Regarding the Bosch starter motor on 105 cars. Three bolts and nuts attach the starter motor to the bell housing, it is absolutely imperative that the centre nut and bolt is the special correct one, because it centralizes the starter in the correct position,to ,prevent uneven engagement with the ring gear.
This car has the older type that only has two bolts on the starter, with the early type bell housing, the later type of starter is a lot better with the locating bolt, but this bell housing is matched to the engine and I don't want to change it.

Those starters can bee a pain. I had problems with the 2000 spider i am working on and had it out about 5 times

Jakov Vrbanec haha. Yeah. But these doors work perfectly up to 125cm and then jam. Needs fixing.

I was able to replace my 68 105 1300 GT Jr RHD from below. Complete PITA but did it without removing the carbs.
With so many classics, great looking facility.... and a Lift.... you need a better socket set. LOL
well that escalated quickly after this episode...
Rigid carb mounts are not good for two reasons , the excellent heat dissipation from an aluminum head is why alfa used rubber mounts to isolate them as much as possible,its not to save money ,also the close proximity of the float bowels to the carb body cause vibration to wear a pin hole in the float . My 1300 junior ran rich if i held it at 4500 rpm ( hill climbs) cured it going back to rubber. Mebe harmonic frequencies bouncing the float \ needle .anyway if you cant be bothered to maintain what is realy a four wheel ducati you should by a ford . I’ve never driven a 116 car, but I’d really like to. I do have a real love for 105s, I think they’re such amazing all rounders.
I totally agree with you on the rigid mounts now, I did a video a couple months back explaining why I’ve changed my mind about them.
The problem is finding good rubber. My brand new rubber mounts delaminated in less than a month. Rigid for me. Also, running dellortos’.
Good stuff Jethro, really love your video productions and clear Alfa explanations . Makes me want to switch out my '71 in (need of a rebuilding) US Spica system, to a more manageable (for the average shade tree mechanic to work on, as your hands clearly prove Weber carb system.) But everyone here seems to poo poo webers in the states. Spica said to be more efficient , better performing reliable for the streets? Your thoughts?
Jansen Photo Expeditions I've never driven a Spica car as they weren't brought into South Africa and there weren't many around Europe. It may be better but I like a good set of Webers. I like being able to tinker and tune and modify the fuel system.
Hi Jethro, great video as always! I was wondering if you know if those Momo wheels are original? I have the same ones on my GTV and I never saw them on other 105.
I think they were a period wheel offered by Momo in the 70s/80s. I don't think they were an option wheel like the Champagnolos or the Momo Vegas of the time. But they are one of the best looking wheels for a GTV.

Jethro, have a Giulia 1600 myself with webers. Noticing a very different sound to your motor (also a 1600 no?). Could be my speakers, but what have you done with the exhaust? I have the euro airbox and mine sounds much more restricted than yours. Your Sprint almost sounded as though you had trumpets, which you obviously do not. Did you just not hook the airbox back up?
barleywhiner the exhaust on this car was in pretty bad shape at this point, so that adds to the sound, but when I was revving it I had the top of the air box off, which sounds greatz
I nearly broke my back stripping and re-installing the carbs on my Guilia Super 1600 getting access to the starter.....and i was 21 at the time....did it several times

Should bring the ignition and fuel system to the 21st century if you want to daily it without annoying other road users. You are in UK, get the ITB with fuel injectors and Haltech Elite to handle the COP, and other basic sensors to help protect the internals.
Princess Solace I actually live in the middle of the countryside is South Africa. So there aren’t that many rod users to annoy. Also, I don’t know anything about running EFI so it would be a massive change, and there aren’t any local auto shops who could do it either.

The ethanol in modern gas is horrible on soldered brass floats. Eats through the solder and causes a nightmare in leaks

This giulia is named "scalino" here in Italy,i saw one in very good conditions sold for 45000 euros,take care of her.

Hi, what ignition coil would you recommend for my 1750, it has 123 distributor! Cheers from Australia
@@ferneycaro-co3hz any 12 volt non-ballasted coil with a primer resistance over 1ohm will work. I use the Bosch Blue Coil or the Bosch Super Blue Coil.

You might want to check to see if your pcv valve is stuck shut (if equipped) for that crankcase pressure issue... a few shots of carb cleaner usually does the trick.
You'll gain credibility if cruddy dark jeans are worn rather than white jeans. There's a good reason we wear blacks and blues.
Hanlon Greg This car doesn't have a PCV valve. This is the early block with the breather on the back, shortly after this Alfa moved the breather to the cam-cover because this design spits oil too easily. I'm going to do a compression test and see if I really have broken compression ring.
Yeah chinos are not really garage safe clothing...
Look forward to seeing what you find. Might be good idea to do a dry compression test and then a wet test. If comp is higher on second, you know it's a ring issue. Good luck.
Hi Jethro, I don't feel the need to take the carbs out when I need to disassemble the starter motor of my 2000 engine. Is the 1600 breather pipe that intrusive?

João Vale Did you take it out from the underside? I could barely lift it out even with the carbs off. I was planning to pull the carbs apart completely but when I found that it was just a bad float I didn't go any further.
Hi. I have a duetto with the same air-intake as yours. I do not have to remove the carbs to get to the starter motor. You can reach for it under the carbs and pull the starter motor out via the gap next to the distributor. I have done this twice before (though i confess that at moment i cannot remember if you have to remove the air-intake support to make way for the starter).
Good points about the solid mounts. I am thankful that the original carbs floats in mine are still good and i was thinking of switching to solid mounts and maybe you are right that the excessive vibration coming through the solid mounts might have fatigued the float. i am now reconsidering.
Usually I unbolt it from top and the lower bolt from underneath. Then I slide the starter motor forward between the block and the carburetor support bracket. After it is fully disengaged from the bellhousing I just pull it up (gear nose facing up) between the carbs and the firewall. It's tight but not that difficult...

This person is priledged owning an Alfa of any description. Sell it or give it to someone who'll LOVT and USE it. He sounds like it's a millstone rather than a LOVELY CAR to have.
That wood table look really nice and is a waste to use it for this type of works...
Do You use nuts with 12 mm AF? In case You use 13 mm AF, You have a very hard life.
