- Yes, another Lars parody! This time, i'm jumping ahead to the future and predicting what's in store for live performances.
I'm a big fan of Lars and he is one of the drummers who made me a drummer. He just plays the songs however he wants all the time. These videos are funny because it's true.

Found this cool read:
Lars keeps bad time. Well, humans keep bad time. There are multiple graphs of great drummers like Phil Collins, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Ringo Starr (don’t get me started-he’s awesome) and so on, and whenever people played without a metronome, their timing varied greatly. Nicko MacBrain of Iron Maiden went so far as to say that the reason why Maiden’s material sounds so alive in the studio is because they eschew metronomes. This was in the 90s. They may use metronomes now; I have not kept up with their newer music.
When most people see a band they love, they don’t care about accuracy. Even when I am watching say Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, or Eric Harland, I don’t care about their technique as much as I care about how their music makes me feel. When most people go to see Metallica, they want to have their asses kicked by powerful riffs and the aural equivalent of a sledgehammer. This is a band that wanted to name their first album Metal Up Your Ass. Lars’s drumming is apposite for that.
Lars’s fills are unimaginative. This is not true. What they are is simple. But I would argue that it takes great imagination and willpower to not play certain things. For example, in the intro to “Sad But True”, Lars plays the simplest linear fills, and the third fill (which is traditionally the wildest one) is just him hitting floor toms and the snare in 2, 4, etc of the beat. Any drummer in this situation would have broken out into triplets. Rush fans would maybe play a herta, jazz fans would maybe play a fast single-stroke fill or the kind of thing that Billy Cobham once described as “a pile of trash falling to the ground” (which sounds awesome). But Lars kept it straight. He resisted a universal drumming impulse to serve the song. He repeatedly plays the simplest of fills to great effect. He’s particularly good at intros, for example “Frayed Ends of Sanity” and “Harvester of Sorrow” and (to use an example outside the three albums I mentioned) Metallica’s cover of Holocaust’s “The Small Hours”. But look at the way he plays the two or three large fills during the big guitar solo in “…And Justice for All” or toward the end of “One”. Dave Lombardo would have blistered the kit with his hands, Raymond Herrera would do something crazy with his feet, but Lars took a back seat and played what Kirk Hammett’s guitars demanded. He repeatedly does this. Look at his fills in 2 x 4 and tell me they’re not integral to the song. You can take any Metallica song and find him doing this.
If you want to see him showing a dynamic range, listen to his drumming in “Hero of the Day” or “Until It Sleeps”. His playing in “Hero of the Day” stands up against any of the great heavy drummers from Load’s time. Take Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days” or “Slaves and Bulldozers” and tell me Lars didn’t do as much for the “Hero” that Matt Cameron did for those songs.Lars is predictable. I think all of Metallica is predictable, and unless you’re listening to someone like John Zorn, most music is predictable. We listen to music to be reassured. Do you think Tool is less predictable than Metallica? Do you think B. B. King would ever play a solo where he wouldn’t hold a note for five seconds and let the vibrato (forgive me if that’s not the correct term) hover in the air?? I mean, Metallica did try to change their sound with Load. They did it, and they produced an amazing album. And look at how people are still reacting to it, 20 years later.
That being said, Lars does move in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. One of the things that surprise me is how he didn’t hit his ride cymbal at all during Justice, Metallica, and Load. And starting from like, I don’t know, Ride the Lightning or whenever until Load, he never uses his foot on the hihats.
With the two most inconsequential, randomly selected exceptions. Ever since I heard these two things, I’ve thought about how everything else he did must be a conscious decision too.
Exception 1: in the background to the intro on “Harvester of Sorrow”. He actually keeps time on the hats with his left foot and then takes it off to move it to the bass pedal and play that really badass double bass fill. Which I’ll bet you didn’t notice.
Exception 2: He does a hihat bark on the 1 of the beat once each time during the chorus in “…And Justice for All”. I don’t know why he does it. I’ve played it for people who’ve only ever noticed after I pointed it out. Nobody ever noticed, nobody cared. I think it adds to the song, but it’s such a minor thing that if you took it away, most everybody would never notice. But Lars crafted his drum line with such care that he put that in. Why?? I have no idea. But I’m not Lars.He hits cymbals on 3 with the snare way too much. HELLS YEAH HE DOES!! And it’s awesome. That’s one of his idiosyncrasies and I find it charming. But Lars also plays a more complex cymbal game than everybody else. Look at the way he builds up the cymbal work in “Shortest Straw” between the verses and you’ll see he’s subtly (insofar as Metallica can be considered subtle) building on each one with one or two extra hits. Same goes for his bass drum work. All rock drummers build up their fills so that there’s a relationship between the fills going into the choruses etc. But Lars paints such a sparse picture that he does this with every note. To use an art analogy, since Lars collects so much of it: if you go in expecting Van Gogh, you’ll be disappointed. Lars is more like his fellow Dane Piet Mondrian, and Justice is his Broadway Boogie Woogie.

Btw I fucking love Lars :D
great comment!
Josh Steffen Thanks, thought so too :) I think Lars has a lot of heart, which is probably what I love most about him. Cherish the signed sticks he sent me. :)
He did hit the ride cymbal on Load though, in quite a few songs like Bleeding Me, Until it Sleeps, or even Hero of the Day. About Hi-hats... He had his foot on them during St. Anger album, in Shoot Me Again and All Within My Hands.
aeronatasha Lars is a musician, like really, people only look him up like the simple drummer that doesnt do fills nor is fast , but he arranges all metallica songs, he gives direction to every album , and we can clearly see that in the making of footages, many say metallica should hire a new drummer on pair with Lombardo, but that is dumb, it will stop being metallica, unless lars keept being the mind behind their music and direct them.
I don't know if you're wearing the beanie because you're cold or because Lars always wears them haha
Amoeba Rider He's channelling his inner Rob Scallon
Amoeba Rider Since when does Lars wear a beanie?
Ryan Fields Are you serious? Look at their Instagram... I'm 90% sure he wears them to cover up a big bald spot
Amoeba Rider Oh I don't know. I just went to a Metallica show in August in Minnesota and he wasn't wearing a beanie. And I've been to a show of theirs in 2009 as well and I don't think he was wearing a beanie.
I'm currently lied in a hospital bed waiting for surgery and 06:35 fucking killed me hahaha!
ppl in the other beds are looking at me laughing my tits off haha
Good luck!
hope it went well!
Josh Steffen all good thanks dude!
Newbport all good man 👍
I'm confused, why do you have a ride setup? :)
PS are those Promark sticks?
RIGHT? this vid was wrong as soon as he wasn't riding the China
Ryan Lestage CONFUSION
I see I was to late to make the joke.
I laughed so much when you kept hammering the snare near the end.
Needs more snare fills and random kick patterns
haha ok I've got to past 3 mins and the snare fills have started......awesome!
Dude you are hands down one of the greatest drummers out there. Not because of one thing like your crazy double bass speed. But your drum sound and your technique. Dyers Eve was insane man. Thanks for all the badass videos. I'm glad someone understands what Lars really does!
+Nick Korte ;)
Still too much variation for a stage Ulrich ;D
Ok, that snare part at the end made me laugh out loud.
Facial expressions are almost perfect, just stick out your tongue a little more and you can perfectly mimic Lars.
Needs more wah
Petrva Definitely
jon hely yeah he is, he needs more flute
Imagine a drum wah, I tried that by plugging a portable kit into my pedal intro my amp and it was very loud and harsh for some reason
I find this too complex for Lars.
not at all. He is a great drummer, has his own style. Doesn't always sound the same. This tour his leg work really improved
On a scale of 1 - 10, your Lars Ulrichness rating is as following:
Reversed left hand stick: 0/10
Ride cymbal on your kit: 0/10
Unnecessary and out of context fills: 9/10
Crash in the next bar alone with snare: 10/10
Facial expression/body language: 3/10
Total: 22/50
You have failed the Lars Ulrichness test, you need to improve.
Joking haha, great work! I enjoy your videos a lot!
This is great! You are an awesome drummer, and I'm pretty sure Lars would be pretty proud and laughing his ass off with your videos man. Keep up the good work!
I went to their most recent live show in Atlanta, and a lot of the things you did/added/changed he actually ended up doing on this song. Pretty accurate, man. Also, enjoy the rest of your content and covers. Keep up the good work!
I was waiting for you to do this, great performance!!!
amazing snare sound. your mixing is getting better every day
Name of this one is the best of Lars parodies so far
I was waiting for a ridiculously long snare roll but I couldn't help laughing when it came :D
Fck yeah bud!!! Enjoyed every second of this! I just purchased a 6-piece Ddrum set and sold my digital kit. Setting up this weekend. This will be one of the first ones I play. Great job!
The cap and Popeye-taking-a-shit facial expressions really sell it!
brilliant as usual!! keep it up man you rockk
LOL that was so funny! You made LARS 1000% at the end. hilarious!
yet another great video josh keep them coming
You just have to make all the wacky faces that he does, and you've nailed it!!!
hahaha That last snare roll dude.. great video!
Awesome! You keep the right elbow high on the hi-hat and the angry faces are spot on! And great playing too :)
Holy shitt josh... you fucking nailed it. You're one of the best drummers on this planet in my opinion!!!!! Rock on!
Are you teasing us with that guitar in the background? ... ;)
+TheDyerWolf yes
Josh Steffen You saucy minx
Ty for the belly laugh at the end! I needed that!
This is amazing! Love it
macht mir immer wieder freude dir beim spielen zuzusehen. bist immer voll dabei. ohne schnörkel und ohne dich selbst zu verstecken. ;-)
Josh, that link you provided of his Call of ktulu performance from 2011, was brutal to listen too.. Lars starts off the song like its the crescendo, the the apex of the song, .. he makes no sense.. its a far cry from the brilliant performance he had when they did it in 1999 at the S&M concert.
that performance is the funniest shit ever. ulriching it up right outta the gate. Most of the dumb shit i do comes right from that performance.
that hat killed me :D Great job as always!
Priceless man haha .. well done ! Really enjoy your drumming .. fuckin wild man and very precise !
Another great cover keep them coming
these are getting better and better... especially now you have included the Beanie as well. It really adds to the performance :)
Kick ass as always mate.
Still waiting for Killing Fields...
lmao. Ah, great. Good job, Josh. Digging the new record? I sure am. Btw, the continued playing at the end of songs is so much in Lars' DNA that he even does it in the studio when writing a record (can't make this up, check out the Making of ManUNkind video - he does it in there). He just cant help himself hahaha.
I got seriously good laugh at this one! This is definitely your best Lars impression yet!
I still absolutely adore the sound of your drums man!
they're improving!
I fucking love this song lol this is pure gold
loving the hat BTW Josh! 👍
KSCJohno #Metal4Life He looks "bad-ass"!!
KSCJohno #Metal4Life representing the beanie gang
only the best drummers do parodys of other (famous, cough, cough) drummers. im glad I heardof you via a CZcams parody rather than an album you worked on! great job! bet if I ever click on anything youre involved with, itll be more hobbyist parodys like this as opposed to anything YOU created. keep it up!
awesome as usual my brother! \m/
Not enough snare rolls.
Awesome fills...love it.
Saw Metallica on my birthday July 5th in Orlando with my 11yr old for his first concert. You nailed it note for note, this is exactly what he did.
JD Eger i doubt it!! Lars cant pull this off!
You've even got your arm at a 90 degree angle to your body when you're playing the hihat xD perfect
haha that hi-hat arm positioning is spot on
All you need is slicked back hair and a sweat band and you pretty much nailed it
This has got to be the best Lars Impression that beanie Killed it yes!
Hahahah Josh :D These put a smile on my face!
That beanie was a nice touch haha
I've watched alot of this dudes uploads. Lars could only hope to play that song as well. Josh you are one badass drummer.
So amazing!! i Love to Watch your vids🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼Greetings from Germany✌
i like the Lars beanie
Insect on Acid Lol same. Imo Lars' beard is totally badass, he just cracks me up in general :)
this is hilarious love it bro \m/
LOVED THIS SO MUCH!! 😀
Those hihat hits are are so damn accurate haha! Great job!
Just saw the Korea show and Lars actually played it correctly!! It was so good!
Great work
hey josh, I love your work man, keep it up!!
I know the chances of you seeing this are pretty slim, but in case you do, could you please do a cover of whichever song from St. Anger? If you could even set the snare to sound the same as in the album it would be fantastic, it will be freaking awesome to see you play!!!
Thanks again for the great videos and keep on rockin'! \m/
This dude is so fucking amazing.
Headbanging the whole time watching this.
josh i've been watching you for some time now you are a great drummer,,,,I wish i had a drummer like you I'm a bass player you rock!!!
+TheShagdog1313 ;)
This was amazing I'm dying over here lol
omg, this was so hard to play along with the guitar!! ^^ I never knew what line to follow! James and Kirk must have some serious skills to be able to follow Lars! =D
Hahaha that's true, he plays the songs live however he wants. And the hat is totally necessary xD
I don’t know why but this sounds awesome!
that is hilarious... facial gestures and all . awesome.
that drum sounds amazing !
Lars is almost 53 years old. I like to see these younger drummers talk shit when they get that old, if they even last that long as a drummer.
Arthur S Neil Peart and Mike Teranna dude. . .
Nicko McBrain is over 60 and is technically MILES ahead of Lars. There's no excuse.
lookat mikkey dee dude !
If you stay dedicated and continue to practice the instrument then age isn't a factor
Dave Lombardo is 51 years old.
So fucking Creative, i love it! I wish i could drum as you
I really hope Lars watches this and plays it live like this I think you would shit your shit your pants seeing as how he is one of the drummers that inspired you to pick up a kit
Not enough snare!!! We need more snare!! (Love the beanie)👏👏👏😂😂😂
So im wanting to learn to drum... n when i hear this song on the radio i keep thinkin its double bass pedal but when i see the video its not... whats the best way to tell the difference between double bass and what he was using?
Listen to the bass drum and how it sounds. During the tom roll you'll still hear bass drum maintaining its pulse. The toms dont have the same amount of attack and low end.
Well u definitely got the look of how he always seems to be at his maximum when he plays anything
thats what I've been waiting for
I think your secret to playing drums has something to do with those funny faces. I'm walking around all day with my lower jaw sticking out and my drums skills are already improving ! :)
play Rush- Tom Sawyer
micheba Oliveira Lars sawyer
nice touch with the hat and what guitar is that in the background i like it
Nice touch!
My back hurts just watching you haha.
Those toms are so good.
Should the day ever come when Lars can't do a gig, Metallica NEEDS to get you!!!
lol, i see you on basically all the metallica videos
Shamic Entertainment Ha, I do visit them quite a bit.
Fonzy Brookestone The day that never comes.
"Ooh Lars you're such a meme." Jared Dines
You took my favorite song from the record and improved it. Will there be a drum only version? This might be the only song I try to learn on the drums this year.
nice stuff buddy.
This is great!! again, amazing stuff. Highlight of my week coming onto your channel! Have you ever watched some of Parkway Drive's drummer live performances (espically earlier stuff) his power and stamina reminds me almost of Lars. Would love to hear a For Whom The Bell Tolls in a metalcore drum style, I think it would work so well.
Amazing! and btw love that you added the black bean he always have nowadays
hey josh, whats up man. hey listen i wanna star doing my own coves, tell me how do i do this, tell what you use, how you get the dreamless tracks, and how do you sink them with the video.
thanks bro... keep up the good work
+marco aurelio audio recorder, video recorder. Software for both, syncing the audio with a drumless track found on CZcams, or the normal track(which i usually do) and then sync the audio with the video. Upload to CZcams. It's a tedious but enjoyable process with experience.
ok thanks
hey Josh, how do you remove the original drum track from the recording??
You even have the same beanie that Lars wears... Im done, this is so well done, haha. :D
Broken stick @ 4:32 haha
Funnily enough he ended up playing it almost identical to the album live
amazing!
I really want to play Like you.
congratulations! you are amazing
+J.C. Marccs thanks!
Hey Josh, I was wondering what's the best mic placement when you're recording drums?
+xVIPgaming i don't know yet. Definitely not what I'm doing. haha
+Josh Steffen lol, looks like you're going in the right direction though.
