I know I am a little late here, but who cares? As a fashion historian, if it hurts, that means you have it way too tight, it's not laced properly, or you're just lying. Corsets are meant to fit your body shape, along with it being a thing for everyday wear. You could go mountain climbing in those things. It was like a bra. The media boosts it up so that corsets are seen as evil, but if anything, it's just a bra but with more support on the figure. It's not meant to kill you, and it is in no way painful. Things like tightlacing in the victorian era were only done for short periods for events, like balls, and it would have been undone pretty fast. Also, to get this out of the way. No, it was NOT placed directly on bare skin, it was put over fabric, so it did not give you a rash like in the movies. So "I do the impossible and wear a corset for a full day" yeah, no, everyone--even the men--wore corsets and it was hardly ever mentioned to be 'painful.' Even if it was, it was most likely overexaggerated like this video here.

Very few women actually tight laced back then. Most women just wore them as support like us wearing an under wire bra. I'm sure some time in the future, people will look back at our bras as torture devices because they'll have misinformation about them like we do with corsets.
