- I've built up what I believe to be one of the fastest race bikes for 2023, for under $4000 USD or $5000 AUD.
I purchased everything on this bike besides the 81mm wheels which are generously on loan from Caden, see them here: carbonbikewheels.com.au/en/pr...

So turns out the Lifeline "race" tyre is light and supple, but trash rolling resistance. GP5000 on the way...
Couldn’t fault it otherwise, I love the paint job from this generation, new ones just put the logo on and call it a day…
I've been using lifeline for some time and they perform well for training but gp5000 is whole another story
Yo Jessie, when are you going to explain to the world that I am the first one to ever use structured training with intervals in cycling?
When I was doing structure training the professionals were just randomly riding around aimlessly like a bunch of tarts
good winter and training tyre
do you recommend vittoria or GP5000 all the way?
There are 12,000 dollar bikes that do not even come close in terms of weight :) absolutely stellar build :)
Love the simplicity and ease of use/maintenance of rim brakes.
Disc brakes are the bike industry answering a question no asked for road bikes.
As a former professional team mechanic, I can say that the GIANT TCR Advanced frames/bikes have been a form favourite by many professionals who've ridden them.
They don't suit every amateur rider due to their long top tube, but for those with a longish torso/arms, you can't go wrong.
how do you find setting up the modern bikes with everything integrated?
What other bikes u recommend for someone that is not too flexible
@@billyk2011
I work freelance as a professional mechanic these days & so work on all & everything in today's equipment.
The doing & set up on all integrated is something us mechanics have got used to on a daily basis...yes it's a pain in the arse for replacing cables, though with more & more groupsets becoming gear wireless at the cockpit, it's down to only feeding the brake housing on 12speed groupsets.
I'd say amateurs who work on their own bike are more suited to non integrated cockpits in most cases, unless the individual is at one in his mechanical work.
It cleans up the front end, sure, but it's mot practical or needed for all.
@@marcustan5868
Please explain your meaning, not flexible?
In what way?
@@tman5634 I guess since u work with many bikes, what are some bikes that u really like and u think is really well made and geometry is not too aggressive like the tcr
Rim brake TCR Adv SL - the best frame option currently available. Giant is one the few frame brands that actually owns their manufacturing and they are masters of carbon fiber technology, SL is high modulus carbon, crazy light and very stiff, frame is aesthetically brilliant without any goofy shapes to insult our intelligence. Wheel choice is also brilliant. Jesse knows his stuff
Rim for road, disc for dirt, spin for the win baby!
Love it. I have a new ultimate rim brake from canyon. On only weighs 15lbs and cost 2400$ usd new! Freakin steal
Let's get something on the table right away: disc brakes on road bikes suck. This bike is GORGEOUS and LIGHT because it was spared the bolt-to-the-wheel-hubs pizza-cutters.
Nice one Jesse, watch the comments erupt. Rimbrake, narrow tyres, super light, fast, fun. Only way to go 👍👌
Wow you have shown what is possible in 2023 with a blast from the past and still look aesthetically clean
Love seeing rim-brake bikes. So many great buys out there.
Bike industry needs to go back to this style of bikes. New bikes are heavy complicated expensive junk.
Sick bike jesse! Beautiful bike, i think even durianrider would approve 👌
RIM BRAKE 4 LYFE!!
Rim bike, old skool & light weight over aero.........Good lad
I'm on Rim Brakes Too. I don't ride in the rain and wet conditions. I enjoy my two Rim Brake Bikes with SRAM Red and Dura Ace!
Rim Brakes? Yesssssssssssss!
Yesss! We needed that video! $5k weapon. ….and the amount of $10k + bikes you will embarrass because you’re riding it is priceless!
Love it, Jesse. Keeping it Rim Real, and the bar is the cherry on the top. Looks excellent with the Lun wheels too. I’ve just made the move to a ‘22 giant Propel advanced pro after 11 years of only buying and riding canyon bikes, and I love it. One of the best frames I’ve ever had.
Durianrider gonna cream himself over that bike
Already did
Absolutely love the TCR. I have one myself still on rim brakes.
Still on rim brakes also!
Supersix hm,dura ace di2,quarq,tubulars
You look legitimately stoked with the bike and thats what put a smile on my face. Obviously every detail was considered and you got what you wanted. Enjoy mate #savetherim
I have that bar on my SL7 and it makes the bike feel like a space ship. Absolute gamechanger, love this build.
What degree is it? -15 or something?
Love the rim brake Giant. Sweet ride.
Nothing beats an "old school" rim brake setup. All of the best with the coming race season 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
A modern disc brake setup does ;)
@@messi9991 not sure. In terms of weight not really, and in terms of aero i am yet to see proofs of that. Maybe for comfort ? But who cares about comfort on perfect slick race roads.
@@drym3943 ah it was a tease. Someone who prefers rim prefers rim, someone who prefers disc prefers disc.
@@messi9991 It's got nothing to do with preference, and all to do with suitability. Easy to live with rim brakes and narrow tyres in a warm, sunny place with smooth tarmac. If he lived in a country with lots of rainy weather, harsh roads and generally anti-cyclist, car loving population like the UK and most European countries he would be mad not to make a switch to disc brakes.
@@82vitt preferences will be dictated by environment.
Love it mate. Rim brake all the way!
I luv the lack of cables…..on my rim bike, my only little gripe is that I have cables for the gearing…..however I’m a huge rim brake fan! ✊👏🇬🇧
Can't go wrong with a TCR!
Not the most la-di-da, drool worthy bikes out there but you know what, they do exactly what they say on the tin at a price that won't give you a heart arrhythmia. Love mine to bits. Just wish I had a nice electronic group set to go with it. Maybe when I'm a grownup 😅
Beautiful - rim brake bikes look ace
Bang for buck, you can't beat the TCR. Love mine.
Nice one Jesse - in Feb I "upgraded" my 2018 TCR SL1 to SL0 spec with D/A Di2 + Winspace 38mm + eebrakes + and bare carbon frame+clear coat....just under 5.95kgs...these frames are already becoming collectible for weightweenie builds. My (+1.6kg) Propel SL0 is now collecting dust (lol).
So refreshing seeing an influencer not selling out to the disc brake BS! 👏
He lives in a sunny Sydney though (and does own a disc brake bike for foul weather riding). If he lived in a country with a harsher climate chances are he would be on discs for all riding. Also, chances are that he hasn't sold out to the disc brake BS, simply because he hasn't been offered a top disc brake bike for free. You would be surprised how revisionist people can be when money enters the chat.
@@82vitt long live rim brakes
@@devinmorrison7131 I know, right :). I am myself just now waiting for the delivery of my new rim brake frame set. A Time.
Good to see someone else take the same approach to buying a bike as I do. Nice ride!
Hey Jesse, love your setup with both Hypers & Caden wheels. I’ve been riding Hyper 50s on my TCR disk for 2 yrs & a huge fan .. they’re bulletproof, stiff & fast. Enjoy 👍
Rim brakes for the win! It's a very beautiful bike, Jesse. Nicely done!
great looking build, was excited to see this one! Great call Jesse!
Trimmable seat posts scare me. I cut it and cut it and it is still too short.
I have the exact frame but with zipp bars. Love it. I race on 60mm Reynolds tubeless with 25mm contis. Very smooth. I bought my bike off a pro MTBer who used it for soft road rides. Love this bike. You’ll love yours!!!
I've had my Giant Tcr Tmobile carbon for 20 years and it's still great.
Such an amazing build ! Congrats and enjoy it Jesse!
Very cool and well thought out weapon. Glad to see the rim brakes! You'll have fun on that beast.
That’s the best looking build I’ve seen this year. Well done
Looks great, you must be pleased. Love the you have rim brakes
Great to see you choosing this frame! I have the same 55cm frame for my training bike in different colour with DA9000 groupset, DT-Swiss alloy wheels, same saddle with steel rail and weight in 6.9kg. Very stiff and sharp handling bike.
Nice set up! Thanks for sharing.
Apart from the price and ease of use, rim brakes just look much better.
Plus quality pads last for ages.
Yeah as someone who had to make the switch to Disc recently, extremely jealous of that race rig. Everyone telling me I need to run wider tires so was happy to see 23mm on the front wheel too. That thing will be a rocket ship in crit races.
I have the same frame, same year and I just love it!. The power transfer with this bike is fantastic - it just goes. I have no urge to get a new bike, fearing the performance will not be as good as the TCR. I agree it is stiff and twitchy but that adds to excitement and speed of this bike. People overlook the TCR cause it's a Giant which doesn't have the same cachet as a Specialised or a Cervelo. Am sure it will bring you many wins Jesse!
Yes, people look and go "oh, it's only a Giant". 😳🤣 I've been wondering what is going to better it when I buy the next one and it's highly likely I'll get a TCR.
@@garyoneill8868so true. performance wise there is little to no difference in all brands driven in the peloton and for amateurs it shouldnt even make a difference at all which bike to get since it is way cheaper and better to improve your performance by adding a bit of structure to your weekly rides to improve your ftp or vo2max or change your diet a bit to lose some bodyfat.
as long as i train for certain goals i will chose my bikes according to my needs in regart to maintenace cost and performance and this means no specialized, cervelo, pinarello or anything above ultegra.
when i am old and only ride for pleasure and sunny weathers i will get myself a bianchi or some other italian bike, just to pay tribute to the beauty they create year over year.
@@sirclemeni1 spoken like a true dentist
Does the frame clear 28mm tires?
I raced with a 28mm rear tyre yesterday and it fits. Tight clearance around the brake, but no issues
what a beautiful bike - Giant TCR all the way, well done on the build
A year ago, I got a Giant TCR SL for under 3 grand new. Built it up with DA and Farsport wheels. Amazing ride and can’t beat the warranty as well!
Oh, and rim brakes. Crazy light for a MLarge.
Great looking bike! Wow! Super functional too. Looks like an absolute race weapon. You'd be paying at least double for anything new on the market today with similar spec.
Great build and it was very inspiring for me. I was lucky enough to pick up a used TCR advanced SL with 105 group set for a really decent price. The wheels it came with were questionable though I changed them for a set of alloy Mavic's that I used for training with the aim to upgrade them when something better came along. This podcast came in really timonieusly and gave me lots to consider. So thanks and enjoy your ride.
I ride a 2019 TCR Pro1 and I love it.......disc brake model. They are VERY twitchy but brilliantly responsive (don't bump one side of the handlebars accidentally😳😁) and great for crits, road racing and good climbers and descenders too. But I'm 65yo and ride different to you; much slower too but it's a fantastic bike. I do run 28mm tubeless which improves everything on it.
BEAUTIFULL !!! LOVE the color of the FRAMSET
Lovely bike mate. Whilst riding my 8 year old Cervelo R5 this morning I was thinking of the poor youth of today that will probably never know what it feels like to ride some hills on a lightweight rim brake bike. 😂
Great video Jesse ....... great bike too. Just moved to all that disc stuff and just wish they make modern rim brake stuff 😢
So refreshing to see such a sweet Rim brake bike! Nice!
congrats on the bike. Best wishes. enjoy!
I had a 2018 TCR SL rim brake in medium and I had Lun HYPER 50mm on it. It weighed in basically identical to your bike but was setup tubeless. Obviously loved it and rides as awesome as any TCR.
I then upgraded to a brand new rim brake Winspace T1500 and reused the same wheelset. Got it built up with cane creek EE G4 brakes and had it at 6.85kg. I've since smashed just about every single PR ive ever set on my TCR and that's after breaking my collar bone and losing some fitness due to riding less. The standout benefits were amazing off the line acceleration and amazingly stable descent control
Nice! Think you made all great choices👌
Very nice Jesse.. :) great build like the cockpit :)
Absolute weapon. Nice choices 👌🏼
Nice one, mate! Looks great.
my giant propel advanced 2 . is so dam fast with hyper wheels. i did a 40km tt with 350m of elevation with and average speed of 43.5 km /h doing only 217 watts. ..!! i weigh 62kg. also have the assioma peddles
Hey Jesse, thanks for posting. I have the same frame but in the grey, white scheme. I’ve been building up a Bianchi xr3 disc in the side and honestly kept thinking why am I doing this! This tcr is superb and your video has inspired me to keep it and sell the Bianchi now! I ride a large and it’s just a tad over 7kg so good. Super stiff too. Thanks for your videos and honest insights 👍
Nice ride, my go to bike is my 2014 Madone 4.3 with Conti 23s and rim brakes. It's always a good time.
Congrats! Good lookin bike!
can’t go wrong with a Giant with rim brakes too 🥳🤘🏻
i built a budget climbing machine, weighs around 6.5kg or 14.5lbs. all i do for crits is slap on 88mm wheels and im just as fast as anyone else lol. great build btw
Love it 😍 😍 🎉🎉2023 im still on my 2016 giant tcr Advanced SL..and im not going to change to disc
Wow, great review.... peak TCR. I have the same bike but using Cadex 42's (rim brake) love the wheel set but prefer Clinchers. "The perfect race bike"
that's a sick looking bike, nice cockpit too
Great Bike. I have one too, man it’s super stiff and responsive! Function and form over bling bling.
Massive fan of the build
What a rocketship! Beutiful beast. Rimbrakes forever ✊️!!
Nice work JC, please can you give us an in depth (no pun intended) review of the 80mms, one you've got a few k's in. What do they feel like to ride, there's talk about deeper being slow to accelerate, what do you make of it and how they handle in the crosswinds vs a 60mm. Cheers
Niiiice machine. I’ve really enjoyed my TCR for over 5 years.
I have the 17’ neon red sl “KOM” model, couldn’t be happier, wouldn’t trade it for any new db bike, nice video Jesse!
Love it. Ive had my fair share of TCRs and just retired my 2016 SL after 6 years. Onto a new TCR now, but these 2016/2017 SL's are a bit special
Very nice bike and build. Saddle to bar drop is massive. I do prefer disc brake bikes but your bike looks sick 😎👌
🍻 Sick bike, Jesse
rim brakes, so stylish🥰
Something about shallow carbon rims that just looks purposeful. Second hand route is a no brainer when you can get specs like this for such a low cost.
In 2023, this is beyond refreshing
Thanks for the video, great setup! What carbon specific rim brake pads do you recommend?
yup, that's just a straight weapon on pretty much any terrain. TCR's have been some of the best all around bikes on the road for years. props to Giant's no bullshit/excess approach to performance bicycle design.
Awesome bike, I have the 2018 version and comes in @ 6.5kg, running Sram red etap with AX carbon 40mm wheels, best bike out there, super comfortable.
Running the 60/81mm decadence too - amazing wheelset!
Awesome bike, I got myself a new world tour frame from 2017 last year and absolutely love it. Shame they don't make high end bikes with rim brakes anymore
Sweet ride👍
Nice man loved it rim brakes forever with ciol bike
Very nice. Rim for the win!
Sweet bike and video!
Nice build. Could be the best era of bike ito build, performance, tech and cost. I've also "regressed" (by choice) with my setup. Went from an Scott Addict RC to a CAAD10 and never been happier. Didn't notice ANY drop in performance even though it's a "downgrade" to alu.
Wow amazing looking bike!
Awesome bike and video
Sweet! Good luck for the races. Doing Nationals again per chance?
Great bike Jesse!
Amazing beautiful build man. I’m very curious about the headset cap that you used to get that flush transition between handlebar and frame
Have similar model from 2009, sick bike. On dura ace c24. Weight 7.5 kg on tiagra cranks and spd m520 pedals
