Had a repairman come out and fix a different problem with my AC. We live in Vegas where the AC is a
MUST in the summer. He told me the same thing...with a wink. Like never pay someone to come clean it, just hose it off, be sure to pull the fuse out first. Work from top to bottom. Nice to know I had an honest repairman.

Your method is certainly better than not doing it at all, but like everyone else, I use a different method. 1.) Turn off the unit at the thermostat. 2.) Flip the breaker off for the A/C unit at the fuse box. 3.) Take off the top of the A/C unit. 4.) Spray Coil Cleaner all over the inside of the A/C's coils. 5.) Wait five to ten minutes. 6.) Spray the Coil Cleaner off using a garden hose, spraying from the inside of the A/C unit to the outside. 7.) Keep spraying the coils until the water comes out clear. 8.) Go have a beer and think about how much money you saved by doing A/C maintenance yourself.

Suggestion, close the electrical box after pulling the fuses. Especially since you are working around it with a hose. There's still a couple hot terminals in there. Best to close it and stay safe.

No doubt Dave! Mainly due to the fact this is a tutorial. I’m inexperienced hence my research, but immediately knew that was a no-no. Shut power off at the main box 1st. Then follow this procedure outside, set aside the fuse and close the box. The reverse procedure after the job is complete.
I followed these directions and my AC is now working great! Thanks a ton for the help and saving me a ton of money!
Best way is start cleaning from inside to outside of the condonser coil, and and beter to close the electric panel after you pull out the fuse.

Thank you for speaking slowly and clearly as this is a foreign language to me...maintaing the ac is a first for me. Hubby is an engineer but travels and exhausted so I need to give this a try. AC is only 4 years old and went down overnight. I have trimmed bushes and weeds than impede air flow..next is hose on condense. I have never touched fuse box before..a bit nervous. But it is hot in OHIO and I'm unemployeed so I need to try to do this. Again, Thanks for your helpful, clear, directions and for taking care of your home! I learned to mow our one acre this weekend. I did not know this was required maintenance and as a recent widow, I am trying to figure out all I need to do for the house, cars and yard. My concern is that I won't get those fuses in correctly. Thanks for this. I will say this, I haven't even used my AC yet this year and I am in Texas with temps in the lo 90s today and I can thank my radiant barrier for that.

Prime example of a half informed homeowner. He's actually compounding his problem by driving the rest of the dirt you don't see deeper into the coil. In order for the coil to collect that kind of debris on the surface , the interior of the coil has to be plugged. True by cleaning the coils annually will not only increase operational efficiency but will also help keep the units running longer and lessen the frequency of repair.....however....the tops should be pulled and the coils back flushed from inside out using a mild detergent. You don't wash your car without soap...why would you was these without? Thanks for the attempt and thank you for making more work for the skilled trades. We appreciate people like you.

That cottonwood can really cover the coil. Good to remove it. Also good to use coil cleaner spray to loosen dirt in the fins.

Does this work for a recent lawn mowing?
Im renting a room in this house and the agents thought it be okay to let the month of August go by without mowing the grass, and when they finally did mow the grads, they gave us a surprise bonus and left the AC dirty and the house warm as hell.
This will definitely help but most condensers have a two and sometimes three pass coil that requires “splitting the coil” also a pressure washer will make all the difference properly used so you don’t fold the fins.

Is there any reason you wouldn't use a vacuum, being careful to not bend the fins? Using a fine tooth comb to gently get most of the visible stuff out first?
I have to clean mine off almost every year due to all the grass clippings being sucked in. I need to make some kind of screen to put on the outside to catch it then I can just shake the grass clippings off of the screen.
How do I get my wife to mow the yard?

Can you use Vinegar to clean it as well? I sprayed it all down (without using vinegar) and it looks good. Got rid of the yellow pollen, easy.
You can...I'd go with a 50 50 mixture vinegar and water.
Need to foam around that hole in the siding where the gas pipe enters the house...
A lot of those Carrier's have double row coils and have to be split to clean them properly
I have a American standard and it has a lot of screws to remove the panel and the top. I can’t do it myself can I spray from the outside like this? I noticed there’s a bunch of leaves inside mine is ok if the leaves get wet? Can I still do it this way because these American standards are too hard to take off.
I really wish mine would be that easy cleanup with a hose. I don’t know what it is, but the dirt here in vegas is sticky as sh!t 😅😅😅 great vid, thanks!
RELOADINGandSHOOTING you can buy cheap coil cleaner that is no acid etc etc at your hvac or lowes for about 20 bucks it will in dry heat stick red clay areas
FYI...
You can put the fuses back in upside down to keep it disconnected.
Why not take the top pan off and clean from the inside out? It seems like you'd just be spraying all that gunk inside the unit. So after several times of cleaning it this way you're going to have to clean the inside, which will be 10x harder than if you just cleaned from the inside in the first place.

It could be like my units and have the motor attached to the top pan. Tried to take it out but electrical wires are too short to raise it.
But I flush somewhat from the inside out and similar to what he did.
The thing is I never allowed my units to look that bad because I've always waited before removing covers until most of the seeds and stuff from trees stopped flying in Spring then flush and I flush again and cover it before the leaves fall.
Also have a long length brush.
But I've always had a very light coating of that cotton stuff and that's it.
And I kept my area spotless. Not grass or anything growing near it.
Still puts out cold with no change and no issues in past 10 years since new.
You should always clean opposite direction of airflow. So he should have gone inside to out. Doing it the way he did will eventually impact it and make it worse.
That's a good idea. It looked like he wasn't using a lot of pressure though so he's probably alright. You could see all the stuff running downward rather than inward.
Mine needed cleaning bad, it would just run and run and not get anywhere with it

it is a better practice to flush it from the inside out. You have to disconnect a few things and take the lid off. You are basically pushing all the grime into the fins by doing it this way.
I had no idea people have to pull their A/C fuses when rinsing down the condenser. Do we also have to pull the fuse when it starts raining?

Hello from Florida! Great video. Every year at this time my A/C does this thing where it only works at night. During the day it runs and runs but the house is hot. At night, it's nice and cool. Any ideas?

Yeah your unit needs servicing immediately. It's not that it's working at night...but because the ambient air is cooler at night anyway. I bet you've got dirty condenser and evaporator coils. You may even be low on refrigerant also. You need a FULL servicing. You need to change your filters more often and more coil cleanings as well. Your unit is highly inefficient and wasting you loads of money.
same thing my home . put in new duct work and a little bigger unit - . 5 ton bigger and new air handler 8.000 later works perfect . needs to be serviced 2 times a year.. Carrier unit , its perfect dan sarasota . old unit 9 years old.

Yes this is common. Your coils are dirty. Do what this guy is doing and try and get your hands on some foaming coil cleaner. Lots of debris gets stuck between the fins where you can’t see

Thank you! Rinsing the coils is the best way to keep your efficiency up there. Removing what's been pushed out is important (and should be done once in a while) but it requires removing the top cover (lid with the fan attached). If you're up to the task, it's just a few sheet metal screws to remove (8-12) and you'll probably need a helper to lift if off evenly. But take a second and think about how the machine works. The fan blows air up, sucking air through the cooling coils. After you clean the coils and the debris inside dries, there's a fair chance that it will be exhausted by the top fan. But if you want to be thorough, rinse the sides, then remove the top and vacuum/rinse out...I usually don't do this and my first central AC units lasted 28 years.

I did this today and alot of dirt and debris came of. I sprayed the outside but I have some stuff to clean out on the inside.
I use a 44,000 PSI pressure washer. Cleans those stupid fins right off. Now I have a great heater! Don't know why it was cooling things down.

Living in Florida, I always have chameleons jumping into the fan and killing themselves. The top of the condenser has a metal grate over it with openings large enough for a 4 inch chameleon to get into with no problem. I see your condensers have a smaller grate system which would keep this from happening. Carrier should be using these instead of what they sell in Florida which is essentially a lizard trap that has to be cleaned out when Carrier does their periodic maintenance every so often.

How is unit on left clean, and unit on right caked up. You are supposed to clean from the inside out. You are pushing some dirt back down into the find by cleaning from outside. You have to take off top fan motor to access inside to do job properly.

You cant just take the top off of those specific units and some others... you have to get in through the side panel which if he takes it off exposes the coil very clearly but a lot of people are scared to open them up.
buy a gallon of aluminum brightened spray on coils then let it foam up then rinse.

Unfortunately mine is a rooftop unit so it will be a bit more of a hassle. I'm mainly concerned about where the water goes when you've sprayed so much into it. Don't want it going into the attic.

I'm learning basic HVAC maintenance for some rental properties & home. My many experiences w/ HVAC techs over 15-plus years leads me to believe that they are mostly dishonest. Try to get an HVAC tech to service a residential unit and hose down the condenser seems to be an affront to their egos. I'm doing it myself in a couple of days to avoid the cheating $ and also their recommendations that I always need a new system. Ughh.
yeah my AC company wants to charge me $250 to clean my coils after giving me a $100 discount. I had no clue that I can do this myself without taking the unit apart.

The thermostat is just sending a measly 24 volts to the controls. Meanwhile removing the disconnect switch will prevent the approx. 220 volts that powers the unit from discharging while your spraying water.

Precaution
Always clean from the inside out. You will end up making the coil much worse. Then techs like me have to clean it the right way and you get mad because of how much the company we work for charges.

Working on my truck yesterday and I heard the brand new Goodman outside unit kick on and then a loud BING BANG BING BANG BING noise. I thought it threw a rod or the transmission fell out or worse. It was pieces of a bird all chewed up like it fell into a meat grinder! How the heck-o-pete did a bird get past the louvres on top? Yuck. Now I’m looking at videos on how to clean guts off my AC. Poor little woodland creatures don’t stand a chance
Make sure you check/verify that your outdoor unit does not have split coils. If they do... watch some other videos that instruct you on how to clean them... just running the water hose over the coils as this gentleman did is not a complete instruction/job. He may not be knowledgeable as of him creating this video add to that there are multiple techniques/methods as well as nuances and variables in any and every maintenance procedure. Generally speaking what he is doing does serve a purpose but is lacking as one needs to check the Hi and Low pressures while check for a 20 degree delta T across the coils as well as sub-cooling and super-heat. You may have other issues with the unit that you cannot detect. And yes there are Techs that appear to be scamming customers out there but there are a lot of great Techs that do a great job and are very honest in their dealings with you. They focus on quality work and craftsmanship and customer education while ensuring a proper design and a system that matches the load of the structure. Last note: EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR UNIT AND HOW THESE MACHINES OPERATE THIS WILL SAVE YOU MONEY AS YOU WILL KNOW WHEN A TECH IS NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT A SYSTEM OR PROCEDURE TO TEST AND DIAGNOSE PROPERLY OR COMPLETELY.
