z2m and serial: >- adapter: deconz and it all is instantly working. Looks like it's the "experimental" nature of the "E" that's getting me.
I was struggling to set this up. Tried following several tutorials. Finally, this one worked! Thanks a lot.
It saved my life, I saw several Brazilian tutorials and none of them helped, thank you very much. ♥
Thank you for this video, finally got it to make it work, I had the sonoff stick lying around for months and tried a few times to install Zigbee2Mqtt without success. Following your video finally I got it working!
Been watching YT videos all day and reading forums ALL DAY trying to figure out why my dongle wouldn't...but not one other 'expert' bothered to tell me that I needed to add that extra code for the E Dongle. You solved my problem with one video and I really appreciate it!
You just saved me multiple hours of troubleshoot by explaining everything step by step. I was able to find few things I did wrong, thank you so much!
OH, thank you! It was 2 weeks of struggle with my Moes radiator head, and I finally made it with your videos (firmware flash and this one). Your explanations are super clear. Thank you, legend
Well, I'm glad I could save you from a two-week struggle! Sometimes these things can be a real headache, but I'm here to make it a little easier for you. Keep watching and I'll keep providing clear explanations!
Thanks to all that said rebooting the Pi would solve the problem. I actually unplugged and then plugged it back in. Thank you again.
Man I would never be able to make this stick work without your video. Thanks a lot :)
Superb step by step guide for the Sonoff Zigbee 3.0. Thanks a lot, and keep up the great work you do!
Thank you so much!
I was stressed by failures from other CZcamsrs when I saw this video. And everything works like a charm ! Many many thanks pal for your excellent work!!! The real pain for me was the wrong section ( many people says to leave it empty) of the mosquito configuration.
hello, I wanted to thank you very sincerely because out of 5 installation videos that I tried, you are the only one with whom it worked, again a big thank you
Great that it helped!
Your explanations are clear. I really appreciated the pedagogy with which you indicated beforehand what you were going to do before going into the explanations. Complicated things then become simple and transparent.
In your description, there is the link of the blog of your video which resumes in structured text the operating mode that you follow. Very very useful! Personally, I watched the video several times by reducing the speed and activating the subtitles in my language.
You have helped me a lot. Big thanks !
Thank you so much for this really nice comment! 🙏🏻
You are an ABSOLUTE LEGEND. Been searching from multiple forum and discussion group none of them got the solution from this, spent extra for an extension cable but no luck. THIS VIDEO IS GOLD
Thanks! 🙏🏻

Finally, I managed to pair my Zigbee-e with your help, thanks!
Glad I could help!
very clear tutorial. i struggled a bit with some issue in have zigbee2mqtt working. but with ressources in description and some google search i was able to make it work.
That's awesome!
Your video really helped me in setting up my dongle with Zigbee2MQTT. I didn't realize I had the -E version and when I tried using other videos, I couldn't get the Zigbee2MQTT to run, even trying firmware updates. At some point I realized my dongle was different and discovered it to be the -E version. Then I found this video. The point that especially made this work is @4:58 when the "adapter: ezsp" is added to the serial field. Once this was done it loaded and worked!
Thank you so much for the walkthrough and calling out this specific version of the dongle in the title. I also changed the Address of the mosquitto-core to the numerical IP address (I have a pretty complex VM/Synology server with Vlans)
hey, thanks for the comment. did you have any trouble with pairing it or it not being able to recognize some device features?
@@nateF888 once I realized my initial issue, everything went well. No issues with the hue or other zigbee devices
Very well done. I installed no problems. Thanks!

I tried install Zigbee2MQTT and pair the Sonoff Dongle-E with others video but was not successful, until I follow your instruction. Thank you!

Thanks for the video mate ! Helped me get my dongle setup and running ... i have subbed to the channel for more helpful videos in the future
Thank you 🙏🏻
you made my day: after connecting the dongle out of the box I got communication errors.
Checking documentation and following the troubleshooting guide there was no reason find for that.
Finally the small code snippet
"adapter: ezsp" in configuration file made it work.
I found nothing like that in my sources...
Second brilliant hint was getting close to the dongle for pairing.
That made the difference in operation.
Thank you for solving all my problems in one brilliant video!
Thank you!
I had exactly this issue as well!
Thank you SHJ for your clear explanation, I managed with your help and a little bit of myself :-): I got stuck after configuring the Zigbee2MQTT: it couldn't be saved. After some desperation, I removed ">-" after port:. After that I was able to save and it works as it should. Afterwards I see that HA has put the ">-" back itself.
Doing great things for the community.
Thank you.
great video. had some trouble with the configuration until i saw how you did it in yours

OMG you made my day!
I kept hitting into Error: Failed to connect to the adapter (Error: SRSP - SYS - ping after 6000ms) for 3 days when I followed the other tutorials for the older P version... Now it works and the fun can start!
Great to hear that I made someone's day today! 👍🏻
I am still hitting the Error: SRSP - SYS - ping after 6000ms, even with this great tutorial..... frustrating at the least
@@cbosjesman I can only say, look at the website that the log file refers to. You might have a specific issue that is mentioned there.
@@cbosjesman Hello, I have exactly the same problem and the same dongle as you. Have you found a solution?
@@marceaum actually I have, I have to look back into my HA to look what I did. But I am pretty sure I first flashed the stick with the proper firmware. Because although I did it before, I discovers it was not done properly. I used the python method. Will get back to this if I found out exactly what I did.
great tutorial - thanks!!
Very nice explanation. This is basically the same drill when adding the Sonoff ZB Bridge (tasmotized) - in the config file under serial, you set port to the IP of the bridge, and add adapter:ezsp. I use Node Red instead of HA, but installation of zigbee2mqtt is the same.
what does adapter: ezsp do?
@@MarinDzhigarov It tells zigbee2mqtt that you are using a bridge of some sort other than a directly supported (firmware flashet) USB receiver.
You are an absolute legend!!! Thanks so much!
Thanks!
This is one of the best explanations to follow, I had a small issue starting the Zigbee2MQTT when using the long USB device ID. I ran the command "test -w /dev/ttyUSB0 && echo success || echo failure" which confirmed if access to the port is success or not. When I configured the port with success, port: /dev/ttyUSB0 it started working
You deserve a cookie! It worked!
Thank you. I was really hungry 😉
Fantastic work thank you. going to donate to you today.
Thank you Joel! Thanks to donations I can keep doing this. Otherwise it will end someday. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Got the Sonoff Zigbee E dongle now and finally everything is working. Never had any luck with the skyconnect, still doing it's job as a pure Thread modem though.
Bravo!!! My English no so good like I wish, but your videos are very very easy to understand
Thanks a lot man! I was struggling to configure my adapter because of the lack of the adapter information with the port.
Thank you for your support! 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
Brilliant tutorial. I followed your steps (almost) exactly and it failed! But then I found I'd missed 2 spaces before the port value. Proper indentation is critical I'm discovering with HA. I corrected that and it worked!
Excellent!
Thank you so much sir!
I got it working perfectly thanks to you!
I'm so glad to hear that it's working perfectly for you! You're welcome!
"MQTT error: getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND core-mosuitto"
Ik hoop dat ik eruit kan komen.
Het moet core-mosquitto zijn en niet core-mosuitto
Nice video! I was able to get my ZBDongle-E working with these instructions. I had to remove my ZHA integration, but after that my Zigbee2MQTT started to work.
Took me around an hour to figure this one out too. Great video, but you could definitely add this as a note. Zigbee2MQTT wont start if you have a set up and running ZHA integration. Fails with something like:
Error: Failure send setConfigurationValue:{"type":"Buffer","data":[4,0,1,83,0,1,255,0]} at /app/node_modules/zigbee-herdsman/src/adapter/ezsp/driver/ezsp.ts:512:23 at Queue.executeNext (/app/node_modules/zigbee-herdsman/src/utils/queue.ts:32:32)
EDIT: Okay now I watched the video all the way to the end and saw that you do mention it.
@@TheHastur667 and how did you remove the ZHA integration? I'm quite new to all this and I won't find anything but configuration.yaml and there I cannot see anything. I removed from devices the automatically detected entity but it appears again when restarting HA. On services I cannot find any related to zigbee service neither...

Good job !

I followed your instructions but could not figure out why Zigbee2MQTT would immediately stop working after starting. But when I watched the complete video, I realized I had already set up ZHA integration with my Sonoff Dongle E. After removing ZHA integration, Zigbee2MQTT started working perfectly. Thanks a bunch!
Superb that you got it to work!

Hi
Just switched over to this new stick from the Deconz. It was actually quite easy. This is how it is done:
- put new (coordinator) stick in (Dongle-E)
- remove "old" stick / coordinator (Deconz)
Thanks for your video. This helped me find the DNS name of Mosquitto Broker
That's great to hear!
Nice video, thanks :)
that 'adapter: ezsp' bit did the trick for me for the E model. Thanks a lot.
These tutorials are far more detailed than on other HA You2bers :)
Thank you for your compliment!
really helpful thanks
Thanks for excellent tutorial.
I had to remove the `adapter: ezsp` serial setting for pairing to work.
I have an 'e' Sonoff adapter. They may have updated the add-on, but not the documentation.
🤔 That shouldn't be the case. Are you sure that that setting is also removed from the configuration.yaml of Zigbee2MQTT?
For testing purposes I remain my Conbee II stick on ZHA. For Z2M I used a Sonoff without E ;-) and I successfully paired an IKEA bulb, a Hue Remote and a Hue Bulb. I was able to switch the bulbs on and off, change colors and so on. But: None of these three devices were shown in the devices list of HA. I'm glad, that I was clever enough to try it with only three devices. So Z2M is an unsuccessful experiment for me. But thank you anyways for your video!
If they don't show up in Home Assistant, then probably you filled in the wrong credentials or mqtt server in your Zigbee2MQTT configuration.
@@SmartHomeJunkie
Hmm, I can't prove it right now. because I restored a prior state of my ha-server. But I try the following right now: I enabled mqtt on a Shelly relay using the ha-mqtt mosquito server. I added a user to ha. With MQTT.fx I can switch the relay and get all sensor data.
Then I edited configuration.yaml and added the Shelly as switch, platform mqtt. After rebooting it doesn't show up either. The mqtt server log says, that there would be no username and password (New connection from 192.168.1.78:64016 on port 1883.
error: received null username or password for unpwd check).
I'm running out of ideas...
I FINALLY have Zigbee2MQTT running. No more 502: Bad Gateway errors!
Thank you for your support and great to hear!!!
Thank you so much for this i had the ZDongle E and failed following another guide due to differeing config to this version. Only addition i did was to add " " between the user / password as would not work without - authentication failure
Thanks for the video! I manage to link my ZBDongle-E, I just skipped the user creation for mosquito and even that works also :)
I guess it will work in Zigbee2MQTT, but you won't see the devices in HA if you do not configure the username and password in the config of Zigbee2MQTT.
@@SmartHomeJunkie I'm pretty noob in this situation, but I think with the latest versions is not necessary anymore, My HA , Mosquitto broker addon and Zigbee2MQTT see all the devices discovered.
maybe the trick is to have the Mosquitto broker addon, I just realized that... sorry hehehe
@@GibokunGG Yes, you need the Mosquitto broker add-on, but without seeing the username and password in the Zigbee2MQTT configuration of should not work. It might be that the username and password is stored in the configuration.yaml of Zigbee2MQTT and you do not see it in the configuration of the add-on, but it really isn't possible to let it work without that.
You are awesome!!!
You too!!
Interesting video again and pleased a significant increase in patreons - you certainly deserve it for the content you provide. Can I ask - what was the reason for the change from ZHA to Zigbee MQQT did you have issues? I see the there is a big difference in signal strength 5db to 20 db -has it made any difference and finally was there anything that did not pair and have you had any dropouts.
I did not move from ZHA to Zigbee2MQTT, but I have tested ZHA and found some devices that did not work well for me in ZHA, while they do work well in Zigbee2MQTT.
This Dongle-E is still experimental and I do have some strange behavior now and then with my automations, but I expect it has something to do with retained messages from MQTT using my Conbee 2 stick. So I am still investigating this. In my experience, migrating to a new stick or system takes about two weeks before everything works perfect again. There's a lot to check.
As usal, very helpfull. Thanks for your tipps!
You're welcome!
You're welcome!
Thanks for this easy tutorial. One problem which drove me crazy:
If you use a SSD for the RP4 as boot + the Sonoff Stick, it is recognized but devices will not pair/ be discovered. This was due to the 3A limit of the power supply!! Active USB Hub and now everything works fine
Thank you both, for the video tutorial and also for the comments as I am also equipped with RP4 + SSD + the Sonoff Stick and it was not working until I added an Active USB Hub 🙂
Today I got my Sonoff ZBDongle E and luckily the first video I found on CZcams was yours. The setup of the stick worked right away and I have added 3 Philips Hue devices without problems right away. Looking forward to find more useful hints from you.
That's awesome!
very good tutorial as usual !! Thank you for this video, very helpful for such difficult things to configure.
I faced one issue with Zigbee2MQTT configuration when click on save (minutes 4:58).
I got an error message like "not a valid value". I struggled to figure out the error, and it was because of my password format; It started with a number. After changing my password by starting with a letter, it works (Just my 2cts in case of newbie like me has the same error)
Looks like the password didn't want to play nice with numbers! But hey, now you know the secret handshake to get it working - start with a letter! Thanks for sharing your experience and helping out other newbies who might face the same issue. Keep rocking those configurations!
I had issues starting the Zigbee2MQTT, and eventually got it to work. Two points to note:
1) The username is likely case sensitive, Initially I had mixed case, and switched to lower case.
2) More importantly, I initially had special caracters in the password, and the password was 50 chars long. Only when I significantly shortened the password and removed all special chars did the service start. I did not test to pinpoint the password length threshold.
I have some non-alphanumeric characters in my password, so I don't think its all special characters however I guess there maybe some clashes with certain specials.
Nice !!
Thanks for your nice tutorial ! I was missing the "adapter: ezsp" to make it work.
Keep your good work. 🙂
Bedankt!
Dank je wel voor je support!
Another best practice tip is to buy and use a powered USB 2.0 hub if you are using a computer with only USB 3.x ports, then connect the USB extension cable to the USB 2.0 hub instead of directly to the computer. The reason for this is that USB 3.x ports and cables cause a lot of interferance to 2.4GHz radio devices.
Thx. I use the HA Blue that only has USB-3 ports. For me, it works fine with only an extension cable. But, I know this is recommended on the Z2M site when you have issues.
Perfect thanks for the vidéo

So it seems basically there is no difference between the "old" Sonoff stick and the current one concerning installation and usage.
Gues, IF there are any performance / reliability issues so far with the new Stick, this will be a simple firmware business.
As I wanted to be one the "safe road" I've ordered the old Sonoff stick to use it with Z2M.
Everything works blasting fast and stable. But I have to mention that I run everything on a Lenovo NUC i5 with Proxmox as my Host.
HA as Docker Container inside a LXC Container. MQTT & Zigbee2MQTT also on seperate LXC Proxmox Containers.
I don't regret that step. Before I was using HAOS in a VM. The difference of speed and "snappines" is definitely noticeable.
Sorry for the off topic. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Is that difficult to do? I have ha on VM. A bit slow...
@@caspersn1971 no it's not
@@hammerlized can you recommend a turtorial?
Just FYI, if you use a passphrase for the mqtt-user, you will need to re-add it in the settings section inside Zigbee2MQTT as for some reason it does not like "-" when putting it in the configuration part of the add-on. Now it works really well. Now I want to swap out all of my wifi devices for zigbee.
Okay. In my case this was not needed. Not sure why you had to do it that way. But great that it works for you!

I’m very new to HA, but one thing I can add... my HA is running in a docker container on Ubuntu. I had to add the Sonoff stick using the Add Hardware option before it could be seen in my VM. No doubt that’s obvious to the experts...
Thanks for adding this. This will no doubt help other people.

Works perfectly!!! Thanks!! I have a tuya hub too. Can i add it on MQTT via zigbee mesh too?? I try pair, but don't apear.
That is a superb tutorial! First I struggled with passing through my dongle through the ESXI to the HomeAssistant. I managed this somehow, but then I really got stuck on starting the Zigbee2MQTT with the E-dongle. ZHA worked without a problem, but not the Zigbee2MQTT. Thank you for making this video! Followed it and it all worked as a charm. Just one, maybe stupid question - why do we need to add separate user? Could we use the original one that was created with the installation of the HomeAssistant OS?
