At first I basically clicked on this video because I was missing Taemin 😅. I always thought that music analysis of his songs would not interest me that much until now.
But it is amazing how Drew is capable at the first hearing to detect so much when I myself didn't distinguish almost any after multiple hearings lol. Of course he is a pro but he was actually watching the Mvs, so he could have been distract by Taemin’s dance or vocal, or any visual part or lyrics, yet he was able to focus on the construction of the melody itself!
Taemin’s songs and almost every SM songs are quite well done, not so much repetitive or sounded empty when they are (because criminal actually has the same notes in different instruments and effects all along yet it is not boring but addictive because as he said it is damn well done!)
Taemin’s work is so much detailed in every way possible... the outfits, the lights, the camera angle and moves, the choreo, the signature of each era, the lyrics, the articulation of each song with each other for every albums, the makeup, the vocal and moves matching perfectly the beat, his facial expression, his stare, the stage decoration ... gah ... the amount of work is insane! Despite everything told about SM mistreated its idols, I'm actually glad Taemin is in one of the big 3 agencies (I won't acknowledge Hybe so far, sorry.) Because it gives him the means to achieve his vision. He is recognized by his peers there and his voice is highly taken into account now.

Taemin's solo material is so interesting. I know the Michael Jackson comparison gets thrown around a lot with him. But i really do feel like if Michael was in his 20s now and was Korean, that's pretty much Taemin. A lot of K-Pop, from the industry side in how they train the artists, is inspired by how people like Michael were trained. And his artistic influence is apparent in a lot of K-Pop. But i feel like Taemin specifically really embodies it in a cool way that doesn't feel like he's straight copying him. I'm so curious, if he was still here, what Michael would think of K-Pop and people like Taemin and Kai and Jimin and others. I feel like he'd be really fascinated by K-Pop. Though i could also maybe see him being a little bothered by it since he is the blue print for a lot of it too. I feel like he'd at least appreciate the effort and work they put in though.

Something I thought was very interesting is someone told me that Criminal was about Stockholm Syndrome, in particular the case of Patti Hurst. In that context, Idea follows very well with the aftermath with how Hurst psychologically dealt with it by creating two versions of herself and excising that criminal part of her. When I viewed the whole trilogy in this lens, all three make perfect sense, but they can also be about other things. Knowing how intelligent & emotionally deep Taemin is, both are absolutely possible.

Taemin's discography is a masterpiece. He needs to listen the Japanese singles, like eclipse, into the rhythm, holy water, sayonara hitori, famous, and more because they're another treasure
