The squash grow low, are protected from the sun by the corn, and suppress weeds with their leaf coverage. They are called the"three sisters"
Soak them overnight in water before you plant!! Especially if you live in a hotter climate. I’m in Texas. I use a wilt tolerant snap pea and soaking the seeds the night before changed my life!!
But since this guy use so many water, maybe that's also enough. Especially he use the straw to maintain the moisture there. So the dried peas drowned in the water that makes it soft.

No waiting for the "right time" for mature peas. (Which you can often be too early or too late for the peas) Plus most don't know that the pea leaves are edible too. Tastes just like peas! I dont take too many (as plant does need them) but eat raw or add to a salad.
We used to have a wild native pea bush along my uncle and his neighbours who lived across the roads front fence, the old man raise our house grew watermelons he loved sharing with the neighbourhood, I miss when everyone had sometbing they grew or were growing and were excited to share, or at the very least knew their neighbors enough to offer

I had a weird year for my peas and my pole beans. The stems on them kept breaking a few inches up from the ground. I'm not sure if it was the wind blowing them around (although the beans were on poles and the peas are on a trellis). Can dry weather then rain cause the stems to break on their own? I hadn't mulched them yet so maybe? I'm hoping mulch will solve the issue and hoping it wasn't field mice or something chewing on them. (There has been no evidence of chewing on anything in the garden, including the actual pea pods so probably not that?)
My pea plants are turning yellow & the leaves are drying up & falling off... I always make sure to only water when the soil is dry, not moist to prevent overwatering... yet they're still growing pea pods all the same despite this. What is your opinion to save them?

Right after the last frost is the best time for most places in the US. If you live in a mild climate zone, you can also grow in the Fall, since peas is a cool weather crops. I live in the desert climate, so it's very hard for me to grow peas, not easy like that.

The cool weather. Make sure to sow them in the early spring.
I tried and failed to grow them for two and a half years and finally succeeded this past winter.

Peas are a cool season crop = spring and fall plant/harvest.
We grow Oregon pea pods successfully this way.

I like to water the soil so it’s thoroughly moistened before I set down seeds. That way I know I didn’t miss any dry spots down in there.

You can but limit the direct sunlight. They don't like a lot of heat, they are ideal the first crop to start when in season
