Ex.: "saru" (JP: monkey)
- sah/roo*: wrong

- sah/doo: not quite

This. It's a matter of tongue placement and then experimenting to find how hard you need to breathe in order for the tongue to vibrate.

I think keeping the back of your tongue as flat and against the back of the throat as much as possible can help. I tried feeling it out, as I can roll my R's without much thought and that's kinda the best advice I can give. I do see a lot of people saying you need to sort of breathe it out, but it's more keeping the tip of your tongue as loose as possible while sort of funneling the air from the back of your throat - with the back of the tongue sort of flat against it - roiling down and allowing it to flip your tongue's front as easily as possible. The trick is definitely using your breath, but not a whole lot; doing it right, you can continually roll the R with the exhalation for a very long time.

I was able to fix my rhotacism early on, but still I struggle with rolling Rs. My rolled Rs still sound like Ws so I have to speak my native tongue like an English dude does. It's so cringe. 😂
