Clean the minis by removing all those mold lines / bumps with a blade or even the back of the hobby blade for smoother surface, so the contrast paint / speed paint doesnt build arround those defects of the plastic.

Never got into Contrast or Speed Paints... I just kept going with what I knew.
But my kid bought a Star Wars Legion starter set... And man did I not feel like spending hours on those B1s. His first minis to paint too.
Looked up how other people went about powering through those, and ended up just buying Army Painter's Pallid Bone.
That went pretty damn well. So had to buy Holy White for the clones... Again, pretty damn nice.
So I just bought the set and I'm hooked. I'll stick with the OG painting for the special figures... But these are amazing when you just need to get it done fast.

That’s a perfect use for these kind of paints. You don’t need to be one or the other, you can be both and use the tool you need for the job. I absolutely love Speedpaints/contrast and it’s now how I painted 90% of the time. BUT I paint properly when it matters or the model requires it! Just finished my friends bday present which I painted with acrylics because I want an amazing finished single piece

Every time I watch someone paint using speedpaints as opposed to contrasts it looks better. I think the same consistency among the range is a killer feature. Everyone who tried using ultramarine blue contrast will know how inconsistent some contrasts are from the other ones, while speedpaints seem to work similar regardless of color. I will be getting the whole set of speedpaints.

I have been using these Speed Paints almost exclusively for my Shadows of Brimstone cowboys and enemies and they usually come out great. I would caution people that they tend to get super dark if you try to put on a second coat. My dark blue turned pretty much black with a second coat, so it's something you really have to plan around while they are still wet.

I think that to solve those issues of bumps and molding marks, just use a sharp hobby knife to trim that off, or even a small hobby file to smooth it out. Contrast style paints will find those flaws and pool in them, so you really need to be sure to clean your models

I think a color theory video using the speed paints would be cool. Like "get these cool effects by priming your model in this color, then painting it with X!" Or something like "layer your speed paints to create various shades and effects that you can't by simply mixing the paints beforehand!"

I've been mainly using a slapshop method for painting some mini's and I found using some of the armypainter soft/strong tone over the mini also helps give the good dirt and grime effect specially on brighter colours. One subject I don't see touched often with speed/contrast paint videos is can we mix them? Like a blue and gray speed paint to get a blue grey color? will it still retain it's property then? The other thing is color transition. I like to do wet bending passing not only from a dark to lighter tone but often from one color to another (yay for tentacles!). Thank you for taking the time do these clear and simple videos.

I don't think these would look good through an airbrush, and they wouldn't be able to work how they do off a brush. The reason the Citadel Contrast looks cool through an airbrush is because they're glazing/using it as a color filter; since those paints don't actually work well to give "contrast." I get my APSP set in two weeks, and I'm excited to try them. I'm also about to do some vehicles with the Citadel Contrasts, so I'm all over the place. LUL

Speed paint is more consistent than most contrasts from GW and is almost always less streaky. Contrast Medium is better than plain speedpaint medium in my experience, but not by enough to justify the price difference and shitty bottle. If you start from a darker colour, give it a quick drybrush with a nice light grey for cool hues or light brown for warm hues, then do your speed/contrast over, that will get you tons more depth and you can go back with your drybrush color and just edge highlights on the upward faces, or faces going toward your light source.

    • @elbitxo5945
      @elbitxo5945 Před 2 lety +1

that apparently happens when you thin down the paint quite a bit either with medium or water and use it for highlight or glaze over (it's specially messy when glazing and totally not recommended). Some colors like blues and reds tend to reactivate more than others. The big issue is further layers of Speedpaints reactivate each other, and sometimes even regular acrylics when trying to cover up mistakes. People are using varnish coats to avoid that, but I don't like it at all and just make me think these paints aren't adequate for that kind of uses. Regular highlight or drybrush with paints straight from the pot or lightly thinned don't seem to reactivate Speedpaints so, it is not at issue at all if you don't use advanced techniques and just want to get tabletop standard, as far as you are careful using them.

Nice work, the red turned out really nice! Certainly lookin' forward to giving these paints a whirl.
As for the shine on the Contrast one. While they do dry a bit satiny, nothing like that. So must've been varnished, imho.
Now, let's paint another space marine in that lovely flesh tearer red (the one you used for the purity seal).
Finally, I wonder if one can get the deep red colour when it's dry. How the colour looks when applied, before it dries i mean.

Inorite! This is how I missed the reactivation/bleed issue. Somehow I didn’t manage to cause it for ages!! I have no idea how I was lucky, i see it a lot now but on this model I kept dodging it. You need to varnish if you want to stop the bleeed, or get speedpaint 2.0 or get really lucky like me? Don’t thin your paint much (keep the paint dry) and don’t rub very much and it might not bleed

I’m really intrigued by these Speedpaints considering I’ve got a mountain of Marvel United coming soon (and Marvel Zombies later this year). I’ve painted some of my Arcadia Quest using this style of paints. They are also chibi and can come out looking really good! I have started my Marvel United in a flatter, less shaded style so I’m reluctant to try the speed paints on them - which is stupid I know because I’ll never paint them all anyway so why not give one a try :D I think they will work just fine, depending on your expectations but if you’re brand new I think you’ll be very happy!!!
