So here's an exploit that wasn't mentioned. In early Kunark on live, you could do a /who search for named mobs to check if they were up. You could do that for anything, like Quillmane, Vox, Naggy, etc etc. Just type /who Name_of_mob and they would show up on the search as a player in the zone.
Story time. I was in Dreadlands with two friends, looking for the dread widow. By clearing the PHs and doing /who a_dread_widow, eventually it popped up on who as something like a_dread_widow_43, 1 player found in zone. We knew the dread widow was up, but we couldn't find it. Assuming it was under the ground, we called a gm. A gm eventually arrived and confirmed that it was in the ground. We asked the gm to bring it up for us and they agreed to do so. While the gm was doing that, I was continually checking /who to see if it was still up.
Then the unfortunate thing happened. I typo'd the who command as a say command, and the GM, who was visibly standing next to us, witnessed me typing /say /who a_dread_widow. I break out into a cold sweat. My friends in group chat are furiously asking me WTF I'm doing. A long silence passes. The GM says nothing to me and I say nothing to them. After several minutes, which were probably not required solely to bring the spider above ground, The spider is brought above ground and the GM leaves, saying nothing about my typo.
The next patch, the exploit no longer worked. I was not banned or suspended for this. They probably knew about it to some extent, but I still feel guilty to this day.

It used to be, shortly after the Kunark expansion, that Necros could feign death and go afk in a spawn spot, and their pets would infinitely defeat the spawns, resulting in great afk experience for the Necro masters. I remember this being nerfed, and the great disappointment from my Necro friend that this tactic could no longer be used.

I can't believe no one mentioned cheese. That was possibly the biggest plat exploit in EQ history. Shadowhaven wouldn't stop crashing from people doing that simple combine to vendor the result. (Cost was like 8 copper but vendor paid 1 plat or something crazy like that). No one mentioned cash drops being nerfed midway through almost every expansion either. Oh and Flynn's kinda wrong. Buffs weren't hard level capped until late Luclin. They tried to level cap the single spells but the group spells still hit. I remember level 1s getting KEI (or "C3" on some servers). KEI was a Luclin boss drop and most people couldn't get it until well into Luclin (not too many "casual guilds" eating Gravel Rain or Feeblemind). I thought it was cool how the entire EQ player base all hated the community manager (Gordon "Abashi" Wrinn) because he was SO arrogant and didn't even know what the players were even talking about.

    • @Remianen
      @Remianen Před 2 lety +1

@@bubbles_7910 It was early Luclin and primarily based in Shadowhaven. You could make cheese that sold to vendors for more than its cost. As you might expect, that led to lots of bots parked at the vendor making SH a laggy mess. I'm pretty sure it was the food vendor two doors down from the port-in spire (on the right). Friend of mine says it was a 10 copper combine that sold to vendors for 1 gold.

Hello sir. Thank you for using my video in this, I'm super proud to be in this video. This is Gorbie87 AKA Shadowdinah from p99 Blue. That clip was an uncontested Dain pull. I am Ally to Dain and I used a level 1 pet to pull him to the entrance. The pull was made clean by training everything to the bridge and having someone from my guild "tag" Dain out of the train. (we used instant clicky items like wooly spidersilk nets, etc) and I exploited the pathing to make the train go back into the castle to give our guild time to "tag" Dain cleanly into our camp. It was more pathing manipulation than pet manipulation.

In 2005 during the depths of darkhollow beta, SOE accidentally patched the Beta server tradeskill merchants onto the live servers for about 12 hours. It meant every ultra rare tradeskill item became purchasable in POK. The cleanup was a giant fustercluck, involving nuking character's inventories, and rollbacks that went on for over a week.
Once in the 2004-2005 era, Mass Group Buff was bugged for a few weeks so the cool down didn't engage when you used it. Beastlords could roll their HOT/MOT/EOT spell as an MGB nonstop during raids.

  • @michaelroyal9375

That is not all you could do. My husband's BL got ahold of some Puppet Strings, took it to Oasis, charmed a little bitty puma, leveled it to 60 and I put druid buffs on it... sow, DS, skin, regen. We zoned, came back and cried laughing at all the chaos that caused. "I'm level 30 and it's killing me!" or when it died, "what it drop?" ... "cat meat and a medium pelt." Very soon thereafter they changed the BL pets.

And when you cast the pet buff that makes it higher level it also had the effect of complete healing the pet. You'd essentially play the lower end of the game as a cleric to your pet. The dev's didn't nerf it for months. I suspect this was done on purpose to allow the population of max lvl BLs to grow quickly

  • @Brian-zi5wr

The number of exploits we found while playing on Phinny was crazy. The entire TLP experience has been greatly altered by these exploits. Some have already been mentioned, some others: People figured out how to claim armor bundles (Defiant Gear), Illusions, and buff mounts in Luclin era. My cleric had his 1000ish Mana and 15 mana regen mount that never got caught and reverted. When OoW was released the leveling process took less than 30mins to cap, we found a Pooka in I believe it was Tipt that hit for Deathtouches. We would charm this mob and the room prior to this had a full spawn of mobs that you can 1 shot and go back 1 more room kill an NPC which respawned the entire room, rinse and repeat. The GM's took the zone down while we were in the process of leveling, thankfully we had already hit level 69. SK's had mortal coil which had been nerfed but we found out that there was a monster mission with a 2hand sword with an insane ratio (like 6-7 expansions stronger) that we were able to get outside the MM and equip it on our normal SK. This didnt make for the happiest Pally's getting wrekt on the meters. With this weapon and the need to level to 85 I think, we found a quest in Loping Plains that would spawn like 15-20 mobs and could be infinitely spawned over and over. Well an SK with Mortal Coil, that 2 hander and a support group could kill these orcs by the hundreds at a time, max level was hit in about 45mins. In Luclin Emp SSRA could be pulled to the zone in, negating the need for keys and CC on the adds. In VT you could skip the entire zone and go right to AHR by dropping through the roof. You could pull mobs across the map using Mage Bolts through walls and just sacrificing the Mage. The list goes on and on.

Oh yes, having an enchanter haste and charm a player in their party that is armed with a weighted battle-axe destroyed mobs. When charmed you still would get the damage of the weighted battle axe and all the bonus damage due to the high delay but your actual melee speed was just the default NPC speed which meant you hit like a Mack truck every second and a half or so. If you managed to get in a few double attacks or a repost after a double attack....dropping mobs like they going out of style.

Speaking on item level restrictions, some did exist even before Luclin, funny enough the item you used as an example Narandi's Lance was one of those (so maybe not the best example of level restriction items after Velious era! ) Though that said, a somewhat spooky timing of me watching this video, is that I had been playing on a emulated server that had custom tuned rates to make it more solo/small party friendly. Because it's quasi -classic (aimed at classic though goes up to beyond Luclin and Planes of Power), it has level restrictions items. However there is one item, I aimed to get myself which was a Narandi's Lance. I was speaking to someone in-game about the likely hood of gathering people for the Ring War, and we plan to do it this weekend.

Where you could loot anyone else's corpse by making an alt with the first 4 letters of their name, and giving yourself permission to loot their corpse. ... You'd then drag their corpse to a slightly different location, take all their non soulbound gear... and they would petition a GM, and get it all back. not a nerf i guess... but a fix. Pet Cannibalization nerf was big one. As a mage you used to be able to summon a pet with good mana saving armor and abilities (which means it costs less) then reclaim the pet and get back the FULL mana for that pet, which was effectively a boost. That was the basics.
In practice, you would suspend your current pet, the cast a new one... eat it. Cast a new one... eat it. Keep doing that until your mana was full then Un-suspend the main buffed+equipped pet and start fighting again. It was AMAZING.
There was also a major exploit with SHRINK plus an lllusion item like Skeleton illusion. You could shink, get very close to a wall/door... then turn into a full size Skeleton and walk right through the wall/door. Great for locked doors. That no longer works.

Kind of surprised you didn't mention damage shield Power Leveling. DS's were considered neutral damage so you would get one high level char with a DS (Ranger/Druid/Mage/Bard) aggro a handful of mobs with a high level (non-damage) spell/song to keep aggro and have the low level character do at least 1 point of damage. The high level char would then spam sit to allow them to get hit (since AC/avoidance are excluded while sitting). Let the DS do all the damage and the lower level char would get the XP. Could easily powerlevel a lvl 1 to 30 in Kurns in about 30-45 minutes. 1-50 could be achieved in a few hours.

I remember one exploit that happened somewhere around November of 1999. There used to be a banker in Befallen. One day a bug/glitch cropped up which made the banker in Befallen exchange copper for plat on a 1:1 ratio. Turn 10pp into 1000 copper, then take that 1000 copper and when placed back into the platinum the banker would turn the 1000 copper into 1000 platinum. A few servers economy was completely wrecked, a few players got banned, and the banker in Befallen was removed.
It is very difficult to find any information about this bug, but I remember as a new player trying to level up in west commonlands and seeing in chat as it was discovered.

    My best exploit was z-axis.
I was a 50-something rogue, and I snuck into KC while VS was being raided.
So you get to his chamber, and everyone is on the ground floor, but I'm a few floors up, looking down on the group and his corpse. My x and y coords put me next to VS's corpse, but my z coords were forty feet in the air....
    but z-axis didn't matter then. >:)
They spent so long deciding who would get what, the corpse went public, so I scooped everything I could, and snuck-crawled out.
The shouting was legendary! Had to put that toon into cold storage for a few months before I could bring her online and sell those Tolan's Darkwood Greaves. Good money, that. ;)

Biggest exploit I remember was that you could build AA abilities into hotkeys. I played a Cleric on Erollisi Marr server and when Omens came out they introduced the "hammer" spam pet line for clerics. You could set a hotkey to trigger Mass Group Buff and then the hammer. The hammer would spawn but both abilities would "fail" to cast. I solo'd General Reparm in the Plane of Fire as a level 70 cleric by just chaining hammers as fast as I could hit the button at him since you could work your way around the recast time.

There was a pet specific agility buff that rolled out at the beginning of Gates of Discord. It was cast by druids as I recall. It allowed pets to crit every hit, often for multiple times regular damage, so a pet could do roughly 20 times their standard damage. It was in the game about two months before it was rebalanced. Not a glitch, per se, just a badly balanced buff that could be abused mercilessly.

19:30 There is more to this... I had a cleric friend in Afterlife and got to watch AL take down The Avatar of War a few times (Afterlife's first and second AOW kills, I know the history where Legacy of Steel technically killed him first by cheesing him with mezzed city giant vendors). My main was a top tier warrior on another server and my cleric friend liked showing off Afterlife's awesomeness whenever I wasn't raiding...
Anyways, when AOW was at like 35 percent Weihung (pretty sure that was his name) who was their warrior MT got taken down, and I was dumbfounded when Afterlife's top monk (forgive me I can't remember his name) stepped in to tank in place of another warrior. The monk lasted long enough on AOW long enough Weihung back up, buffed, and ready to finish the fight... I was so stunned by this (knowing all I thought I knew about the game) that I could see why they were the best guild in EQ in that era... No disrespect to Fires of Heaven or Legacy of Steel intended... That all being said, no monk should have been face tank the Avatar of War for 2-3 minutes at that time... Even if their monk had every best bit of gear in every slot at that time.

The exploit that I miss the most was the ability to clip through locked doors that had no keys to them. What I would do as a ranger was to change myself into a wolf (or shrinking yourself twice also worked) then run against the door. While you're still running you would then click off the wolf effect and you'd be through the door. After this was nerfed the only way through these doors was to get a rogue or bard to pick the lock. I actually rolled a rogue just for this purpose. As it turned out though, I liked the rogue class a lot so it wasn't a total waste of time.

The druid to rogue conversion story sounds familiar. Sort of. I started a rogue during the Luclin era, and by PoP it was my main. But it wasn't really the port changes that did it, it was just that druids were significantly less desirable for their group roles than clerics and shamans. The port changes didn't bother me at all--I was way past caring about porting for cash. My rogue added far more cash farming capability than my druid doing ports anyway--just tank with the rogue and have the druid on a second box healing and buffing. I farmed enough plat on the cyclops island in OOT while leveling up my rogue to equip him for raiding using bazaar gear.

  • @apointtomake1517
    @apointtomake1517 Před 9 měsíci

Earthshaker nerf was pretty big, but was not explained correctly. First, a weapon can't proc from Riposte (never could), so his explanation was wrong. A warrior would need the AA Called "Rampage" it would swing your primary weapon once, hitting anything that was around you within a certain radius. The way it really worked is you needed to be "slowed." due to the way procs worked, having below a certain attack speed would make your weapon proc every swing. So, you would first need to duel a shaman, and have them slow you. Next, someone would pull the entire zone, like Plane of Fire, they would run by you and when the pack was on top of you, you would pop your Furious Discipline (Ripostes all melee) to protect you, then hit your Rampage AA. The Rampage AA would make your weapon hit every mob in that pack; 40+ mobs. Now, because you were slowed, every mob that was hit also made the weapon proc. So a 40+ mob pack would have every mob hit with that proc 40+ times. The nerf they came up with is a weapon can only proc on the mob you have targeted. Thus nerfing it into non-existence.
The biggest exploit / nerf was one where raid guilds would bypass the raid lockout by letting alts finish off the boss and taking the lockout, then getting re-invited to get loot without a lockout. Would be funny to see some guilds in a raid zone for 6 hours. People complained about it when they had a ton of weapon drops and it was mathematically improbable for all of them to have it in a few weeks. One guild was caught, and it was nerfed and they got a week ban for it.
Also, there was a time where people would Sell mission tasks, where you would get invited to the group while in the guild lobby and then they would complete the mission, and you would get the full experience. That was huge.... It was nerfed as well.
