  • A bone marrow transplant is a surgery that replaces your damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells. A stem cell transplant is another name for a bone marrow transplant. If your bone marrow stops working and does not create enough healthy blood cells, you may need a bone marrow transplant.
    Bone Marrow Transplant Types
    1.Allogeneic stem cell transplant.
    2.Autologous stem cell transplant.
Care for post bone marrow transplant:
After a bone or marrow transplant, your immune system is weakened, making you susceptible to infection. You should practice good hygiene and avoid ill individuals, places, and activities that might expose you to infection.
    Infections and their causes
Following a bone marrow transplant, the following infections are common:
Month one includes bacteria, fungi, and the herpes simplex virus.
Month 2 focuses on the cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
    * Varicella-zoster virus, bacteria, fungi, or a community-acquired respiratory virus in the third month.
*Allogeneic bone marrow transplants are more prevalent than autologous BMTs, especially in graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) patients.
    Infection detection.
*Taking your temperature is one of the simplest and most essential methods to identify indications of illness. Take your temperature twice a day and record it.
    Infection prevention
•These limits should be followed for six months by autologous transplant recipients. Follow these guidelines as long as you're on maintenance medicine.
Allogeneic transplant recipients should adhere to these limitations while on immunosuppressive drugs and with the central line in situ.
    Avoiding environmental exposures
    • Pay close attention to hygiene
    • Prevent infections transmitted by direct contact
    • Prevent infections transmitted by direct contact and respiratory transmission
    • Prevent respiratory infections
    • Prevent pet-transmitted infections
    • Water safety
    • Travel safety
    • Vaccinations
    Diet and other lifestyle factors
After your bone marrow transplant, you may need to adjust your diet to stay healthy and to prevent excessive weight gain.
Your dietician and other members of your transplant team will work with you to develop a healthy food plan that matches your needs and fits into your lifestyle. Your dietician can also recommend foods to help you manage chemotherapy and radiation side effects including nausea.
