- This is a survival story of a baby white-bellied caique, Derpla.
I'm a parrot hobbyist and a breeder. I've had birds since I was 7, and I started to breed in 2004. My adult white-bellied parrot Pyro needed a friend, and I booked a baby from the first caique clutch that was born in Finland.
At first, I remember asking the oldest one, but destiny had other plans, as the youngest baby was badly neglected. This clutch was the breeder's first one and he asked for my advice. Together we pondered through all the options. Handfeeding (=human foster parenting) isn't considered the best option since it might cause behavioral problems and it's also very risky. You need to have time and you need to do it right.
Mostly the problems are caused when the sexual imprinting goes wrong, and the bird sees itself kinda as a human. But Derpla was already clearly over a month olf, and the sexual imprinting had happened correctly. This, the fact that I had experience on handfeeding and that I had an adult caique who could show the way to become a bird, led us to the conclusion that we will try to save the baby with hand-feeding.
After scaling things through carefully, we decided that Derpla moves to my place for handfeeding. And, that if I manage to save it, I can keep it. I became a foster foster parent to this baby caique. But what happened then...? Watch this video to find out!

What's strange to me is how people think they are so above the nature they came from, that they think the lifeforms on the same Earth shared by them just simply don't feel anything at all. But when they show themselves to us, y'all consider it "human." Nah, that's just the sentience that comes with life, no matter what degree, and we should respect it whether we have the privilege to see it or not.

No. Not all Parrots live up to a hundred years. African grays and Macaws sure do, but my 2 parakeets are said to live MAXIMUM up to only 5-8 years, but if they're lucky, 15-20 years.

Thank you. :) I'm glad to hear that. There are especially homeless animals who would need shelter. And we should educate people to take care of their pets and not abandon them. Luckily Derpla's original breeder didn't abandon him, but got him the help he needed. :)

So heart warming. So cute. He has such strength. I have 2 parakeets of mine. Perry and budgie. Perry was given to me by one of my moms friend and Budgie I adopted him. He was born in the pet store and I got him when he was around 11 months to 1 year old so he never learned to fly as a baby. He still can’t fly so in teaching him to talk and to fly. Perry knew how to fly ever since I got her. Durpla is such a trooper. The most heart warming vid on ur ever

I love the jumping around, and plying on their backs. I'm glad you are also responsible to remind viewers that parrots are not just cute but they do bite each other and their human companions. While this video is about a struggling baby bird, it really is about your heart, and endless support to this creature. It's ultimate success is the ground work that you gave for its flight in life. Nymphica I need a breeder that will carry both WB and BH Caiques so that they will grow together from babies. Also interested in Sun conure. It's not easy to find a quality breeder here in Canada who is breeding the species that you want and who socialized with the bird. I don't want a pet store bird. Too many issues. Thanks for asking.

I'm soo sad my bird died today I'm not even joking his name was blue ( I know so creative XD ) anyway.. I tried to feed him and he did but he stoped eating and I picked him up and he could not stand up correctly he cept on falling on his side or his back I buried him a few hours ago I love him he closed his eyes and stop breathing love him so much

It was so kind of you to a free to help Derpla. I'm glad that Pyro got along with him. My family family was driving back home when my uncle spotted a kitten on the side of the road ( we live in the country) she had been thrown out of a car. She wasn't injured but even though she was nearly six weeks old she was so malnourished that she couldn't stand. We didn't think she was going to make it through the night but now a few months later she's a happy little ball of energy that loves playing with our other cats.

Recently started working at a pet store and recently got my first green cheek conure from a breeder!!! I love my echo soooo much although she's made me bleed multiple times, scratched my cornea, "grooms me" (peels the dead skin off my lips and cuticles) and bites the crap out of me she's still really young and I LOVE HER... she's my little angel.... she eats breakfast with me... well she steals the crumbs of my bagels and she hops in my hair and just gets a whole lot of crumbs in my hair but she's perfect in every way... she's JUST learning to talk I love her
