Hans Zimmer - Interstellar - Main Theme
    Piano Version by Patrik Pietschmann
Hi, my name is Patrik Pietschmann, I'm a keyboard player, arranger and hobby programmer from Germany. Since I am a huge fan of Hans Zimmer, I did an arrangement of his Main Theme from the "Interstellar" soundtrack. In this video I have tried to combine my live piano playing with the visualization of the music material by programming my own "Synthesia"-like software.
Please subscribe to my channel if you like the video! :-)

Did you know that Hans Zimmer wrote this piece after reading only one page of the script, where Cooper says goodbye to Murph? He didn’t know the genre or the story anything. He just made something incredibly heartfelt about a promise from a father to his daughter, and in that he managed to capture so much more.

I had trouble following what is going on in this song the first couple of times I heard it. But I have since listened to maybe 20 different pianists over the past month and it gets more and more mesmerizing as I try to break it down. If you look at the sheet music, you would think it is easy to play. But just try playing it. Deceivingly complex. Maddeningly so. Basically 3 dominant notes repeating while 3 chords are weaved through and around them in a variety of arpeggios. Great song.

I agree. I'm a novice myself and have only practiced this piece for a little bit yet, but I have analyzed the video and it doesn't look that difficult. The most difficult parts are the arpeggiated chords in both hands in opposite directions which might seem impossible at first, but it's really a matter of practicing a lot. After that the speed becomes the most difficult part, but that also is a matter of practice, as your speed will increase over time.

It's 4:58 AM in the morning. Couldn't sleep. So, here's to a stranger talking about her life.
Interstellar has been a life changing movie for myself. I remember I watched it when I was 16, on my own in the cinema. I had no friends during my school years to friendly explain how amazing this movie was because they perceived me as a weirdo who want to watch and dedicate 3 hours 'confusing' movie.
The soundtrack--First Step by Hans Zimmer, has been one of many things I played on my phone until this very day. When I found this video, I couldn't stop playing this soundtrack on all of my music platforms for, I think, more than a year now since the pandemic started.
It's because of this video too that I decided to buy a piano exactly the same as yours a month ago to learn. Not for anyone, but for myself as a goal. I tried to merge my work schedule while learning this piece to always keep going with my life and days that feels like torture with my depression.
I am on the 3 out of 7 pages of your music sheet today. There are some spots that are still tough for someone who never touched a piano before, but I am very determined.
It's like, whenever I played this video on my earphone or my speaker, my mind is at ease.
It's just me, and the infinite time of darkness and space.
I played guitar all my teenage years, becoming an adult with this music makes me able to cope with my piano, at least for a while.
    Thank you.
I will let you know when I am done learning this. It should be soon, hopefully.

These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. If you know Hans Zimmer, he wrote and composed this song on the premise from Nolan that this was a movie about what it means to be a father and Zimmer tapped into his own relationship with his son. Crazy how that song, would fit perfectly with the movie motion picture, INTERSTELLAR. As soon as Nolan heard the song, he knew instantly how to base the movie off of this amazing song that Hans Zimmer wrote..a true legend.

For everyone trying to learn. I started playing piano 3 months ago with the sole goal of learning this, It’s all straight forward up to arpeggios, once you get there play it super slow, 1 note every 3 seconds if you have to, but in time you will get it normal speed and even faster, I played the arpeggios everyday for 3 months and I can thankfully say after about 20,000 runs of the arpeggios I can FINALLY PLAY THIS, the ending arpeggios took a solid 2 weeks to learn, practicing everyday for 2-3 hours.
Starting from scratch never playing piano (played guitar hero expert through the fire and flames and got 93% so was good with finger scales). PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE AND YOU WILL GET IT. BEST OF LUCK HOPE THIS INSPIRES.

  • @user-gb5pw3ei7z

This song is so perfect for the theme of Interstellar because it gives you that feeling of no matter how hard you may want to do something there are some things that are just impossible to do. And instead of wasting your whole life trying to do this impossible task your time would be much more valuably spent with the ones you love. So many people miss the most important line in that movie and it's when Michael Caine admits that the plan was never going to work and that Earth cannot be saved no matter what we do. Even if we were as green as anyone could possibly be we'd still have to leave Earth. Earth was not meant to be saved. It's meant to be left. Sadly though, most people can't handle that reality and they very foolishly think it can be saved and by doing so waste their entire lives for something that can NEVER happen. I believe this is why in the movie the crew realize this and they try to find their loved ones once they realize the mission will never succeed and try to salvage what precious little time they have left. It's unbelievably depressing but something about it gives me a tiny shred of hope for some reason.

This song really brings me back to that winter by the end of covid, when I was trying to learn how to play this song for him who made me felt insane. I listened to this song again and again, curling in my own bed. I cannot tell how I felt about this song and him, this just formed a weird connection between them whenever I hear this song. But, this is truly a master piece, that always bring my endless imagination about youth, beauty and that boy. Now, everything is fading, that was just a short, confusing but beautiful time in my life. I value it. Hope I will never forget this meaningful period of life: the life under the pressure of school but also full of the first stirring in my lifetime.
