    I tried a walking boot for my little toe fracture but it increased the pain because it's too tight around the toes. It's not effective at immobilising the toes either because they can still twitch or curl. A stiff-sole fracture shoe seems a better option.

    Broken big toe here 😅 I got a splint that goes behind my calf and under my foot and orthopedist wrapped it and my foot with a bandage. I came to another city, went to a different orthopedist yesterday who added buddy taping to my treatment but it was killing my healthy toe. it was so squished and painful, so I opened it. After watching this and seeing the boot I realized I could tape my splint to my foot instead of full wrapping that compresses my foot and makes me unwrap it every few hours and doesn’t let me sleep. I’m so happy and comfortable. I’d probably wrap it again during the day. But I’ll get a good night sleep now

    Interesting!!! I just watched a video posted by a podiatrist suggesting buddy taping for a broken toe. Here's the thing. I broke the big toe on my right foot 18 months ago. Primary Dr. (who couldn't get me in for 2 weeks after the injury) suggested buddy tape or do nothing, stating there's not much you can do for a broken toe. Well, it's been 18 months, my big toe is still swollen. I have a boot in storage from previous STAR on the same foot. I'm going to get that boot out of storage today and do as you have suggested. If I don't see a change, I'm going to INSIST my primary write a referral to an Orthopeadic. Thank you for this video! P.S. There's no pain associated with the swelling because when I received my STAR (7 years ago) The STAR saved me from unbearable chronic pain from a shattered ankle. However, the procedure damaged the nerves in my foot and toes. I don't "feel" things correctly in this foot (if that makes sense) and my Big toe acts paralyzed (intermittently). Sometimes, I can't even feel if I have a shoe on. I have some funnies stories about that! Weird, I know. Regardless, my big toe should not still be swollen. My original surgeon is in MS. I'm in CA.

    I have a non-displaced fracture in the proximal phalanx of my fifth toe. It happened 2 months ago (March 8, 2017) after stubbing. I saw a doctor in a walk-in clinic the next day. He sent me for the xray and reported the fracture results. He said no treatment is necessary and I could go on a trip to Disney a few days later. So I ended up walking around on the foot a lot -- I wore crocs and had little to no pain. A month later, I still couldn't wear shoes and had a follow-up xray saying the fracture showed no signs of healing. My family doctor said to buddy tape and rest the foot for 2-3 weeks. I came across this CZcams video and bought myself a short walking boot and saw a podiatrist, who said to wear it for 4 weeks. I did as I was told and then (checking with my family doc again), removed it. I had some pain the first few days, but it's getting better and the toe looks good. However, on my most recent xray (at 8 weeks), the fracture is still visible. I'm following up with my podiatrist, but would it be advisable to continue wearing the boot?

      I broke my middle left toe into 3 pieces, the back was broken in a way that swooped around the back in a spoon shape. I was a comminuted proximal fracture. It was also originally dislocated, odd story, my puppy relocated it for me on accident. I was walking forward and my toes went around one of her back legs & she turned and relocated it. Anyhow, I broken it in April, so almost 5 months ago, because of some crazy insurance mix ups it has taken a long time to really get it looked at.
      I finally just saw an orthopedic surgeon's PA. He said everything looked fine from the most recent x-rays, they were super milky colored and difficult to see the cracks... BUT I am still in pain. I did get a boot ASAP after it happened. I didn't even get to see how bad the break was until about a month or so ago... I had one specialist say I needed surgery & the other said that was absurd and surgery would not have been necessary at all...
      I was super cautious ⚠️ the whole time because I was so scared of surgery... I know swelling in normal for a long time, but the pain is so confusing for me, I was only told to try and normalize the use of it, but it still really hurts... I also was told the boots can cause arthritis, so because of that I tried to only use it when absolutely necessary. My body naturally forces me to walk on the side of my foot, I don't even notice till it hurts... I FeeL stupid & confused about what to do... I have been of from my hobby job as a server, at a restaurant this whole time & am too scared to go back yet...
      I also noticed at times buddy taping hurt it bad, I got a stinging pain afterwards...
      How are you now? How long did it take to heal are you still in pain ???

    Dropped a heavy dresser on my big toe 2 times in a row. 😅
    Went to the doctors 2 days after, and got an x ray the next day. They didn't offer or recommend any boot tho. I'm exhausted & feeling more pain using a cane all day. Almost ready to crawl everywhere.
    From the start I wanted to be cautious and wished I had crutches so I could avoid using my foot completely. But we don't have any.
    Hoping I can get a boot and/or crutches sometime soon. I don't want to cause any more damage or delay healing.

    You saved my life! I knew something was wrong with just buddy taping and using the walking sandal. Exercising is really important to me so I didn't want to end up with a toe that didn't heal properly. For a broken pinkie toe that stopped hurting after 2 days, would you recommend a tall boot or a short boot.

    • @catara.
      @catara. Před rokem

      Same, doctors treat this like it's nothing but I don't want problems with it later in life and pinky toe is important for my exercise, balance and even proper walking. I hope it will heal without cast or boot because they won't give it to me. I was tapped flat pace of wood under my toe and part of the foot, it's working for now (it doesn't hurt that way). It's hairline fracture. I will buy a boot if there's still a pain after about a week.
      Hope your little toe is fine by now.

    Great video. Thanks for posting. I broke my fourth toe four weeks ago. Buddy taped it until the pain got worse then saw a orthopedic surgeon. The hospital properly taped it and I have been using a walking boot for two weeks. Have been elevating, resting and icing the foot. But, will the delay in treatment delay the healing? When should I stop using the boot? The doctor suggested that I go without now, and that walking will help it heal. Does that make sense if the toe still hurts?

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před 7 lety +1

      This is best evaluated by xray. I usually keep toe fractures in a boot for 3 - 4 weeks. But bone can take months to go through the healing process and may hurt during that time.

    I am at a loss. I have a comminuted fractured great toe that happened 11 weeks ago when I table crashed down on it. I have been to the orthopedic a few times. Said to stop wearing the protective shoe (not boot) i have been wearing and don't tape it up. Leave it loose. Well, here I am 11 weeks of agony. My nail is still bruised and my toe is swollen most days. I don't know if the there will be a new nail but this one is not loose yet. I really don't know what else to do. Do I really need to wear a boot up to my knee? I already have back and hip issues and I had surgery on both knees. Thanks for the video. And hope you have some insight for me.

  • @wendijade5188
    @wendijade5188 Před 8 lety +30

    Good luck with the toe but if you boot it, I wish you better luck with dealing with the joint damage a boot does to your hips after wearing one for 6 weeks. I would much rather had a sore toe.

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před 8 lety +13

      This is an important point. Wearing a boot can lead to knee, hip or back issues in some people. With proper precautions, however, a vast majority of patients have no trouble wearing a boot. The key is to use enough height in the shoe on the other foot to keep your hips even. We often recommend the use of heel lift in the shoe or even better is the use of an "Even-up" device to the shoe (you can see that here: amzn.to/1UBIfjo ). Almost everyone can wear a boot comfortably with this combination.
      A cane is also very helpful. Use it in the hand opposite the injury.
      Not properly treating a fractured toe is not a good option. While you would likely be in a boot only 3 weeks or so for a fractured toe, if it is not treated properly it can take months to heal or never heal completely. That can lead to a prolonged limp which itself has more potential to cause hip pain than a boot that is used properly.

They buddy taped my 2 little toes together and told me to see a podiatrist, together with a sandal. I went to the podiatrist who buddy taped them also, with a silicon separator btw them and sold me a small boot. When it was my turn to do the buddy toe, I didn’t use the separator anymore because it was too big. I used a little peace of cotton, instead. Last night I woke up with pain and removed the dressing and let the foot in the air. I took ibuprofen and could sleep a bit. I don’t want to use the boot for sleeping. My doc told me to be careful about the very thing you mentioned. I bought a boot, but it only goes up past my ankle, not all the way up. My doc said that was enough to stabilize my ankle and foot. Is that so? (He's a GP, not a specialist, which he was careful to say.) Is buddy taping inherently bad, or is it just that then people flex their foot, thinking they've done what they're supposed to? My toe sorta flops over, so taping it seems to help it stay upright!

      The shorter boot is usually fine, although the taller boot provides more protection and pain relief in most cases.

    This video is extremely helpful and saved me from a huge taping my big toe mistake. My door fell off my refrigerator and landed on my foot mainly my right big toe and the one next to it. I have bruising up the side,top,and all around my toes. unfortunately this is a 72 old incident and I'm not able to go to the doctor for three more days. Should I be worried about a purplish bluish skin tone that comes when I've been walking around and once I rest and elevate my foot it disappears and my skin tone returns to a normal looking bruises. help! super worried over here

      @Footankle  Před 8 lety

      +Laura Hitchcock Purplish skin tone is usually due to bruising, but that's just one of those things that will need to be examined to be determined if it is anything to worry about. See a doctor as soon as you can (preferably a podiatrist or orthopedist) and try to keep it immobilized in a walking boot until you do. BTW, OUCH! Good luck!

    I broke my middle toe on my right foot and they need to go in and do surgery because the two bone pieces aren't aligned and it's because some soft tissue is between the bones so it won't heal right. I'm getting the surgery in 2 days which is fine but they told me to buddy tape it like you said, put my foot on pillows while home, use crutches, and they also gave me this shoe thingy that's supposed to help me step. Its not a boot but just a special shoe. Is that alright or should I get the boot?

I had been buddy-taping the two toes next to my big toe and almost immediately started feeling that I was aggravating my big toe and the entire area near it. It wasn't long before that was all inflamed. Then that subsided. But now I'm having trouble with the entire foot and I'm blaming it all on overcompensating... Mostly because of this taping issue. Thank you for this. I badly stubbed my fourth toe and unfortunately a podiatrist in my area is simply out of my price range without health insurance ($250 just to be seen, plus $160 X-ray, and additional cost depending on what needs to be done for my foot - boot is $350, etc), so I went to an urgent care center where they taped my toes together and it resulted in far worse pain than I had before. I've stopped taping and ordered the boot you recommended, but unfortunately it won't be here for a few more days - so in total I won't begin wearing the boot until 1.5-2 weeks after the injury happened.
    When I went to the urgent care they physically inspected my toe, said it was probably a hairline fracture, but didn't take an X-ray because they said it wouldn't make a difference for treatment so suggested I didn't need one if I wanted to save money. I didn't have swelling or discoloration, simply ongoing pain that's been getting worse daily since I stubbed my toe and it hurts to bend it. Is it necessary for me to get an X-ray to make sure?

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před 9 lety +2

      Many times I will forgo the x-rays to help keep costs low if the patient is going to use a walking boot anyway to protect the toe. We also offer a 20% discount on all care for self-pay patients, you may very well find a podiatrist near you who offers the same discount. Boots can usually be found for around $70. For now I think wearing the boot is most important, but if you are not getting better than the xray will be needed to see why you are not improving.

    Thanks for the info. I have 3 broken toes from a car accident, the smallest toe and the 2 small ones next to it. The Orthopedic I went to see in Botswana placed me in a walking boot half the size of the one shown in this video on the day of the accident (23 May 2016). the swelling and pain is still very much prevalent even though I never once removed the walking boot for sleeping/showering. I went to see the Orthopedic for a check up yesterday and he advised 1) I start taking it off when I sleep and shower, as well as when I'm at home. 2) I start moving my toes and start trying to walk with the boot on and sometimes when its off. I haven't had the boot on for 20 plus hours and the swelling isn't going down. I have a very bad blister on my heel from constantly resting my foot on it especially during sleep. and underneath the sole of my feet (slightly underneath the middle fractured toe), it seems to have hardened and it hurts when I touch it. Is everything going okay? Swelling is still quite bad and its been 3 weeks.

      It's hard to give you a great answer without seeing you, but one thing you can try that helps many people is to use an arch support in the boot to transfer pressure off of the toe area and onto the arch. You didn't say when the accident was, but I would keep my patients in a boot after this type of injury at least 4 weeks.

    My toe next to my big toe has been broke for about 3 years. I just thought I stubbed it didn't swell up however I noticed it's now the top part of the toe knuckle it's bent so it actually points almost to the right and so I guess the tip is broke and I can't Walk on it I actually walk on my heel but I didn't go to the doctor because when I had my Bunyan surgery the doctor put a pin in my toe and I told him not to do it because I'm allergic to metals and of course he did it and I had an allergic reaction. So he had to go in and remove it and I had a cast on for an additional 6 weeks Then I still had a lot of pain shooting up my leg so he said he was gonna go in and do a wash because maybe taking out the metal it left some debris in my foot because I was still in a lot of pain outside of my Bunyan so I had 3 surgeries for just a simple Bunyan removal..... That was probably 20 years ago and it still hurts but that's a separate issue but that kind of put me off from going from getting this toe looked at. I'm 60 years old I don't drive I don't go anywhere because I have osteoporosis and hip issues so I play it safe and stay home And I haven't stubbed my toes anymore but I have to walk on my heel on that foot so I'm very conscientious of it but it's annoying sometimes

    I broke my 5th proximal phalanx on my right foot one week ago. I did see an orthopedic doctor, who did not even suggest the boot (even though I couldn't put any weight on my foot without pain) until I mentioned that I have to walk around all day at work. He gave me the walking boot and now I can walk without crutches and have returned to work, since I figured if I can walk, I can probably work. However, I work in health care and even with the boot, I'm still having pain after a long day at work. My question is: Do you think that walking in the boot at work and sometimes doing things like lifting patients (putting pressure on that foot) will slow my progress? I do want to heal as soon as possible and not have any lasting pain. If the boot is on, does it matter if I'm on my feet all day or not? Any advice is appreciated; I don't feel I got a clear answer from my doctor. Thank you in advance; I'm so happy to have found this video. A lot of people have been asking me why I'm wearing the boot as they seem to think it's "overkill" for my broken toe, but I'm so grateful for the boot!

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  Před 8 lety +2

      +Hilary L Hey Hilary - Obviously since I can't examine you this is only general information, but as long as you are in the boot and the toe is not moving you should be well protected. Bone heals best when it doesn't move (no matter how small the bone). Moving at work probably will not cause any problems. To reduce pain in the boot I have all of my patients with broken toes use an arch support in the boot to transfer pressure off of the ball of the foot and toe region. You want to use a pretty rigid arch support with a fairly high arch to best transfer pressure. The one I put most of my patients in is this one: www.ourdoctorstore.com/footankle/prolab-p3-podiatrist-designed-orthotics-full-length/ . Also, ice the toe every every night after work. The boot is the only way to go. I can't tell you how many patients we see every week who are still having pain from a toe fracture after months because it wasn't properly immobilized.

      Looney Tunes Our recommendation for all toe fractures is the the use of a walking boot. Boots do the best job at stabilizing both the bones of the toe and the muscles that insert into them. We see much faster healing and return to activity with a boot. First, if you haven't seen a foot specialist please do so right away. You do need an x-ray. A popping could be several things including the broken bone moving. A post-op shoe doesn't provide much protection for a broken toe and I would recommend a walking boot. Get in one as soon as possible and then see a good podiatrist in your area. Here is a boot we often recommend: amzn.to/2a8hiZQ You can find our list of recommended podiatrists here: www.footankle.com/patients/podiatrists-outside-washington/
