Phrasal verbs are easy to understand. Everything you need is to know meanings of the prepositions what placed after main verbs. For example, the very phrasal verb "keep up" - keep is to hold sth or continue to do sth and preposition "up" is as teacher said is to increase/improve sth or it's some movement or direction - I climb up the mountain or I walk down the stairs. In this case the preposition UP points to direction of movement. Now let's return to the word keep up - Keep it up means Continue improving it. As you can see, I simply put together 2 meanings and got the new word. That way you can learn a lot of different phrasal verbs. If you know meanings of the preposition what's used in your phrasal verb, you'll be able to learn a lot of phrasal verbs

You are correct, but not by intuition. 'to stay up' can only be used as an active verb, meaning the subject does the action of 'not going to bed', 'to be kept up' is used in the passive here, meaning sb else does the action, which affects the subject. Used in the active form, it means that you do sthg to stop sb from going to bed. It's grammar, not just 'what sounds right'

Hello Teacher James, thanks for the lesson. I enjoy watching your videos because I learned a lot from them. If you don't mind, I would like to make a request. I am gathering different English accents from different English native speakers for my research. Would you mind recording another video for me? I would greatly appreciate it... I will provide a short script. This one...
Please make a 2-3 second pause after each line.
    SCRIPT:
    I will begin now.
I'm looking forward to meeting you.
I'll call you in 10 minutes.
I haven't received your email yet.
    I'm satisfied with my job.
I'm supposed to see him tonight.
We were just talking about you.
    What is your favorite food?
    Where have you been?
How come you didn't come to the party?
Thank you very very much! I look forward to your video. More powers to you!

Hello, James. Are you sure the second part of a phrasal verb is always a preposition? Well, grammars tell us the second part is termed as 'particle', which can either be an adverb or a preposition. Now, when it's a preposition, it has to have an object. Please clarify.

  • @ansur996
    @ansur996 Před 14 lety

In my opinion keep up cannot be used as a substitute for stay up. An example of this would be, I stayed up all night because of the noise. Now compare this with the sentence I was kept up all night because of the noise. See, by intuition the second sentence does not sound as good as the first.

"I stayed up to do my homework".
"I was kept up by the loud music".
