  • I enjoyed doing this. I'm no Anthony Fantano, so I may not be as detailed as some might have hoped, but I hope I can at least give a jumping off point for new listeners.
    Songs played in order:
Follow Your Leaders (First World Manifesto)
    Hey Suburbia (BoogadaBoogadaBoogada)
    Totem Pole (First World Manifesto)
    Supermarket Fantasy (BoogadaBoogadaBoogada)
Settle In (Some Freaks Of Atavism)
    Six AM (Kill The Musicians)

My brain hurts is like a definitive ramonescore album. Even though the Ramones (duh) started it all, I think that when My Brain Hurts came out people said "well now thats a genre"

No, we did not. It was one of the very best albums of that era. They were not the only band playing that style at the time. Off the top of my head: (so I could be off a bit)
I had the Sloppy Seconds - Destroyed LP …Around the same time as SW I had 7inches by The Vindictives ..The Queers - Grow Up lp was killer …I remember The Pink Lincons… there were many bands leading a shift from late 80’s hardcore to a more 70’s aesthetic …New Bomb Turks come to mind…All this stuff was part of a return to the fun and teenage feel that Ramones pioneered. I’m sure I could think of more examples if I tried…MBH was not a genre defining album (even now I think this genrefication is gay) it was just another killer record that was a snapshot of a general trend in punk. Was it among the early examples of a style that you guys call Ramonescore? Yeah…did it influence me to start sounding less like the Dead Kennedys and more like the Ramones? Absolutely…but it did not cause us to declare Ramonescore a genre. SW were still leaning a tad toward late 80’s hardcore themselves and even they did not escape the influence of Bad Religion at the time.
      Yup.

Actually, there was a cover of Television city Dream (DOA) on that album as well as Can’t Take It, right up until they pressed it. I still have the tape they gave me in 98 after the album had been mixed down and arranged. So for me, after listening to it for months when it was finally released I was shocked they dropped two songs.
But mostly the DOA cover the album took its name from.

I've never seen two SW lists the same. It's actually wonderful. My top 5: Bark like a Dog, My Brain hurts, First World Manifesto, Anthem for a New Tomorrow, Awful Disclosures (or at the time of this list, Some Freaks). Emo for some reason has also been one of my favorites. Self-Titled dead last, followed by Wiggle and Boogada. Blasphemy? Perhaps. But I love it all.

I enjoyed your list. i don't agree with it 100% but your top 2 matches my top 2. I first got into them in 1989. I had started working at a radio station in college and they had BoogadaboogadaBoogada and I thought it looked interesting. So I borrowed the record and fell in love. The song that really got me was "I Wanna Be Naked" once they reached the part where they did the Ramones chorus, I was hooked.
I knew that they had broken up and I was sad but thankful because they had made such a great album. But then "My Brain Hurts" came out in 1991 and I couldn't believe that I loved it even more. I saw them on tour for the album in Atlanta and me and my friend were the only two people there. Which is crazy because only two years later they had packed out the club they had played here.
I do have a great memory of them. On their 1993 tour they spent the night at the house I was living in. I spent the next day with the band before the concert and went to the sound check with them. After they did the sound check, I sat with the band on the stage and we all sang Ramones' songs.

In terms of songs, I think "Hey Suburbia" is painfully underrated even within the "punk community." Everytime I play the melody, people think it's Blink-182. The purist snobs might hate that, but remember that "Hey Suburbia" came out in the late 80s. Before Blink-182 even existed. Blink themselves have stated Screeching Weasel as an inspiration. Even if you're a cringe "punk purist," you have to admit "Hey Suburbia" was insanely ahead of its time. If they had wait to release that when "pop punk" was becoming big, they would've had a hit.

And he credits “Hey Sububia”’s guitar tracks to Jughead and Vapid. Vapid wasn’t even on the album- it was Fish. And the track composition is credited to Weasel and Jughead.
But I guess I get annoyed when everything mentioned about SW by a dude starts with the caveat about him not approving of those SXSW shenanigans. There was a time when women were treated as equals in the scene. Ben did nothing wrong. I guess I’m allowed to say that because I don’t have a penis. And I’m old enough that I bought almost of of these albums new, so I remember when we listened to the music more than the social media gossip about who was canceled. But maybe I should stop with my bullshit because he did give props to Some Freaks of Atavism and although mg list would look different, it’s hard to argue My Brain Hurts ranks in the top 3.

  • @johnnybarbados8211
    @johnnybarbados8211 Před 3 lety +1

This is a great listing. We all have differing opinions on what makes a great Weasel record, hence why it's a subjective concept. I will rule out Some Freaks of Atavism as I didn't know it existed until now (I know, I live under a rock) so thanks for that. My order, at this moment in time, but subject to change given a mood, from least liked to favourite is:
    Self titled
    Emo
    First World Manifesto
    Teen Punks In Heat
    Kill The Musicians
    Wiggle
    Boogada...
    Anthem For A New Tomorrow
How To Make Enemies And Irritate People
    Bark Like A Dog
    Television City Dream
    My Brain Hurts
I think Weasel were always a better band with Jughead and Vapid.

  • @sharkulashairstylist5505

I used to do that... then music became devalued, and the scene became devalued and the fascist element core became the punk core.... and those who stood back and said nothing made the bands that said something mean so much more.... the bands know where they stand and why Crass is the definitive punk band of all time but Weasel is the definitive Chicago band in my opinion. Bark like a dog sux then too I remember when it came out, Emo has SOME GREAT SONGS !
Heres why other chicago bands like oblivion or Apocalypse hoboken kind stood for nothing while screeching weasel had a light social message and it conveyed freedom, fun, safety, and non-conformity. Thats why Bens Lyrics resonate more than other Chicago bands.

Great video, I do think Wiggle had some iconic songs such as "Crying In My Beer" I would be curious on a Sloppy Seconds discog placement.

For me I really liked bark like a dog and yeah I can kind of understand why it’s generic to some people and you could even argue oh well it was of its time which wouldn’t be unfair ti say but personally cool kids and she got electroshocked are awsome songs and a couple more sings are great to

Hey man, I just stumbled across this and ended up checking out Stinky Meatballs 'Emotional Rollercoaster'. Cool band man. On top of the SW sound I swear I hear a slight tinge of Pegboy. Hope things go well for you.

If it does not have Jughead it is not A Weasel. My Brain is a good choice. I won't even listen to later day Weasel, though a minor claim to fame is me on the credits of their first two albums. Under rated great band like most Chicago area bands of the era.

Might want to ask everyone who abandoned him on that particular tour shortly after. My guess is that assaulting the opposite sex rubs 99% of people to wrong way. Wouldn’t have been my first choice in reaction personally to do that in front of a decent size crowd

Cool kids is definitely a classic weasel song. It’s honestly the only song maybe besides the album opener that I remember off top my head at any given time. Unfortunately that song is not enough to carry the rest of the record for me😅

It's crazy how a lot of fans favorites are other fans not so favorites. I remember hating bark like a dog in the 90's. The production was too polished and i thought the songs were just too weak and radio friendly. Through the years the album grew on me and now i enjoy it. The songs are catchy as hell but still can't stand cool kids lol.
