    Fun fact: Their manager/producer Key Kobayashi aka Kobametal (whom the girls call their "Dad") was the man behind the vision. He's an avid metalhead but also a fan of Jpop. He worked in the agency's Kid's Division where she discovered Su-metal at a young age. When he worked with Sakura Gakuin, the group where Su, Yui, and Moa came from, he thought of a heavy music club to be formed within the multiple sub-units in Sakura Gakuin. So, he basically formed BABYMETAL using the three, and from then on, everything was history.

      You're close Karl, but actually he heard Su sing and was amazed with the power in her voice and knew her voice was too powerful for just Jpop, so he literally created the whole Babymetal band around Su-Metal with Su-Metal being the focal point.

    You had a producer working at their company who was working with bands, he's a metal head. The company says: we need you to work at the kids division we need more people working on that. He basically knows nothing about working with these J-Pop 'idols'. But he's used to looking for talents and finding ways to bring out those talents. So he heard about this one girl who could sing really well and the existing project would end.He noticed she has talent, but her style is unusual, she always sings loud. So along the way he figured, what if this loud singing girl could fit with the loud music I like.. now no company would fund such a project, so Babymetal was started as part of a bigger project. And Babymetal kept growing and growing even without risky investing of the company and became it's own thing and got international attention and went viral a couple of times, and also bigger each time. The producer is called Kobametal now. And that singer is the lead vocalist, Su-metal.

Then you see them crush these huge venues like the Tokyo Dome, Budokan, Sonisphere, and other festivals with fans losing it by the thousands. It's mind blowing that these are teenagers on the stage, and now they are young ladies with 9 years of experience in the game. They are only going to get better with time.

    Great reaction guys! I'll just add a little to what others have said: Kobametal was blown away by how powerful Su's voice was for anyone, much less a little girl. He knew it would cut through the instruments, and that was the beginning. Her two best friends from Sakura Gakuin were Moa and Yui, and he added them. First they played to a backing track, singing live to recorded music. Then, actors were hired to mime playing the instruments at the shows. They dressed in skeleton costumes and you can see them in some early live videos. They are not playing. The girls are really singing, but the band "Babybones" is not playing.
    Then The Kami Band was put together. Kami Band means God Band, and they are the gods of their instruments, who are "manifested" on stage by the Fox God when Babymetal performs. They used to wear traditional white Japanese burial shrouds and corpse paint, and began doing the encores at the shows, following Babybones. Eventually, they took over completely and have been part of Babymetal ever since. They are exclusive to Babymetal, you will not see Kami Band playing any shows on their own. There is a video of them playing in a small venue together in regular clothes, but it was Takayoshi Ohmura's (one of the Kami guitarists) other band playing, the other guys from Kami Band (BOH the bass player, Mikio Fujioka (RIP), the other guitar player and Hideki Aoyama, the drummer) were there, and he brought them up on stage for a song.
    Tragically, Mikio Fujioka (RIP) had a terrible accident on New Years, 2017, and died in the hospital a week later.
    They now wear black robes. They still wear the corpse paint. They did a few shows recently wearing masks, but it was in homage to Slipknot's 20th anniversary. (They do that alot, give nods to different bands they like. Ask about the neckbrace when you see it!) Some people were worried that the masks were a new thing with the band, but I have already seen pictures of them onstage since then without them. The band itself is made up of the best musicians in Japan (actually the world if you ask me). They are all highly sought after studio and session musicians, and they occasionally have obligations elsewhere, so they rotate.
    When Koba put Babymetal together, the girls had never heard heavy metal!
    When Koba put the Kami Band together, he told them "Don't hold back because they are girls! Don't hold back because they are idols!"

    'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!! ' was one of their early hit songs.
    Even though the song is about a fifteen year old girl attending her first heavy concert, Su was only fourteen when the song was recorded.
    It's not biographical, but it is a song she could relate to. At that age she was performing on stage, rather than attending concerts.
    Both Yui and Moa got to take over on lead vocals for this song on shows that were close to their fifteenth birthdays.
    Those were also their first two European concerts.
    More recently, for both Su and Moa's 20th Birthdays, they've performed this one, with a small change in the lyrics from "15" to "20".
    Once again, for the two Birthday concerts in her home prefecture earlier this month, Moa took over lead vocals.

    Another great reaction, I love 'Headbanger' it's such a good song. icebalm has given you a (very) condensed version of how this all came about and whose vision it all was. What he hasn't said is that Kei Kobayashi (Kobametal) saw Suzuka Nakamoto singing with her previous pop trio Karen Girl's at their farewell concert (they sang songs for an anime and it was coming to an end so her trio was also ending) when she was about 10 or 11 (before she joined Sakura Gakuin). He had this idea for fusing pop and metal with a view to using the pop world to introduce more people in Japan to metal which was getting less and less air play or publicity, being forced more and more underground and stagnating with a shrinking audience.
    Kobametal saw the potential in little Suzuka, already an Idol with a couple of hit songs, with her unusually loud singing style (for a J-pop singer) and extraordinary stage presence to front this band. So when he was given the chance to put his idea into practice through the sub-unit clubs of Sakura Gakuin that was what he did, building and developing the whole thing around Su with her good (and tiny) friends Yui and Moa to provide backing vocals and to "dance around her like a pair of little angels".
    Nobody thought it would work, the talent agency Amuse provided virtually no extra funding for Babymetal (unlike the other SG sub-units who did get more backing), but they allowed Kobametal to have his pet project within the confines of SG. Against all the odds Babymetal gained a lot of attention and notoriety when their first couple of videos (especially Gimme Chocolate) went viral - so much so that Amuse had Kobametal write a business plan and proposal - and when Su graduated from SG in 2013 at the age of 15 Babymetal left SG with her to become a separate entity and a band in its own right.
    As a side effect of Babymetal becoming known around the world that aim of Kobametal to introduce more people in Japan to metal has actually worked, the classic metal bands and new Japanese bands are being discovered by a new generation - and a lot of Japanese bands are being found by metal and rock fans in the west whose first introduction to what Japan has to offer came through seeing Babymetal videos.
    You say you have one more Babymetal song to react to ... I (and I'm sure many others) would love to see you react to a whole lot more of their songs and performances.

      @Grington300 300 Nice wrap up!
      I'd just add that 'Gimme Chocolate!!' was part of their second wave of viral popularity.
      It had its debut at 'Legend 1997' in 2013, about nine months after Su graduated from Sakura Gakuin.
      The 'Gimme Chocolate!!' music video was posted the next year, around the time the first album was released (February 2014).

    • @rickwagner-
      @rickwagner- Před 5 lety +4

      @James K That's incorrect.
      Koba was familiar with Karen Girl's, and was planning to create BABYMETAL around Suzuka as far back as 2009 since that group was ending. He has specifically talked about this in interviews.
      Just because he is a big metal fan doesn't mean he was unaware of what was going on in the Kid's division of Amuse, Inc. That was part of his job.
      He literally mixed Idol/J-Pop with metal, so it's quite a stretch to say that he doesn't like Idol music.

  • @icebalm
    @icebalm Před 5 lety +15

    Hey Brian and Stan! Awesome reaction! So how BabyMetal came about is kind of a long story. The girls were part of the school themed pop idol group Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) managed by the Amuse Inc. talent agency. Sakura Gakuin often makes "sub units" kind of like school clubs, like baton twirlers, or newspaper, or cooking, etc. One of Amuse's producers, Kei Kobayashi (KobaMetal or Koba), is an old school metal head and saw talent in Suzuka Nakamoto (lead singer). Koba wanted to make a Heavy Music Club sub unit designed around Su's pop vocals. Members in Sakura Gakuin are supposed to leave the group when they "graduate" in keeping with the school theme. I don't think anyone expected BabyMetal to get this big, as even after all the members "graduated" Sakura Gakuin they kept going with BabyMetal and it is the only sub unit to have split off.

    Key Kobayashi had the vision. Koba saw Metallica in 90/91 and fell in love with metal, and is probably encyclopedic on all things metal today. Anyway, he saw Su in a pop group call Karen Girl's ~2008, and thought the power in her voice was wasted on pop, and thought up Babymetal. It took a while after the concept that he found himself working with Su, and he added Yui and Moa and he was able to get a single out of Babymetal. And the rest is history.
    Metal was not mainstream at all in Japan, and Koba once said he could not get metal done, but he could do Babymetal. Interestingly, the girls have a lot of input on the dance moves and the mix of the music.

The world is still not quite ready, you might come across some Metal elitists who are going to downvote your reaction and flame you with comments about how they are destroying Metal. Some people don't want to smile while listening to Metal, the only emotions allowed in Metal are anger and aggression. It's sad, really. But that doesn't keep us from having fun, and I wonder who will be better off in the end? :-)
    I have two more recommendations for you:
    The first is a performance you should watch if you'd like to see the most epic stage presentation ever. It's their intro song from 2018 called "In the Name of". Unfortunately, a reaction video with full audio and video would definitely get blocked. So you'd either have to heavily edit it or use a Link&Sync approach. But even if you don't do a video, you DO want to watch this, believe me! :-) www.dailymotion.com/video/x6h5yo6
    In case you are interested about their origin, the second recommendation would be a song called "Doki Doki Morning". It was their very first song they started with when they were still a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin (as has been explained in the comments). It's very far on the poppy side, so it would be interesting to see what you think about it. czcams.com/video/cirhQ8iLdbw/video.html

    A interesting side note to some of the comments made below, but when BABYMETAL was essentially conceived, none of the the girls really knew much about metal music at all...Clearly, the embraced that genre and in a way, have now made it their own in such an amazing way.

    Distortion, live at Downloads from the 2018 tour is a little more recent and shows another side to the group, after their lead guitarist passing and Yui absent due to health reasons.
    It shows the resiliency that this act has. Have a look and see how it transitions into this years tour and upcoming album.
    I find it quite interesting due to the similarities of other great rock bands in the past.

    This was the 2nd of 2 sold out nights at the Budokan Arena. The 1st night, during this song, Yui fell off one of the catwalks during the crowd participation segment. She fell about 7 feet and Suzuka and Moa had to finish the song without her. Yui returned to finish the show only minutes later in time for the next song! That’s a badass 14 year old! (Yui is the one with the chubby cheeks).💪🏻🤘🏻

    To answer Stan, this was all the vision of a man named Kobayashi, or "Koba-Metal." He's a music producer in Japan. He heard Su sing and decided that her voice was too powerful for any music other than metal. She would drown out the instruments of any other genre.

    I am sure your question of "whose vision is this" has been answered elsewhere, but just in case. The man's name is Key Kobayashi. He has more aliases than someone in the mafia. Kobametal and Profit of the Fox God, chief among them. He is the producer, manager, song writer in chief, and master mind of it all. It's his brain child, his vision. He picked the girls. He picked the musicians. He picked the lighting guy, the choreographer, sound guys, production managers, and probably the dude handing out towels in the bathroom. His peers have used the "genius" word in describing him. He's known to be militantly protective of the girls. They call him "Dad" and he's commented he views them like daughters. More than one third party has identified that his number 1 priority is the girls. All that said, the fandom has a love/hate relationship with the guy... with the "hate" part mostly undeserved.

    If you like BABYMETAL, you own it to yourself to check out Band-Maid .... Another Japanese group, all female hard rock band who play their own instruments; the Guitar, Bass, and Drummer all are multi instrumentalists with music degrees. The singer is amazing, and the back up singer/rhythm guitar and founder of the band does awesome harmonies and writes most of the lyrics.
    Here's a live performance that will give you an idea of their songs and how damn good they are ... these girls have not written a bad song yet, and there's nothing like them in any country on this planet .. the only problem with this band is having 50 favorite Band-Maid songs.

That being said if i was trying to explain to someone what heavy metal is, or tried getting them into heavy metal.. this would probably be the last thing id use on the list. To the credit of their management, they've been taken care of very well. Their formal education, the privacy of their personal lives, and things of that nature have been top priority throughout their careers so far. It wasn't made any secret to them that there would be hard work involved which would require determination, as well as self-motivation. They weren't forced into any of it. This was not an abusive, exploitative situation. If you have doubts about it, I'd suggest checking out their history.
