  • The following video compares the effects from 2 versions of the classic episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", called "Where Silence Has Lease.
On the left side you can see the effects from the Blu-ray version of the episode, on the right side you can see the same scenes taken from the DVD version of the episode.

It's amazing how much trouble - and cost - they went through to embellish the quality of the BluRay version. In most of the space shots, even the starfield was replaced. Great comparison. Thanks for sharing.

BIG difference in the mouth of the alien, it seemed more human in the DVD version, but way more homogenous to the overall form of the alien face in the blu ray version.

Both of the versions use the same elements which were filmed from a real actor, and then digitally distorted. But I also think that they distorted the head, mainly the mouth part TOO much in the Blu-ray version.

@@TrekkieChannel Some effects like phaser fire had to be redone from scratch using CGI. It looks like the same was done with the mouth here.

More inch marks instead of quotes on the title in the Blu-Ray. I think they made this mistake for every episode of season 2. As stated in a different comment, the shot at 1:30 is a CGI Enterprise because they couldn't find that original footage. Also the shot at 1:44 is just a still from the pass around the Enterprise from the opening credits. That was what was originally used and the Blu-Ray remaster team just recomposited it like with all the other shots, but the motion blur on the saucer shows up in HD.

Looks like they redid the Yamato scenes with CGI. The CGI is a crisper view of the ship but I like the ship in the DVD better.

I could be mistaken but I think the probe firing shot was replaced with CGI. Also the LCARS animation in engineering for the auto-destruct sequence looks redone (font).

I have noticed the ship looked better from season 3 on, seasons 1 and 2 it looked more animated vs. a being a real model.

Other than a slight color and sharpness enhancement, there's not much value to the blu-ray version. Interesting fact: blu-ray simply refers to the total disc storage capacity. That is, you can have a blu-ray disc with standard definition content. Make sure the disc says HD, if that's what you expect.

This isn't a simple regrade, and it's very much in HD. The Blu-ray releases are made from whole new scans of the original film elements, including any existing VFX components such as models, matte paintings, hand drawn animation, etc.
It's likely the most extensive and expensive remastering project in film & television history, and it's worth every cent
