Phrasal verbs are easy to understand. Everything you need is to know meanings of the prepositions what placed after main verbs. For example, the very phrasal verb "keep up" - keep is to hold sth or continue to do sth and preposition "up" is as teacher said is to increase/improve sth or it's some movement or direction - I climb up the mountain or I walk down the stairs. In this case the preposition UP points to direction of movement. Now let's return to the word keep up - Keep it up means Continue improving it. As you can see, I simply put together 2 meanings and got the new word. That way you can learn a lot of different phrasal verbs. If you know meanings of the preposition what's used in your phrasal verb, you'll be able to learn a lot of phrasal verbs
Besides the lesson itself, keeping up with your lecture is a good training for my listening conprehension skills. So, I'm gonna keep up! many thanks from Tokyo.
thanks a lot my dear new teacher you are the best teacher ever.you make the lessons easier..to me and I really appreciate that. greeting from Peru (Southamerica).
I cant get it, he is the kind of teacher who teaches a lot minute by minute, you dont get bored and your english is easily improved, so what are you complaining about? It is not that hard to get, What a exageration, folks
You are correct, but not by intuition. 'to stay up' can only be used as an active verb, meaning the subject does the action of 'not going to bed', 'to be kept up' is used in the passive here, meaning sb else does the action, which affects the subject. Used in the active form, it means that you do sthg to stop sb from going to bed. It's grammar, not just 'what sounds right'
Hello Teacher James, thanks for the lesson. I enjoy watching your videos because I learned a lot from them. If you don't mind, I would like to make a request. I am gathering different English accents from different English native speakers for my research. Would you mind recording another video for me? I would greatly appreciate it... I will provide a short script. This one... Please make a 2-3 second pause after each line. SCRIPT: I will begin now. I'm looking forward to meeting you. I'll call you in 10 minutes. I haven't received your email yet. I'm satisfied with my job. I'm supposed to see him tonight. We were just talking about you. What is your favorite food? Where have you been? How come you didn't come to the party? Thank you very very much! I look forward to your video. More powers to you!
NOT! - you ain't gettin' it. The idiom, "She kept me up all night long," is EXACTLY how it is used. (Refer to the AC/DC song which has a slight variation "You shook me all night long.")
Your lessons are really good......thanks for help us to learn English .....you keep me up learning English ..... could i say like this? Anyway.... thanks a lot
I am Beatriz and I like james´teaching very much, his pronounciation and entonation is really very impressing and he seems to be very funny whe he is techain something.
Hello, James. Are you sure the second part of a phrasal verb is always a preposition? Well, grammars tell us the second part is termed as 'particle', which can either be an adverb or a preposition. Now, when it's a preposition, it has to have an object. Please clarify.
One site worth considering for learning English is sunphrase(dot)com . The newly founded website has writing support system that enable to write quicker, HOW TO USE: Write here your key words of your sentence that you want to write in english (make sure that English language is choosen). E.g. like would => Then in the main window there will be displayed sentences with this key words.
Just amazing! Fun and challenging. To those who can't keep up with this lessons: there are many other videos where the teachers are politically correct, and speeeaaaaak ssssloooowwwwwww... like Disney English.
In my opinion keep up cannot be used as a substitute for stay up. An example of this would be, I stayed up all night because of the noise. Now compare this with the sentence I was kept up all night because of the noise. See, by intuition the second sentence does not sound as good as the first.
Sir , i have one question , i've learned a lot thanks to your videos , many of my friends ask me to translate some of their favorites quotes and more , and suddendly , one of them asked to me ''What's the difference among by ,to,for and from?''' , i get freeze , i use those words many times but i have no idea how to explain it , do you have a video about it ??
Hello James :) Your lessons are absolutelly AWESOME but may I ask you something? Are both sentences correct or is the second one wrong? Keep up the good work vs. Keep the good work up Your biggest Czech fan here ;)
uuuuuuuuuh why can't my old boring english teacher be like this teacher!? but somehow I could not concentrate on the grammar issue hehe..... very nice :)
Sorry but as a native speaker I really fund this particular video difficult to follow and I am amazed thet non native speakers understand - isnt it over complicating everything ?
huw140269 im not native but i understand everything and he seems to talk normally not fast although im not native at all (just lang at school) mostly i use Russian lang
dear teacher, so the TV series, " Keeping up with the Kardashians" means that one is trying to follow their life style? thanks for your interesting and funny classes greetings from Chile
good lesson...but i do not agree with the sentence "she kept me up all night"..somehow it doesn't make sense to me. I would rather say i stayed up all night or she made me stay up all night.
Ansur is correct, there is a crucial difference. "Stayed up" connotes an active decision on the part of the speaker/subject, whereas "kept up" implies a passive stance; "I stayed up to do my homework". "I was kept up by the loud music".
You're such a charismatic teacher! You'd better be an actor) Anyway, I wish I were as great teacher as you) Keep it up)
I'm sharing this with my students. Thanks for posting.
Thanks! I try.
You're the best teacher James!!
Really? Many negative coments saying they do not understand? I could keep up with this class. Thank you for the class. Well done!

thanks a lot my dear new teacher you are the best teacher ever.you make the lessons easier..to me and I really appreciate that. greeting from Peru (Southamerica).
I think the second option is also good because it's a passive form of the verb, where "noise" would also function as an agent complement.
I want to keep up with the English videos because you are a wonderful teacher.
Thank you a very good lesson and you explain it good
I cant get it, he is the kind of teacher who teaches a lot minute by minute, you dont get bored and your english is easily improved, so what are you complaining about? It is not that hard to get, What a exageration, folks

Nicely said. In particular, I like how you used the word Keep Up in this sentence
Thank you, sir! :D I find your videos very interesting and appealing. "Keep up" the good work!
Sorry guys, I have a doubt... In what time is the second sentence "she was kept up all night by the loud noise"?
@Whatever You want but how? Simple past is with subject +verb, and in that statement has 2 verbs, was and kept up, or I'm wrong? 😕😕
In my opinion keep up cannot be used as a substitute for stay up. An example of this would be, I stayed up all night because of the noise. Now compare this with the sentence I was kept up all night because of the noise. See, by intuition the second sentence does not sound as good as the first.
