  • Today's mock test is with Violet, who has done around 23 hours of driving lessons and also has had some practice driving with family.
    She drives very well but as soon as we started the mock test, the nerves are kicking in. Violets overthinking everything and that leads to her making silly mistakes!

    Agree, mock tests are soo important!! I did 3 with my instructor and I improved with each one. It really makes you realise the areas you're weakest on when the instructor isn't prompting you. And gets those silly nervous mistakes out of your system! Passed my test first time with 5 minors which I honestly don't think I would have without doing the mock tests.

      Others may think mocks tests are so extra, but its actually very important for learners, as a way to humble them and keeps them away from being overconfident and lax drive style

      for me it actually doesnt seem that valuable but i can understand it helps some people, because its basicaly the same as clasic lesson driving, its just that now someone counts your mistakes and measures time, but the goal stays the same not to do any mistake and my instructors never hesitated to tell me right away what i efd up

      When I got my license in Germany quite a while back, I didn’t do a mock test and neither did any of my peers as far as I know. I don’t doubt that they can be useful for many people but that doesn’t mean everybody needs them. For once, as lessons progress and the learner makes fewer and fewer mistakes, the style may naturally evolve to resemble a mock test more and more. Moreover, not everybody gets nervous during exams, particularly if they feel confident enough about their abilities.

    I remember back when I did my test (over a decade ago - back in the three point turn and reverse around a corner days! 🙈), when my instructor used to tell me to pull up on the left I used to panic and think I had to do it there and then which I think is what Violet was doing! 🙈
    Mock tests are so, so important! They get you used to driving independently and getting used to having to deal with things on your own as your instructor isn't always going to be there to lend a hand. I really hated mock tests but when it came to my test I was so glad my instructor made me do so many of them!

    I know this might sound weird, but driving in the dark, icy winter made me better at driving. I'm a lot like Violet and worry so much about what I'm supposed to do or if I was too slow and what drivers behind me will think about me being slow. But as it's winter and it's pitch black making spotting pedestrians almost a game of death, the road is very slippery and the white snow makes looking out for signs almost impossible, not to mention days where it's raining cats and dogs on top of all if this. Another thing is timing the high beams while thinking about what I mentioned before. This forced me to take time and forget about what drivers behind would think about my driving, made me improve at spotting hazards and adjusting speed and steering. I have the test in 4 days and this video reminded me of all these things which made me more nervous, but at the same time thankful so I can be mindful while preparing.

    I would honestly say it depends on the individual. I struggled with anxiety personally as well as driving anxiety for months and months, so my instructor did not think it would be helpful to give me mock tests. He only gave them to students who believed themselves to be at a higher level than they were. I ca honestly say him doing this was so beneficial to me- I passed first time and I really do think taking mock tests would have done the opposite of reassuring me. Just a thought though, and I am aware for most people it would be helpful!

    • @Scottx125Productions
      @Scottx125Productions Před rokem +27

      I disagree with you. Anxiety isn't going to get better with people coddling you. My instructor pushed me every lesson to do things I wasn't comfortable with. Sure I was absolutely bricking it. But I learnt and got better, I got more comfortable as time went on. Did a bunch of mocks and a battery of lessons before my test and passed first time in one of the lowest pass rate areas in the UK. The number one thing when driving is confidence. If you're a confident driver you'll make far fewer mistakes compared to a nervous driver.

    Driving with parents is just terrible. They think they know it all, when in reality they learned to drive sometimes decades beforehand to a different standard and have hypocritical bad habits that you would never get away with now. But of course they know best, you end up taking those bad habits into your real lesson and your instructor be like wtf don't do that. Happened to me more than once.
    Even years later, long after you've passed your test, giving them a lift anywhere and they treat it like your first lesson. So I just don't bother anymore - their cars are nicer than mine and buses are available.

    The smoothest transition for a new driver is 1st year only driving an automatic and then moving to a full manual. This way in the beginning the cognitive load is only focusing on traffic and the surroundings, and then when that becomes second nature you transition to learning clutch and you can have all the focus on that while driving

      I dont agree. Manual teaches you to understand the car properly, how things like engine braking works, how the gears, revs and speed fit together, to learn how to co-ordinate your feet rather than just pressing stop and go. Unless there's a disability, or a similar reason why not, everyone should learn in a manual then switch to auto after passing if you prefer one. It's safer.

      @@Ljosisee, I get what you mean here, but I’ll have to kindly disagree with you. If you learn how the traffic works and flows with an AT when you switch over to MT you’ll get incredibly confused and your entire “flow” gets thrown out the window because you get too used to the comfort of not having to worry about shifting and clutching. During driving you learn the most during your first lessons, and if u get into a good rhythm while driving MT from the very beginning you’ll make your life a hell of a lot easier later during the learning procedure. At least in my opinion.

    I failed my first test for going over a kerb like that (4:39) on the right turn into a small narrow road for the test centre right at the end, so not sure how I feel about that only being a minor fault. In the end it's trivial though for this test. Right at the start she seems to not really slow down for the speed bumps and approaches the t junction with quite a bit of speed, braking quite late, and then focuses more observations on the left than the right, which is the direction of traffic that could hit her first

  • @leoniekoning1005
    @leoniekoning1005 Před rokem +2

    Okay, I will say with the roadworks and that car merging in, I do think the other driver was at fault. The obstruction is in their path so it would have been their responsibility to find a clearing to move over. They should've either sped up a bit more for an easier move or they should've merged in behind you guys as they did not have the right of way moving into your lane and they did not appear to have had the clearance to do so in the first place and so they did force their way into the gap.
    But this is just my humble opinion as a Dutch driver. 🤣

  • @colinjava8447

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 Před rokem +2

      As you travel further towards buildings in car parks the more cars are going to packed together. So an earlier space choice will have less dangers about it. Because we drive on the left in the UK swinging forwards into spaces on the right is a wider and therefore easier turn. You need to turn about ninety degrees into a space if you are not straight enough, have a good look around and when safe back up a little and move forwards to get straightened and within the original bay. You are not allowed to drive through a bay into the one beyond. You choose a bay and the examiner does not need to be told which one you are aiming for.

This would be "Awareness and planning" as the fault is not attitude more a competence issue due to inexperience particularly in observing and realising what is likely to happen next. It was a barn door situation to 99% of drivers who would not try and force up the inside.. At 16:40 we see a sign, four lanes with lanes 3 & 4 closing.
