Advice to firefighter rookies: Get thick skin

- It's hard work to become a firefighter in Atlanta. Recruits go through 11 to 12 months of training that includes EMS and EMT training, followed by 16 weeks of fire training. A recruit only gets two chances to pass the EMT test before all the hard work is lost and they are kicked out of the academy. And once a recruit finally graduates and becomes a firefighter rookie -- that's when the true hands-on learning begins. Here, experienced firefighters let rookies know what they should expect when the real world hits at the fire station.

Look busy, never refuse a detail, and never express disapointment.
The first year for a probationary firefighter is not only to hone his skills, but to see how he interacts with his crew and public. If a rookie isn’t getting messed with by his fellow firefighters, that is the time to worry
''4 minutes and 27 seconds (ah darn!) nah it was a minute and 23 seconds, good I guess.'' lololol
I found that doing a 24hr shift away from home was my BREAK TIME. Hell, the work is at home. (wife and 3 daughters at home)
25mfd What was the recruitment process like
@@Tony-ml5bs it's like boot camp. Paramilitary. Everything they do though is to break you down then build u back up. You have to be able to work under stress.
@ Tony it's as will white said... Paramilitary... definitely like boot camp... lotta pressure because in milwaukees' academy you can only fail 3 tests... then you're out... if you're thinking about applying get a copy of the IFSTA essentials of firefighting book... study it
Can U Have Neck Tattoos?
@Barlos Rojas depends on the depts. hiring policies
If you don't like the ball breaking, just understand it is a way of dealing with the stress of the job! You want respect in this job you have got to earn it!
LOL, ok, I had some serious flashbacks when she was singing "clean up clean up"!! Someone has a small child :)
Kudos for the video content! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for firefighter interview tips without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got excellent success with it.

Thanks for the Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you considered - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (search on google)? It is a good one off guide for firefighter interview tips without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend after many years got great success with it.
why are you guys commenting the same thing
@@jonathannetsereab Spammers maybe?
They seem pretty happy and cheery to be rookies, especially on their first day!
iamtingley why would they not be happy to be starting their first day on the job?? Being friendly while still humble and respectful, and showing a true willingness to fit in by cleaning right away, doing rig checks and stepping up to cook etc, makes life as a brand new rum much easier.
Good advice 👍
I was expecting a *T H I C C* meme...
The only way I can describe how I imagine it would feel is basically like sending a middle schooler to a college
I don't remember this comment lol, what was I even talking about? 😂

A rookie sleeping in bed in the day?
I was wondering too what kind of rookies do they have smh
Came here for the thumbnail of the firemen eating. That shot wasn't in this :(
Rookie on their phone, sleeping, lack of baring, and on a recliner...? Must be nice.
I have no real problem putting on the turnout boots, pants, and jacket, and the protective hood. The gloves are my main problem. I basically have the hands of a gorilla, and I need a big size pair of gloves just to be in them properly. (By the way I am taking fire academy in a High School Program for Level 1 Firefighter eligibility, and I am kind of in a squeeze to get a pair of large gloves of my own for the academy so that's a small problem I have to deal with donning.)
Dark-Defector. As a female firefighter/EMT who’s on the short side of average, I got the opposite problem-I had to go over to the Fire Store in our area to get new boots because I have VERY small feet and they never had any my size at the firehouse! It took several years of mentioning it when my old rubber boots passed their “expiration” date before the chief finally sent me down there!
I also have small hands, which means that I finally started keeping a box of medium-sized medical gloves in my locker because they only have large and extra large gloves on the units and I got tired of shaking down the ambulance crews. You just TRY taking vital signs with gloves that are two sizes too large!
We don't make beds in the morning, looks like we're ready to go bed.
I’m going today for my ELPAT. Wish me luck!!
How did it go?
She was in the recliner day one 😐
My fastest time in training was 57 seconds in gear drills.
Kreed Whitmire nice man!
1 minute 23 is good lol
Bad video title. Nobody in this video said anything about thick skin. Is it normal for people to do friendly teasing to each other and it is normal for frank discussions to be necessary when a major problem exists, so one should be open to suggestion and open to learn, but if it crosses over into genuine hazing that requires thick skin to tolerate, that's a culture problem within the department.
Taking my agility test in October 🙌🏾🙌🏾😌 looking forward to this , hopefully my hard work pays off and I pass this time
Im looking into becoming a firefighter... any advice for a 20yr old like myself?
LeChris006 lol, were the same age🙌🏾 I don't really have much advice , except to make sure this is what you really want . Do your research , on tools, trucks , calls , etc. ( it never hurts to be informed ) , get your EMT basic training done ( I finished mine , but have to take a refresher course since I waited a year to take my NREMT) , TRAIN!! Once a day , make sure you're doing some thing physical, especially cardio and upper body . I'm a girl , so it was a but harder to master the upper body part 😂. I've already taken the agility test . It differs from state to state , but I had ( ladder climb , hose carry , another ladder exercise, using a sledge hammer to move a metal block a few feet , using a charged hose and dragging it a few feet , running up bleachers with two wrapped hoses on your shoulder , and finally the dummy drag ) and all of that must be done in 7 minutes or less . It's pass or fail , so they'll tell you immediately. This will be my second go , so I'll let you know how that goes
Joy Mechell u gotta insta? 🤔
LeChris006 😂😂 I think I'm the only 20 in the world without an insta, snapchat, etc...all I have is tumblr, Twitter , and Facebook ...I'm not really photogenic 😁😂
Joy Mechell true true bc i wanna keep up with your progress
It Ain't bad its a good job
I can't believe these rookies sleep during the day. That blows my mind.

One thing you will learn about serving on the Fire Service is, that it strips away any illusion you might have about death, You will learn that it happens in an infinite number of ways. Very seldom is it. " give my love to mom.: It's violent and when it's not violent it not very pretty.. You will learn over the years if you make it. That PTSD is NOT limited to soldiers. you will get it. 35 years later I am still haunted by the things I had to see, There are things you will see that no one should ever half to see. It's things that you will never be able to unsee. I wish and pray for all my brothers and sister in the Fire Service. May God help you when you need it most. Trust in the Lord and do not be afraid. Trust me, crying will happen. Be safe, 24 on 48 off, comes out to 56 hours a week. Do not let the public see you cry.
Stay alive to save lives
OHH Lawd.
Do you have to be a driver I have my drivers License but I don’t trust myself driving a huge truck like that
Pongii no, it’s your choice if you want to be a driver/operator which you have to be trained and take a test

You mean rookie

@@barlosrojas5909 how big is that tattoo? Where is it on your neck? What is it of?
I would love to try 24hr shifts. Back to back nights sucks ass!
Poor video, silly interviews, not a very accurate or mature representation of the fire service.
4 minutes? how the hell did he make it through FF1? PS those gloves are dank.. The shelby pig skin.. can move coals around on my grill with them
in Russia standard 30 seconds, but many can do it 20 seconds
He was joking...
Kopihucky it wasn't 4 minutes, they were messing with him.
If you heard him he said “4 minutes and 20 seconds” then right after he said “oh I guess it was 1 minute 23 seconds”
A lady firefighter...so cool!

Thanks for the Video clip! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you considered - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for firefighter interview tips minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my close friend Aubrey at last got excellent results with it.
24h away from home hahahaha try the military son
Being a firefighter is about saving lives, not getting your feeling validated. This is especially relevant in today's society where everything seemingly revolves around the notion of feelings and emotional states. Suck it up, buttercups, this isn't about you, this is about you saving people who're like you.
Bunker gear in the bay? 2022 would never
Cutie for sure :)
Here’s some advice. Avoid this career path entirely. Low pay. Loooong hours. Gone for days. In my 20 year career as a fireman looking back i wouldn’t change anything, but the job took away from me more then what I got out of it. All the missed birthdays, and holidays with my family. Time I will never get back. My kids are grown, I have a different career. Glad I got out when I did

There’s too much none sense in the firehouse. Firemen should focus on their skills. All the ego and ball busting is a waste of time and energy. It has no place in a professional organization.
First off, its FIREFIGHTERS!!!
Not FIREMEN!!!
Such a demeaning, condescending comment when you have women in the department!!
Stfu idiot
