    I like that she says it's always been Janelle, even before dirty computer. People need to look back to their older selves and say "you were always dope, you did the best you could back then, you were deserving of love" That is Janelle saying all her past work is valid and beautiful because it was her at the time...even if it was a metaphorical story that she seemed to be hiding behind, she was expressing herself the way she could at the time, she put all of her heart and soul into it, and she was beautiful. I'm very glad we have dirty computer and it's amazing and a new level of openness, but Janelle has always been dope and pushed herself to express new and challenging ideas.

      If anything her older work is even more sophisticated and complex than her more recent work. I feel like she had to reign herself in to get people to start listening to what she has to say, because she has a LOT to say.

    Jane is a free-thinking, autonomous, polyamorous pansexual. Ari is a free-thinking, autonomous, polyamorous lesbian. While I did watch Ari's MMF reaction and heard her say that she hasn't been a very big fan of Ms. Monae's _music_ previously, I can understand selecting her to do the interview, as well as understand her current "gushing." This kind of representation isn't ubiquitous-this is the closest many, including Ari, is going to get to being represented in mainstream media. Is the interview awkward? In parts, yes. Could the questions have been better? Yeah, probably. But do I oust Ari as a fake fan? No. An incredibly green one. maybe, but not fake. She stated in her MMF reaction that she has always been a fan of Ms. Monae as a woman-just not a huge fan of her sound. I know what this would have meant for a forever fANDROID to conduct this interview, but I can also imagine what it was like for Ari to interview a woman who showcased that her form of love was valid. That her image is valid. That's how I took her "huge fan" statement-as "I am a fan of your message and the things you stand for." This may not be the interview we were expecting, but it was still insightful, and I am personally thankful this is an experience we can all share. Let's start spreading that love Ms. Monae spoke on among this comment section.

    When Janelle is asked about the point in the film where she looks right into the camera, and what she meant for us to see at that moment? What I got from it was, "Come With Me! Stop waiting for something to jar you off the couch where you all are playing video games or on your smartphones! Get the hell up, pay attention to what is going on around you and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!" Love this Janelle, so much :)

    I'm glad that Janelle is finally getting some of the recognition she deserves and of course people can come to enjoy an artist and their work later into their career but I'm *also* glad I wasn't the only one side-eyeing Ari the whole time. The interview was hard to watch, it's clear Ari's not familiar with Janelle's catalogue or what she stands for beyond a surface-level.
    Some parts were really touching and powerful but the rest of the time she was doing her best to answer pretty uninteresting questions like 'why did you look into the camera'. And then there were times when she would have something really meaningful to say and Ari left her hanging with 'that's soo true' or 'yo did anyone tweet that just now?' instead of engaging her further. I really do love Ari's videos but she wasn't the right choice for this event. It would've been more watchable if we had someone who actually knows Janelle's work as an artist, and not just the bits and pieces that come across outside of her music. All that said, I get the importance of having two black queer women on that stage to talk about an album that speaks to us 'dirty computers' out here. I just wish there were more black queer CZcamsrs (or creatives in general) with more name recognition.

    Has the interviewer even heard of Octavia Butler? She was writing SF under her own name when most women chose to write under a pseudonym or using initials and a last name. And she was proudly writing about black women in SF when no one else was.

    I almost didn't watch the video because I sometimes have a bad habit of reading comments first. Fortunately, I also still believe in learning things for myself. One question for those of you concerned about Ari being the interviewer because "Ari isn't even a fan of her music"...do you truly believe that everyone who interviews an artist is a fan of their work??? Let's be real.
    This may have been a chance for Ari and others to shift their perspectives on Janelle Monáe, the individual as well as her as an artist. Nerves may have been a challenge but some of the questions dug deeper than many that Janelle usually gets, solely because they were asked by someone who experiences her and life in a different way than the typical interviewer does. I did fast forward at times but I appreciate the thought Janelle put into her responses, that's what I was here for in the first place.

    • @JTrudy808
      @JTrudy808 Před 6 lety

      Maybe not a fan, but at least someone that's knowledgeable about her music. Ari couldn't even check off that box. A conversation about the development of Janelle's music that led to DC is what we wanted from this interview, and that could've been better delivered if the interviewer had at least listened to Janelle's work before DC.

    Ari... please don’t lie. I love your work and your channel, but let’s not pretend like you weren’t a fan of Janelle’s even AFTER you reacted to Make Me Feel. You could’ve done this interview without fake-stanning. 🙄 Also, I’m glad Janelle crushed your question about her music finally serving “Janelle Monáe.” An actual fan wouldn’t have asked that.

    • @SourStrawberrys
      @SourStrawberrys Před 6 lety +3

      JTrudy808 As I said before. Being a fan of HER and being a fan of her music genre/style is two completely different things. This woman does multiple things. She is an actress, activist, fashion trend setter, who also premiered her own sci fi short film. All of these things are things one can be a fan of. Ari NEVER lied and said she was a fan of her style/genre of music. So do not insult her and call her a "liar" based on things that were never said an your own misinterpretation.

    • @SourStrawberrys
      @SourStrawberrys Před 6 lety +1

      JTrudy808 Also, Janelle's response to that question made no sense. In every interview she has said this album was different from all the rest because it was about her, janelle monae, and not cindi Mayweather one the characters she plays. Which is why it was so hard for her to write about it because the topic was about personal stuff pertaining to her. And then her ass says the other albums was janelle monae. She is contradicts herself. "And actual fan would not have asked her that." Bullshit, I've seen like 5 other interviews where the interviewer brought up the same question and janelle agreeing that this album was more about janelle monae's story and not cindi Mayweathers story. So I did not understand why her answer was different this time.

    • @JTrudy808
      @JTrudy808 Před 6 lety +12

      SourStrawberrys I’ve seen those same interviews, and yes, she did say that this album isn’t being projected from her android alter-ego. But the way the question was asked in this setting assumed something about Janelle’s old music that simply wasn’t true. Yes, Dirty Computer is more revealing of Janelle the woman. That doesn’t mean that Janelle wasn’t present in all of her previous work, speaking through the perspective of the Android/futuristic other. I’ve been a die hard Janelle Monae fan since 2010, and love all of her work from Lettin’ Go and beyond. Listening to all of her albums numerous times and personally connecting with the music helps you understand that even though in this new album she’s stepping away from the Cindi story, she was never NOT being Janelle. Her message has always been the same: uplifting the often times marginalized, standing up for the ‘other’. As I was saying, an ACTUAL FAN wouldn’t have asked that question, but would’ve allowed Janelle to explain the difference in perspective of DC versus her previous albums herself, as she did in all of her other interviews.

    • @JTrudy808
      @JTrudy808 Před 6 lety +4

      SourStrawberrys and to the Ari thing, she DEFINITELY switched up from “uh, I don’t really like her music, but I like what she represents/her fashion” to “I’m a HUGE, INCREDIBLE Janelle Monae fan” (1:45). I’m not sure what the definition of “fan” is today, but liking a person’s image and what they represent versus resonating with and supporting EVERYTHING an artist has to offer are two entirely different things, and I believe a fan is most definitely the latter. Without Janelle Monae, I’m not sure I would’ve even survived high school with any self-confidence. So for someone who has really been rocking with Janelle for nearly a decade and has depended so heavily on her MUSIC, not just her image, it stings to see someone who didn’t really connect with her up on stage interviewing her and seemingly doing a 180 in terms of tone. I get it, you like Ari, but I do as well, and there’s no need to try to invalidate how I feel about the situation simply because you disagree. We’re all “free ass motherfuckers” right?

    • @SourStrawberrys
      @SourStrawberrys Před 6 lety

      JTrudy808 The previous album still wasn't about HER specifically. You are reading it as ari was saying that the first albums wasn't her idea or something and someone gave her the image. That was not what I got from it. So I think both you and janelle read it wrong. I read it as she was just suggesting the other albums was not directly about janelle and her life it was part of a story she created and this album is more directly related to her and janelle story. Not that the previous album had no aspect of her at all. We understand than the previous albums where her concept and her own story telling.

    The most thing I truely admire about here is, that she is able to show herself as a humble and vulnerable person on stage - the same time she expresses her inner creative world by her style, confidence and clarity. Everytime I hear her saying something, it’s well thought and spoken. Had the luck to see her on stage several years ago and she already then had such a presence and power, it was remarkable. She is a giver - already.

      Great job! You asked some really specific questions lol, I think she handled them well tho. You both had a really great energy.... and congratz on getting emotional, but pulling it back on track... recovering well is a good skill.

      Why did you have to be fake and pretend you were a big fan when you've openly said you don't like her music or her sound? It's okay to be honest and say that your opinion has changed if that's the case, instead of just acting like a long-time fan when you aren't.

    Janelle used to wear a uniform same black and white same hairstyle. I remember her saying it was because her parents wore a uniform when they went to work. But she got a lot of hate for that. I would ask how it feels now that she is expressing so much more through her style and if she didnt have so much pressure on changing would she have? I'm a fan of Ari, but this interview was hard to watch. I couldn't finish. These questions were not compelling.
