    Last month Chillie Falls (another cruise vlogger) went on a cruise and Chillie has issues with bad knees (he & I are both old timers when it comes to cruising) & he posted something on FB about his mobility issues & I got back to him & told him about Scootaround & that I always rent from them - and he went to guest services on his ship & was able to rent a scooter for the remainder of his cruise! It made the cruise so much better for him
    - he even used the scooter in Nassau! I was amazed that there were a few extra scooters on the ship he was on - and he was able to rent it for the last few days of his cruise! Now I think Scootaround is his one & only sponsor!! Eventually he’ll need a knee replacement (I think he’s had both hips replaced) but for now he knows he can get on a ship - do ship tours & “run around” the whole ship without being in a lot of pain at the end of each day!
    I’ve known about Scootaround for many years (they used to be Care Vacations) - and since I’m still ok walking when I’m at home - I still just rent a scooter for a week (I have a friend that rented a few times, but he is now cruising more often & purchased a lightweight portable scooter which he can take on many shore excursions)! Scootaround even rents hospital beds, oxygen machines, patient lifts & other medical equipment for people with disabilities who love cruising! Truly amazing - most of the ships are at least somewhat wheelchair accessible (and many are being retrofitted to be more accessible) which makes cruising a perfect vacation for people with mobility limitations!!
    I did not know that all the keys are the same (that wasn’t the case several years ago) - but I’ve never lost a scooter or had one stolen - and I usually put something “unique” in the scooter basket so I can find my scooter easily!! Last cruise I had a little stuffed husky dog with a tag with my name on it - affixed to the basket!

    I have my own personal scooter (looks like a transformer when it folds up). We always have parked it close to where we are but not at our table and key goes with me. A Royal Caribbean employee came over and stuck a key in it and started to bring it to another guest. I stopped them (and the other guest was saying not that one) and that's when I found out the keys were duplicates.

    I just got back from a cruise on the Carnival Sunshine and the whole thing went very smoothly. I have my own scooter and the staff were so amazing and helpful. If you have the need for a scooter don't let that stop you from cruising. My experience was great and besides the staff most of the guests were also very accommodating.

    I've rented from Scootaround a few times. They delivered it to the cabin, and when I disembarked, I left it in the cabin so they could pick it up, as instructed. That's good information, though, about the key not being unique. Hmmm.

    I take my own scooter, RCCL this year, Princess 2 years ago. I got a disability cabin and there was plenty of room in the cabin for my scooter. The Windjammer has tables next to the wide asile with places especially for people on scooters. There were a lot of scooters so take something to distinguish yours from someone else’s. Since mine went everywhere with us we never had a problem.
    Anymore updates on the RCCL voyage to New Zealand?

    I take my own scooter with me. I lock it when I leave it but also turn it off at the back so if someone tried to use it if would not move. I also take a folding wheelchair to use on excursions it is a lot easier to get on and off the ship especially if a tender is needed.

    I also rent a scooter from Scoot Around. There’s are 2 big things that I Personally learned about renting a scooter on a cruise.#1. Find out if your cruise goes directly to the Pier. #2. Find out what’s the maximum weight and if they take portable (fold up) On the tender boats. I learn the hard way. If you choose to read a folder I must tell you they are not comfortable. And another thing not all tender boats allow them on. If you choose to get a portable one that folds up they are great you can throw them on the bus or taxi so there or you’re not limit to where you can go.

    When I rented my scooter they delivered it to our room & I had to walk through the maddening maze of embarking... I have 3rd stage COPD/Chronic Respiratory Failure & by the time we were about 11th in line I could barely breathe.... wasn’t a great experience-- at the end I was told to leave the scooter in our room & had to walk & go through all that.,, that & almost every ELEVATOR experience was horrible. Besides that (besides wrecking the scooter- I still have FOUR huge swollen spots on my legs) our cruise on NCL Breakaways was great!! I rented from Scootaround also.

    While we were on the Encore I was sitting near Guest Services waiting on my father. And a lady on a scooter ran into a man standing at Guest Services. His ankle was stuck in the front wheel. The people nearest him was trying to get him out. He yelled "he needed help!" And I can't tell you how fast the people behind the desk came out. They did get him out and I believe he went to the Dr to get his foot checked out. It was starting to bruise. Yikes!

Are most cruisers rude to those with mobility issues? I’m a fairly new subscriber and think that you and Tony are such wonderful people! I’m so nervous to cruise. Maybe consider taking a pompom or something to personalize your rented scooter for the duration of the cruise so it's obvious to somebody else of "oh I didn't put that on there that must not be mine" answered be easier to spot your own scooter if there was 10 scooters parked in the same area😉

    Thanks for discussing the limitations for people with disabilities. My husband cruised with us for the time October 2021 on the horizon and had a good time with some issues with people not letting him by in his personal wheelchair. He is an amputee, retired veteran. He faces this issue every day so he said it was minor compared to everyday life and we booked another cruise on the Mardi Gras in June for Father’s Day. Huge mistake. The horizon elevator set up was much better because there was limited ability to over crowd an elevator due to the floor assignment feature on the elevator. On the Mardis Gras people were so rude and pushed and cut in front and literally would not let people in wheelchairs and scooters on the elevators and went around them without thinking twice as they tried to maneuver to get on one. Told carnival but no one replied. Maybe there needs to be someone standing there I guess idk. We are planning to book again and my husband will only consider the Horizon for this trip and we made a shirt that says “please allow those who can’t take the steps to board elevators first , thank you management” as a jab at people. We both plan to wear them instead of typical family embarkation shirts.

    I have to agree with Jenny about people that never operated one. We just happened to be working ID check and we have a rolling table. Lady comes flying in the doorway hits the desk and pins us up against the wall. Then she is screaming because she does not know how to shut it off. Hubby ran up and shut it off and proceeded to have a heated discussion with her about operating it. Luckily we were not hurt but it scared the **** out of us.

    What I would have an issue with vis-a-vis the liability portion in the fact that the keys are universal. Can you imagine if car keys were universal??? How can you ensure that nobody else drives away with the scooter you are liable for? I guess you can bring a chain and lock and secure it to a hand railing somewhere but I am sure the cruise line would have issues with that.....

    Just got off a RCCL cruise and the scooter problems were everywhere because most of the people using them had absolutely no idea how to operate them. Some were even terrified to drive them with other passengers in close proximity. Good luck with that on a cruise ship. Friends on the cruise told me of a lady who had her foot broken by having it run over by someone driving a scooter. Who’s libel for that??? Just leaving a rented scooter in the stateroom is not inservice operational training. I give the scooters plenty of room as a common courtesy, but also to protect myself from any unfortunate mishap.

    I know that this may sound lame but. Get on the elevator going the opposite direction from the crowd. If everyone wants to go down. Get on the elevator to go up. Then take the science route. Yes you may have to ride the elevate up 4 or 5 floors. But no one is fighting you to get on the elevator. Then you just ride it back to where you want to go. I know this does not work when you are at the bottom or top of the elevator cycle. But trust me for most of your week onboard it works out great. Also on disembark day do your best to be in the early group. I love cruising. I wish however. That the cruise lines would before each show in the main theater. Show a cruise etiquette clip. Proper behavior at the buffet and at the elevators. No hats in the main dinning room. Look like a thug outside a fine restaurant. Hope this helps someone and sorry for the rant.

    I use a scooter and brought my own scooter on my last cruise. It is a special foldable one that I can store in an airplane overhead and cost $2,700. I got a "wheelchair accessible" cabin but the cabin was tiny (Carnival Inspiration). I had to fold my scooter when in my cabin in order to have space to use my walker to get into the bathroom. I kept my scooter with me at all times even though I have a "Tile" on it. I have to fly to my next cruise and am debating whether it would be better to rent a scooter or take mine. Obviously I would pay no rental for my own scooter and there is no additional airline luggage charge for my scooter and walker; however, I do require extra luggage space when getting to and from the airport which incurs additional cost. I think the comment about the low battery is probably the truth.

    Next time decorate the darn thing!! Glad that it worked out okay. As someone who has had to us a scooter (broken ankle) in a grocery store, they are not that easy to maneuver. I felt like I was learning how to drive all over again. I felt so bad and tried not to get in anyone's way. Now when I see someone in a scooter I remember when I had to use one even though it was sparingly. I am much more understanding and patient now because of my having to use one. Same thing with walkers and wheelchairs. Do you really think these people want to have to use those? Even though my father in-law needed to use a walker, he would not. He said once he start to have to use that he might as well hang his spurs up. I tried to tell him there was nothing wrong with it but he ended up falling and breaking his arm and hip. Needless to say that really took the wind out of his sails. Anywho, glad it all worked out good and thanks for sharing!!

    All passengers cabin doorways are at least 23 inches wide up to 26 inches. is most important weight with and without battery. Airline needs this info as well as cruise ship especially if you are bringing your own wheels. It is to never wise to leave your scooter. Most people see people on a scooter and that person never leaves his ride. There is no corral to pt scooters cause it is rare ambulatory folks need them. Just sayin. Junie

  • @DavidWood2
    @DavidWood2 Před 4 lety

    As others have said, the key on a scooter and the locking systems on most powerchairs provide little in the way of security. These locking mechanisms do not provide any meaningful security - they are merely a deterrent to casual tampering and joyriding, especially by children, also to meet the regulatory requirement in some countries that the mobility aid is lockable.
    There are only a handful of styles of key used on scooters and even if the scooters were 'keyed unique', the type of locks used are trivially defeated by anyone familiar with physical attacks on locks as they are a very low security type. The joystick lock and unlock sequence used on many powerchairs is well known and trivial to discover online. The 'keys' built into a jack plug simply short the tip and ring together. The most secure electronic lock I know of is the locking plug used in the charging socket of some powerchairs - but even that is only another form of security by obscurity, as the plug is trivially reverse engineered by anyone with basic electronic knowledge, also most of the devices that can use this plug have the joystick lock sequence also enabled in the programming so can be unlocked using the joystick.
    The best way to immobilise a scooter or powerchair is to disconnect the battery in the most non-obvious way, then physically lock the frame of the mobility aid to a strong point using a good quality chain and padlock. If you don't physically immobilise the mobility aid, it can usually be put into freewheel mode and simply pushed away.

    Cruise lines need to get their act together regarding wheel chairs and scooters. They are a huge risk to passengers and an unnecessary hinderance to other passengers. In no way, shape, or form, should these things be running around the buffet area. For the love of God, please use one of the sit-down restaurants with waiter service. If Cruise lines are going to continue to allow these things to run people over people in the buffet area, then set aside tables at the entrance to the buffet, and have waiters go through the buffet for these people that refuse to use the restaurants. Nothing personal, but there are a lot of people driving these things with very little patience and very little experience, that have the "Get out of my way mantra". Most of the "Scooter Drivers" are well over the machine's maximum weight anyway....someone is going to get seriously hurt, and I'm betting it won't be the untrained driver of these machines. Stop the madness!

    • @redhatbear1135
      @redhatbear1135 Před 2 lety

      I’m with you about new drivers of rental scooters, but people do cut in front of you and there is nothing you can do but hit them. When I used to pass behind others, with a rollator, I’d say something like don’t back up just so they were aware of their surroundings. On a scooter I’ve had to say stop moving! I really can’t dodge a moving person in an elevator! I’ve even had to tell people who moved from the sides to the center back to not do that because even if i can stop not everyone can!
      As for eating in a sit down restaurant, just exactly where would that be on a port day? Or embarkation day? People hyped by their new adventure are usually not paying attention to their surroundings, it’s not the scooter drivers fault if you aren’t paying attention too. And yes, I’ve seen something past stupid done with rental scooters but I drove a scooter without a speed governor and most everyone never knew it would go 6mph because I had the ability to drive really slow without the rabbit turtle switch!
      I now have a wheelchair with a joystick it drives particularly different and has a large learning curve to understand what happens when the front wheels get turned and you want to go straight!
