Our boy Luffy being the opposite of the stand user meme
Funny how the mc of the most popular manga is pretty plain looking at first glance.
So Oda can mold him into anything thanks to him being rubber.
@@orbboom6119 lol i miss luffy having no bounty and enemies having no idea who luffy was
@@orbboom6119 It's a fantastic design, really.
Reading through this chapter recently, really shows how Luffy is just a driving force of simplicity. He sees through the facades of the pirate world and exposes the true nature of anyone near him, be them friend or foe.
Shounen protagonist meets fool archetype.
@@fpedrosa2076not even just fools tho, like his talk with Vivi
It's why the Krieg arc is underrated. He's not a very compelling villain, but that's the whole point.
It's amazing how blunt disregard can be more painful than the most scornful insult.
And now you know why Saitama works so well.
Its so good with sanjis father after wholecake he goes down this list of the bad points of sanji and luffy just goes " Why is he complimenting you so much?"
I’ve never noticed just how much of genius piece of design work Luffy’s hat is. It visually signifies him (It is his trademark and his epithet) but it also give him the illusion of simian ears when displayed in profile, completing the ‘monkey’ look. However, the most genius trick it pulls is in how the red band and the top of the hat itself mimics a sun rising over a horizon line. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
Personally I think you're reaching with both of those points, maybe I haven't seen the right picture.
Well, i can`t see the simian ears, but i can definitely see the rising sun.
Oda understood this way before he began his serialization too. His early concept sketches and even his easter eggs in rurouni kenshin features the iconic straw hat.
@@yuricecconi561i mean, there's a huge argument for the rising sun, but that's spoiler territory
That response also shows why Luffy is fit to be King of the Pirates, he doesn't think about glory, or power, or dominion, he wants to be King so he can be the free-est person in the world, and his belief in himself is so deep and sure that he proclaims it as fact.
He doesn't back it up with bluster or posturing, he doesn't say "I'm fit to be king because I'm the strongest!" he just simply says "I am"
Well it's interesting then that he fights others who want to be king, does he consider them not as free as he is? Free to surpass anyone?
@@islandboy9381Luffy only really fights for two reasons, someone is in his way and for his friends/family. He's always a reactionary fighter, always going into a fight and rarely if ever starting a fight, unless you count him being stubborn and antagonistic towards anyone else who wants to be Pirate King.
@@Outlawbyname That makes his dynamic with Blackbeard even more interesting doesn't it? Blackbeard is following the conventional idea of being a King, that being the conqueror of everyone and keeping them under his thumb whoever would oppose his dream and actively antagonizes them even former mates, but Luffy consistently says he's not interested in that part of being a ruler and only fights to surpass, same as how Roger acted.
> Don Krieg simply can't make Luffy take him seriously
One more thing Skyen and Luffy have in common.
Shout out to the live action for essentially using Kreig as set dressing
@@BJGvideos at the baratie right before migawk shows up.
It’s actually a shame luffy doesn’t fight him they are perfect foils. Krieg is all talk about he’s the strongest luffy simply does action. Krieg has huge numbers luffy makes every crewmate selection personal. Krieg uses cheap tactics luffy while he may fight dirty comes at you straight up like an animal. Krieg demands to be taken seriously Luffy doesn’t care. By not having him fight krieg it ruins that character moment cause we all know mihawk can squish kreig that’s not important
I actually like Krieg as a passing villain simply because he's an excellent foil to Luffy, partly because of the reasons exposed in this short, but also because he's all about "muh martial power" and duplicity, which is the polar opposite of Luffy'd whole deal.
I think Don Krieg is a very well designed character insofar as he accomplishes his purpose perfectly, his purpose being to tell the Strawhats, and the reader that on Grand Line, no amount of gadgets, mens, ships, gadgets, any workaround is going to cut it. Don Krieg, with his extremely self-serious crew (one of his lieutenant's nickname is "the Demon" and the other claims to have never been hit), and his name that evokes nobility is a pirate that should be able to tackle the challenges of Grand Line, he looks like he's prepared for anything. But preparation and excuses and gadgets all crash upon the fact that Grand Line tests you, breaks you if you don't have the guts, the will, the dream, the camaraderie to stand tall in the face of unsurmountable obstacles like Mihawk. He's not very compelling, but he's very efficient at making the reader understand why Luffy with all his "winging it" attitude, will make it and more "classic" pirates won't.
Krieg has the flamethrowers but luffy is delivering the burns. Day 27
My favourite moment in the fight is when Krieg pulls out that spikey cape and luffy just punches it and him. It shows that luffy does not care about your gimmicks, your tools or your excuses. Luffy simply has his power and his strength and that is more than enough to kick your ass
Luffy is kind of animalistic in how he fights he doesn’t use cunning or cheap tactics he just uses what is around him and his strength/wits to win. Sure he might kick you in the balls but wouldn’t use a false surrender or anything like that
Honestly as much as I'm indifferent by Krieg most of the time, this short does make me appreciate *just* how insecure Krieg is.
Dude is CONSTANTLY trying to present himself as confident and smart despite knowing so little about the world.
I'm not the biggest Don Krieg stan but this short describes perfectly why I think he's a good early villain
The more I think about Krieg the more I really think he is boring on purpose. The narrative doesn't even take him seriously with how Mihawk and Gin are both more interesting characters.
I think the choreography of Luffy vs Krieg is actually pretty strong though.
Yeah the early villains may not be all that tough in the grand scheme of things but they all are great thematically each arc
Buggy arc is all about what really counts as treasure (him only thinking gold and wealth while the town and luffy view things symbolically as treasure)
Syrup village is all about what it means to be an upstanding person (usopp is the bastard son of a pirate and a pathological liar while kuro is serious butler to an established family but he really is a cruel killer while usopp is willing to fight for the town that hates him)
Sanji arc is all about valuing things/actions (sanji understands the value of food and values what zeff did for him while krieg doesn’t value his crew at all nor the danger the grand line did to him and was going to head straight back)
@@christopherauzenne5023 Hell even just Alvida and Morgan set up the "Arrive somewhere ruled by a tyrant, beat tyrant" structure most of the arcs use.
Then Arlong sets up so much and is also a genuinely interesting villain.
"I'm not scared of you!
- Yeah, I'm not scared of myself as well!"
YOU MENTIONED PEARL AGAIN, THE CURSE WILL BE ON YOU FOREVER, YOU WILL THINK OF PEARL EVERY WEEK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!
I love sky’s instant exhaustion, whenever he hast to talk about Krieg, it’s like a principal whenever a student gets brought in for detention.
I like how in finnish translation Luffy simply states "Ei susta ole siihen". Ruffly translated "You're not up for it" or even "You can't make it". Even in this part of the story Luffy already sees the distance between him and pirates like Krieg. There's a reason why Krieg is one of the few antagonists that don't come back in any way in the story.
you might be thinking of the second time. krieg asks it twice.
first time luffy just answers "me"
second time is after he uses his shuriken bomb and then he boasts about how he has even more weapons to use and repeats the question.
luffy repeats the pose and answers "me" again. but he adds "you can not do it" afterwards. or something to that effect
Luffy's simple confidence is so effective because, well, it's that. Simple. He doesn't complicate it-he thinks he is, therefore, he is; he thinks he can, therefore, he can. I love that about him.
Yeah, Luffy has this ability to telling when someone is full of shit, just like he did with Bellamy in Jaya
We already know that one punch he lands on Bellamy is going to be the best panel, or maybe "the sky"
@@drakunnunhawkwing3132 i love both of them but i think he will chose the punch scene because of how much intesinty and satisfaction the panel brings
That panel is a certified One Piece™ moment
You get the biggest baddest worst craziest nastiest fucking thing, mountains of lore and character arks and deep storytelling and it always culminates in those simple DOOON moments where in spite of all odds, in spite of fear or pain or no choices being visible, a decision is made confidently, a last stand is made, a simple but LOUD declaration is made and you know that shit is about to hit the fan.
God I love it.
They do it with a don
Hope one piece doesn’t end by the time you get to a Basil Hawkins video so you can will him into existence like you did Kuro. Good vid as usual!
Hit him with the rhetorical answer
I've been loving the One Piece shorts. I had no idea you were a fan of it until I started getting them recommended to me recently. The short analysis on some of these great scenes is very enjoyable.
I love this serie and I want it to continue as far as possible into one piece. Engagement engagement engagement
Krieg is such a meme.
Don't forget the cartoon monkey boy has a cool scar under his eye from when he STABBED HIMSELF IN THE FACE as a child to prove he's a tough guy. Really, just the most clear physical indicator of the kind of weirdo he is
60 year old TB in utter disbelief when Luffy’s final fight at laughtale is Don Krieg in a wig
Been reading through one piece for the first time (On chapter 452 rn) and yeah this shit has been really good! And your best panel series has been nice for going back and taking a quick look at where we were and where we are.
Zoro heard "monkey boy" and his he suddenly awaked the next level of haki
and the fun thing is, luffy is 100% right that he's more suited to be the pirate king.
not because he's the protagonist, not because he's like roger, but because unlike krieg, he'd rather die than give up.
I’d like to see an alternate universe where Kreig can actually back up his claims.
Don krieg: oh u use punches? Then I have a spiked metal cape >:)
Luffy: *punches straight through it*
I love Don Krieg
Honestly this and the one panel of One Punch Mna that is just cartoony Saitama going “Ok.” have the same energy and I wish more manga did that.
WAIT TILL HE PULLS UPS WITH THE GOLD HAKI!!!!!
No wonder he got offscreened in the live action. Bro didn’t even make it to Luffy
The point about hiding behind something really drives home the point where hes the only one piece maij villian that has armor, no other antagonist in the whole series need that kind of protection
Honestly don kreig is the perfect villain for this arc because SO MUCH was going on at once
Don is properly echoed in punk Hazzard who's main villains are a scientist obsessed with gas a navy man with armored infused with haki
krieg is kinda like an evil usopp
But, you opened with the best panel: King Ritchie!!!
I know Krieg isn’t that much of a show stealer, but I do love the early contrast we get between him and luffy during all of this
Poor krieg. I liked his design. He’s just compensating for something
I'd say the lion taking over the buggy pirates is better than any frame with don krieg
Imagine ANY of the bad guys with the powers we know now. I'd b afraid of Kuro if he learned any of the 6 powers and Haki blade gloves
The hat is not silly. It is a perfectly valid choice of headwear for someone constantly in the sun. The point is not that the straw hat is silly, but that it is a simple, everyday item with ALL the meaning.
Don Krieg is kind of a failed Usopp. Usopp hides behind his tricks, his running away his special manuvers and his inventions. But the big difference is that Usopp has a drive, a dream and is brave and bold where it matter inspite of his gadgets.
Y'all are just sleeping on the fact that the true Joyboy is D.awn Krieg
The way Luffy is a simple, humble dude who isn't impressed by people overcompesating does make me feel a lil bit prouder of being brazilian. Since there's this idea that Luffy would be as well irl, at least it's what i heard
Imo this is why the live action should have had more don krieg
All fear Kriegs Golden Haki
Captain Richie is best panel
Kinda the point of East Blue villains the main thing separating them with Luffy not being their ethics or powers but the fact that Luffy has ambition and they don't. Nevermind Luffy not liking them, he doesn't even respect them.
Ya know, in hindsight, i think we'd look back at Krieg with more kindness if Pearl didn't exist. If it was *just* Don and Gin, like Gin is the last major crew member he didn't lose on the grand line, and thats only because Gin is so competent that he was the only one who could survive Kreig's failures.
Besides making his blistering about his strength be even more pathetic and ironic when he can't even bring up more then one competent crew member, it'd also make the arc shorter. So like. Double win.
Luffy `s Hearts are so low.
Once i Saw It I can no longer think in anythig else
You do realize that in describing Krieg, you end up describing Usopp.
Usopp is at least self aware that he's lying
I think Don kreig serves as a vehicle to show what kind of person is worthy of the title of pirate king. In this arc there are two pirates who have experienced and lived the grand line, mihawk and Zeff. Both in their own way respect luffy. Mihawk asks luffy what he wants and with zero hesitation luffy responds pirate king. Mihawk doesn’t laugh at him he just notes that is more difficult than zoros dream and notes the camaraderie between the two. Zeff during the fight waxes nostalgic about seeing someone with all heart and guts and seems to admire luffy. Kreig however is called a fool by mihawk and scorned by Zeff for his cheap tactics. I know people sleep on kreig but as an instrument of luffy and the world’s development he is important
Just got some One Punch Man vibes with the panel.
For context: In a series where you have other character usually with the most details and clean design, Saitama four times out of five looks like he is from a completely different series with how “cartoony” he looks in comparison to everyone else. And yet in spite of this, we as the audience knows that while Saitama might come off as a joke in his world, we also know that if Saitama can literally one shot a vast majority of threat.
And Luffy definitely gives off that vibe with how plain he looks in comparison to Don Kreig who is trying to look like the most intimidating pirate out there (when we know he can’t hold a candle to anyone. Let alone we already know he wasn’t cut out for the grand line considering what happened to him and his crew).
Engagement!
You're gonna hate this, but every single reason you've listed to hate about Krieg has actually made me appreciate him more and more.
Skyen all your excellent reasons for why Krieg is lame are only making me like him more as a character at this stage in the narrative.
Damn, krieg is a league of legends player
Cant wait till we get to the page where Luffy fucking DECKS Krieg through his armor. It's a hell of a impact spread, but it also shows the difference in their character. Nothing Krieg does can match Luffys straightforward determination. No shield can match a guy willing to put his life on the line for his dream. You cant win a fight without being willing to get hurt
Greetings praise algorithm gods
Which is scarier?:

Will you make a video about the live aciton one piece when the Strike is over?
Imagine berserk
Now that the strike is over, are you going to review the live action series?
The strike is not over - the Writer's Guild has reached an agreement, but the actors are still on strike.
@@TBSkyenShorts Aw shoot!
Why does luffy have ears on his neck
How dare you disrespect don wreig-sama he is a top teir yonko strongest person in the East blue, dragon garp and even pearl he trumps all
Hold on, Krieg might not have been much, but he COULD have been something.
So, Luffy and friends, in comparison to the grand line? They don’t get new world capable until a time skip, after getting clapped severely by people around Mihawk’s level. And Ace’s death.
Krieg was going to into that world, just barely, he and his crew got strong enough to dip in and get stronger through trial and tribulation.
And who do they manage to piss off? Mihawk. Someone so far beyond them, it’s insane. If Mihawk had taken the same amount of destructive interest in Luffy and crew? One Piece would have ended on the spot.
No getting stronger through adventures, none of that.
Krieg was admittedly insecure, however, he NEVER got the opportunity to GROW and become actually strong. He got slapped immediately by one of the biggest fish in the ocean. Meanwhile, Mihawk spared Luffy and friends.
And then Luffy fought progressively stronger opponents, getting stronger and stronger as a result.
Like Imagine if Luffy was sailing out to sea, for the first time, slaps that sea king, and suddenly FRIGGIN AKIANU rocks up to his little boat and slaps him? Same energy.
This dynamic is why I can’t agree with anyone saying Kreig sucks as a character. It’s like wanting a boxing match with only Mike Tyson, no one else. You need a pompous loser to hype himself and build his house of cards in order to have Luffy satisfyingly knock it down. Sanji’s a complex character so he gets the nuanced villain. Luffy is the personification of a thrown punch so his villains are the personification of different very punchable faces.
Honestly as much as you might dislike Don Krieg this is honestly why I kind of like him. He is just intentionally made so incredibly pathetic and through him and Mihawk this arc shows the first real indications of just how "built different" the straw hats are compared to other East Blue pirates, even those who have ambitions.
♥
Luffy the goat
No amount of golden haki can save you from the true strength breaking secret power mechanic in one piece....mediocrity.
Did Don Krieg have armorment haki? He wounded (pierced) luffy, which he was supposed to be immune to right?
he wounded him bcos he started using sharp bullets over ball ones. Luffy's rubber body is not immune to sharp objects, which is why sword works against him which is shown as early as his fight against Axe-Hand Morgan
The funny thing is the things that make Dan Krieg, such a pathetic character also in the looping around and making him a great character.
Because he’s off flash, no substance. When it comes to each of the spinning villains that Luffy has dealt with so far. They’re each captains that don’t measure up for one reason or another and they each black something that Luffy already has.
Alvida, is just the stereotypical pirate. She’s what you expect to see when you think about pirates.
Luffy represents that there’s more to it than that.
Morgan, is instantly the perfect way of introducing that the people you expect to be the good guys, the Navy or anything, but. He’s a thug using notoriety for something that you learn in the next arc. He didn’t even actually do even he doesn’t know that it was all a façade.
Buggy, is someone who can only view treasure as treasure, and is someone who lets his fear of the downside of his devil fruit power keeps him landlocked and an able to actually chase his dreams.
Clawhadore, is someone who is so sick of the pirate life that he went through this convoluted long-term plan to become rich affluent, and then to get rid of anyone and everyone who ever knew he was a pirate.
Dan Krieg, is decked out in gold armor with all these tricks and poisons. But he’s nothing but an ostentatious poser. And say what you will about Luffy’s faults. He will except criticism, and he will always strive to back up. Whatever it is, he’ll say he will do.
And eventually Arlong. He fish-man, who will do anything. To keep someone under his thumb so he can use them. Something that is in the front to Luffy because to him your crew is your family.
