Considering its 1st grade, I can see you using those colored squares on rug for students during morning meeting, small group or maybe a whole group lesson. So I'd make it wide (not to the wall) put a shelf under board and put your STEM bins on that shelf because I'd assume you use those for morning time. My son was just in 1st and they did a lot of reading centers but had STEM bins for early finish.
