- A 4' level will not do everything for you, but it will certainly do a LOT. It's the most versatile level, and the one I use the most often.

I wish the Bostitch level was still on the market. I have used it for many years, Nate has used it for many years, and it has proven to be an excellent and extremely high quality tool. I believe it cost around $50 or so. I can recommend that level fully and without reservation. I have the 4' and 8' models. Here are a few from Amazon that look decent. (these are affiliate links)

I had bad luck with my Stabila level and probably won't buy another one. That being said they have a great reputation and many people love them.

Thank you, be safe, and be grateful.
I like how you always give level headed recommendations.
After a couple of thousand books, and 40 years of adulthood, the internet and CZcams changed my life. I subscribe to dozens of channels. Dozens. The learning curve of the things that interest me (everything) is MUCH less daunting now. If only this resource had existed 40 years ago.
This is one of my lie-in-bed-and-dream/plan books. Also very practical, with good descriptions and illustrations. I have carried it down to my project and referred to it while working. A beautiful book
I love how you break things down for us. Things that I have never even thought of. Great job!
TO EASILY TEST IF A LEVEL IS READING LEVEL: (You may have mentioned this in previous vids.) Such as when purchasing a level or to verify its accuracy on a regular basis. This is how you do it: Find any surface that is close to being level. (You can do this on a shelf in the store when you purchase a level.) Wipe any dust off the surface and place the level on the surface. Remember the location of the bubble. Then flip the lever end to end 180 degrees and place it on exact same location as before with the same side of the level against the same horizontal surface. The bubble ought to be in the exact same location, even if the surface is not exactly level and the bubble is not centered, it does not matter. If the level is level, the bubble will be in the exact same location in both readings. You can do the same for the plumb and the 45 degree. You would be surprised how many new in the store levels that are supposed to be level are not.
As a Plumber here in Scotland I commonly use a Torpedo, 600mm & 1000mm levels(or beads as we call them).
Even when I go into a video thinking I'm not going to love it or learn anything, I always learn something, and that's why I love this channel!
I watched this video & learned something. The advice you offered was practical & made sense.
what a channel !! I think back on the decades of learning on the job, and along comes CZcams and the Essential Craftsman.....There is so much to learn on this channel, it should be required watching for all new newbies.......
Look for the Bostich at
I find your advice on this subject on the level.
I have a 74" stabila extending level that goes out to about 12 feet. As a framing contractor it's invaluable to me. Great video as usual
I have several levels but I have to admit I really like my old Sands levels. Made out of solid cast aluminum , nice and solid . They've served me well for many many years. Thank you for your excellent videos.
Thank you. You explain everything in perfect clarity
Aberration - a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected
Thank you so much for not being a shill. I have watched so many people here go down that slippery slope.
Good video! I use my 4ft and torpedo all the time. My father has an old aluminum level similar to the one in the video. It still is in good working condition. I've compared it to newer ones. :)
I see what you're up to, Scott! Selling your 4-ft Bostitch level on eBay and trying to drum up some bids. Sneaky. ;)
Couldn't agree more!! I fit kitchens and bathrooms and find that my 4' level does the job, but I also found my laser level to be a worthy investment for the tiling and building dividing walls.
Well I own every Empire level and yes that includes the 8 footer. I don't use it a lot but damn if it doesn't look good on the wall of my shop. I enjoy using good quality tools. I think you have forgotten more about construction than I know but I do respect my work. Thankyou for letting me learn from you.
