Piano improvisation in c minor on the Clavia nord electro 3 and nord wave

- An improvisation on a little theme that came to my mind the other night.
acoustic piano sound from the nord electro 3 73;
pad sound from the nord wave (via midi from the nord electro; volume controlled with a yamaha fc9 pedal);
audio recorded with a phonic helix board 18 firewire mkII; software: cubase studio 5;
video recorded with a sony dsc-w130 digital camera; software: adobe premiere standard;
After 14 years since I listened to this I still love it.
Really great composition, no flourish, only simplicity, inspiration and earnest execution.
Pad sound is really well injected and balanced.
All those years after I first watched it, I came back to this video as I had memorized your beautiful improvisation. You deserve more recognition!

@Erikolson99 actually the second sound is a synth sound from the nord wave (almost organ like, yes) which receives MIDI from the electro 3. controlling the volume with a volume pedal.

Yes, I think I've used the "studio grand" (yamaha C7) For classical and jazzy tunes I prefer the steinway samples now. They weren't available at that time I recorded this video.

From what I've read, the NE3 does have MIDI capabilities. You can connect with other workstations/keyboards as well and use 2 different patches from the NE3 at the same time.

I used the "studio grand yamaha c7". but there is now a XL version available with some extra layering samples. Sounds even better.
Additionally I used the internal compressor and the internal reverb (I think it was set to "stage" at a low amount)

That depends on what you need and what you want to play.
nord piano pros: really good piano-like claviature, half pressed sustain pedal samples -> more realistic piano sounds, additional nord piano 2 (!)pro: you can upload samples like strings, etc
nord piano cons: no organ sounds, heavier than the electro
nord eletcro3 pros: organ sounds, the same piano sound just without some extra samples. very lightweight.
cons: organ claviature - depends on if you like it; difficult to play classical piano

Sounds beautiful...you can't get that great piano tone on the NE2...that's why I'm upgrading...also for the Mellotron and piano libraries that have a million other great patches.

Wow! Really impressive for improvisation, and even if it wouldnt be, it still would be really really beutiful, we think alike in improvisation i think, alot of similar chord progressions :), but you're quite a bit ahead. :P 5 stars!
busted :-) Well, that's the beauty of impro: You may have some very detailled ideas on your mind but at the end you never know where it's gonna take you. Especially in solo improvising you can go in literally any musical direction.

I just got my NE3 a couple weeks ago, and I can't even come close to that acoustic piano tone you're getting. Is that a pre-loaded sample bank or from the sample library? What amp do you run it through? As well, you're playing sounds soooo dynamic compared to what the standard piano sounds seem to provide. Are you using the volume pedal to add some dynamic depth while you're playing? Either way this is beautiful, and if you haven't fully composed this, DO IT NOW!!
I Played this when I had to tell a Vodafone employee I didn't want to extend my contract with them. Saddest girl ever.
sorry that this comment might be a bit rude, but nearly every keyboard nowadays has midi. At least every keyboard that is not a toy or a veryvery beginner keyboard (minimoog voyager old school doesn't have midi because it is "old" version of voyager and the midi has been left out intentionally)
you can't layer two patches on NE3... only thing you can do is to control the lower manual of the organ with some other keyboard that has different drawbar settings but that uses the same effects...
awesome. wish i could play like that. i'm thinking of getting the nord electro 3 for piano and organ sounds. does it have any string sounds or synth sounds too ? or can you load them in ? load samples in too ? i was looking at the kurzweil sp47 as well but not sure if the piano sounds are really that much better / worse. what do you think ?

You can use this melodie for a great movie .
If you had writed the score ( sheep)( i don't know in english) i want it.
also, the piano has 88 keys, the electro just 73 or 61 (most of the time that's enough)
there's also an electro version (3HP) with a more piano-like claviature. I didn't like it so much. It's not as good as the nordpiano claviature and quite loud.
conclusion: If you need JUST a piano then take the nordpiano. if you also need an organ sound or you are comfortable with an organ claviature and you have to travel a lot (going to rehearsals by train or bus) take the electro. either way: try'em out!
Hi tyroleankeyboarder, I am keyboard player that like to use pianos for Moder contemporary music with delays and stuff... I also like using pads, synths and sometime emulate some instruments that are not in the band when playing live... I wanted to ask you on regards to the feel of the waterfall keys since I had read it is not good, what is your feedback on that. For what i can listen from your playing it sounds super good. Can Önal For this video I think I used one of the "Studio Grand" pianos on the nord piano library. still use it most of the times. I do like Yamaha pianos in general. With the close up microphones it makes a good "everyday - every use" piano, for "pop song" comping recordig as well as live. Also love the Steinway with the distant mics - works great for solo piano classical or jazz recordings, but the sound might be a little bit too "thin" for jamming with a live band. It does have more character though.
